Description

' M. J. DAHILL, JR- DETAOHABLE GOLLAR AND DUFF PASTEN'ER.
APPLICATION FILED PBB.20,1909.
Patented Sept. 13,1910.
MAURICE J. DAHILL, JR., OF SOUTH EASTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
DETACHABLE COLLAR AND CUFF FASTENER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed February 20, 1909.
Patented Sept. 13, 1910. Serial No. 479,169.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MAURICE J. -DAI-IILL, Jr., a citizen of the United States, residing at South Easton, in the county of Bristol, and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Detachable Collar and Cuff Fastener, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in fastening devices of that class having a head, a shank and a base and which are capable of being employed as collar or cuff buttons, and the object of the invention is to provide in a device of this class a member or a plurality of members pivoted on the base and head and provided with a laterally extending arm or arms arranged adjacent to an elongated head and to provide means to lock the member or members in position so that the arm or arms shall project laterally from the elongated head to prevent the same being withdrawn from a buttonhole and which may be moved to and locked in another position to permit such withdrawal.
Referring to the drawings: Figure l is a plan of a fastening device embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken on line 2-2 of F ig. 1. Fig. 3 is a bottom plan section taken on line of Fig. 2. Fig. 4; is a detail elevation of the rotatable member. Fig; 5 is a central sectional view of another fastening device embodying my invention.
- Fig. 6 is a bottom plan section taken on line (3-6 of Fig. 5.
Like numerals refer to like parts throughout the several views of the drawings.
I11 the drawings, referring to Figs. 1 to 4:, inclusive, 10 is a base having formed on or secured thereto in any suitable manner a standard or shank 11 having a head 12 and a relatively narrower neck 13 and having two legs I l, 14. The head 12 is offset thus forming two lateral recesses 15, 15, as shown in Fig. 1, these recesses being provided to receive two arms 16, 16, respectively, of a rotatable member 17, shown in Fig. 41, said member being pivoted to the head 12 and the arms 16 being offset from each other so as to form continuations of the offset parallel sides of the head 12 when said arms are located in the recesses 15, respectively. Preferably the member 17 is pivoted to the head 12 by providing said member with a cylindrical projeetion 19 journaled in a bearing 20 in said head and said member is provided with a shank 21 extending through a hole 22 pro vided in the base 10 and having formed thereon or secured thereto a laterally extending arm 23. The shank 21 may, if desired, be provided with an annular flange 2-1 resting upon the base 1.0. The arm 23 is preferably resilient and is engageable with means provided on the base 10 to lock the same in either of two positions, such locking means in this instance consisting of an annular rib 25 having depressions 26 and 27 therein to receive the arm. 23 so that when the arm 25 is located in the depression 26 the member 17 is locked in the position shown in full lines in Figs. 1 and 2 and when said arm is located in the depression 27, said member occupies the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1. To move the member 17 from one of these positions to the other, the same is grasped with the thumb and forefinger and rotated, it being understood that the arm 23 will yield and ride up on the rib 25 and snap into the recess 26 or 27, as the case may be. Vhen the member 17 is located in the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. l, the head may be readily introduced into a buttonhole, after which said member is moved into the position shown in full lines in Fig. 1, thus preventing the head from being withdrawn through the button hole. The base 10 is preferably provided with a cap 28 flanged over the perimeter thereof, said cap being provided to cover the arm. 23 and to form a smooth surface which, in some instances, will rest against the body of the user where the device is employed as a collar or cuff button.
Referring now'to Figs. 5 and 6, wherein a second fastening device embodying my invention is illustrated, 29 is a base having formed on or secured thereto in any suitable manner a standard or shank 30 similar to the standard 11. In this instance, however, instead of employing a single rotatable member, I provide two rotatable members 31, 31 each having an arm 32 pivoted to the head 33 of the standard 30 and having a shank 34 extending through and pivoted in a hole 35 provided in the base 2%. Each of the shanks 34 is provided with a laterally extending arm 36 similar to the arm 23 of the form hereinbe't'ore described, and the base 29 is provided with an annular rib 37 having depressions 38, 3t), 40 and 41 therein to receive the arms 3-36, the segmental portions of the annular rib constituting stops to lock the members 31. in either of two positions,
viz., in the position to permit the head to be introduced through the buttonhole and in position to prevent said head from being withdrawn through the buttonhole. As is the case with the form shown in Figs. 1 to 4, inclusive, the head 33 is ofiset, as shown in Fig. (3, thus forming recesses 42, 42 to receive the arms 32, 32, respectively, so that when said arms are located in said recesses their faces coincidewith the opposite faces of the head 33. In this form of my invention, as well as in the first form, the base 29 is provided with a cap 4-?) serving the same purpose as the cap 28 of the first form.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire by Letters Patent to secure is:
l. A fastening device having, in combination, a base, a shank projecting therefrom and having a head and a relatively narrower 'neck located between said head and said base, and a member pivoted to said head and said base, said member having a laterally extending arm located adjacent to said head, and said head being laterally recessed to receive said arm, said member having a second laterally extending arm located adj acent to said base, and said base having means to engage said second arm to lock said member against rotative movement relatively to said base and said head.
2. A fastening device having, in combination, a base, a standard projecting therefrom and having a head and a relatively narrower neck and being offset to form two lateral recesses on opposite sides thereof, and two members pivoted to said head and said base, each of said members having a laterally extending arm adapted to enter one of said recesses and having engaging means located adjacent to said base and cooperating therewith to lock said member against rotative movement relatively to said base and head.
3. A fastening device having, in combination, a base, a standard projecting therefrom having a head, a relatively narrower neck and two legs, and a member having a laterally extending arm located adjacent to said head and a shank located between said legs and pivoted to said base, said base and said shank having cooperative engaging means to lock said member against rotative movement relatively to said base and said head.
