Be it known that I, GEORGE WILSON Goss, a citizen of the United States, residing at Orlo, in the county of Reeves and State of Texas, have invented a new and useful Calculator, of which the following is a specificat-ion.
This invention has reference to improvements in calculators and 18 designed to provide a simple and easily manipulated device -for the ready calculation of problems'ot The invention will be best understood' from a consideration of the following detail description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which drawings,

Fig. 4 is a detail view showing a manner of differentiating various numbers to be calculated.
Referring to the drawings there is shown a cabinet or case 1 which may be of any suitable material and of any suitable shape, the showing of the drawings being more or less typical or schematic. The front 2 of the cabinet is formed with a vertical series of longitudinal slots or passages 3 extending for the greater portion of the length of the cabinet.
The passages 3 are terminated at one end at the point more remote from the end of the front portion 2 of the cabinet than at the other end andin the space thus left there is a vertical series of short openings 4 each in line with a respective opening or passsage 3.

lVithin the cabinet are groups of rollers 5, 6, 7, suitably journaled in the ends of the casing and these rollers are coupled together by gear wheels 8 for conjoint motion. The rollers 5 and 7 receive respective ends of a band 9 which is conducted around the roller (5 and this roller (3 is so located that a portion of the band passing therearouml is presented close to a respective passage 3 and opening 4, the band being of sufiicicntwidth to embrace the distance between one end of and the opposite end of the corresponding opening 4. The journal or" each roller 6 is carried through one end of the casing 1 and there receives a manipulating handle 10. so that by turning the bandle the several drums carrying a band 9 are caused to rotate in the proper direction to unwind the band from one roller, say the roller 7 and wind it upon the other roller say the roller 5, or by reversing the direc tion of rotation of the handle 10 the band may be moved in the otheradirection. Upon the bands are displayed numbers representing nedetermined values.
Mounted on the top of the casing at the opposite ends thereof. are vertical spindles 11 each carrying a roller 12 and each spindle also carries a crank 13 by means of which the spindle as well as the roller 12 may be rotated. Fast to'the drums or rollers 12 are the respective ends of a narrow band It movable by the proper manipulation of the rollers on the top of the casing from end to end of the latter. In front of and closely adjacent to the band 14: is a guide rod 15 fastnt the ends to the casing and spaced :1 short distance from the top thereof. This rod may be of any suitable shape, suchdor instance, (ISShOTVD in Fig. 3 where it appears that the rod is slightly flattened on one side, but is otherwise circular in cross section. Applied to this rod is a sleeve 16 having its interior conforming in shape to the cross sectional shape of the rod and this sleeve is capable of being moved along the rod but is prevented from turning thereon because of the bent portion of the rod. From one side of the sleeve 16 there projects a pointer 17 and from the opposite side of the sleeve there projects a bar 18 extending downward along the front 2 of the casing 1 closely adjacent to the saidfront and traversing the openings or passages 3 therethrough. At one end fall w ings 3 numbers of days in regular order and opposite the opening 4 in line with the topmost opening 3 per cent. designations will be displayed. The next band 9 in: order Will display large money designations, say thousands, the next lower band Will display hundreds, and the still lower band will display units of hundreds, and if desired turther bands may be provided with smaller designations. The same bands will display through the passages 3 other predetermined numbers corresponding to the numbers displayed through the openings 4.
By Way of example let it be assumed that it is desired to ascertain the interest on $1,101.00 at 10 per cent. for titty-five days. Then the uppermost band is moved to display the ten per cent. designation through the corresponding opening 4: and day designations Will appear through the corresponding passage 3. to display the number 1,000 through the cor responding opening t, the third band is moved to display the number 100 through the corresponding opening in passage at and the next band is moved to display the number 1 through the corresponding opening l. Under the conditions assumed all the rollers are moved to an extentthat the designations displayed through the passages will come sp'ond to ten per cent. on the sums displayed through the passages '41. ()n now moving the slide 16 to a point corresponding to the number of days for which it. is desirable to find the interest, it only then necessary to add the various sums found in line with the slides on the various bands 9 displayed through the passages 3. This sum will give the interestten per cent. on $1,1 1.00 for titty live days. l letitbe assumed that a. similar problem should be proposed except that it be desirable to ascertain the interest for a. period of time between two dates, then the band 1-iis employed, the first of the dates being brought into coincidence with the pointer 19 and the pointer 17 is brought opposite the second of the two dates. A calculator comprising a suitable oas- 1 ing having a series of alined and respectively long and short passages for the display of circumscribed portions of the contents of the casing, bands within the casing each movable into visible relation to respective alined passages, a band on top the casadjustable in the direction of itslength, a rod alongthe top of the casing adjacent to the band thereon, a fixed pointer on the casing inoperative relation to the band, and a sleeve on and movable along the rod and provided with a pointer on one side in operative relation to the band onthe casing and rod on the opposite side movable over all the passages in the casing simultaneously, the sleeve and rod being relatively shaped to prevent turning of the sleeve on the rod. i

A calculator comprising a suitable casing having passages therethrough for the display of circumscribed portions of the contents of the casing, bands within the casing movable into visible relation to the passages therethrough and each provided with distinctive Zones with series of numbers thereon ditlerentiated by the distinctive zones, all the zones on each band being movable into visible relation to a respective passage through the casing, and an indicator member movable lengthwise of all the passages simultaneously.
