WATGHGASE.
APPLICATION FILED 11113.10, 1909.

INVENTOR Emil f/lffi/zauer WITNESSES ATTORNE Y8 1w: NORRIS PETERS co., WASHINGTON, arc.
EMILE J'. VTI'ITNAUER, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
WATGI-IOASE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 6, 1910.
Application filed March 10, 1909. Serial No. 482,587.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EMILE J. IVITTNAUER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved \Vatchcase, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved watch case, more especially designed for accommodating exceedingly thin movements, and arranged with an inner cap or a. cover to render the case dustproof without increasing the thickness of the case. For the purpose mentioned the case center of the watch case is provided with a groove or a recess, into which fits snugly the edge of the cap, cover or bezel.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a rear face view of the watch case, showing the back cover and inner cap open; Fig. 2 is an edge view of the same; Fig. is an enlarged cross section of the watch case, showing the back cover and inner cap closed; and Fig. 4 is an enlarged cross section of the improvement.
The case center A of the watch case is provided with the usual stem B and the bezel C carrying the crystal D. On the back lower portion of the case center A are arranged the hinges E and E for the back cover F and the inner cap or cover G to swing on, and the rear face of the case center A is provided with concentric ridges H and I forming a groove J between them, the groove having a beveled bottom, as plainly indicated in Figs. 3 and 4. The back cover F is provided near its edge with a shoulder F adapted to snap onto the ridge H so as to securely hold the back cover F in a closed posit-ion. The inner cap or cover G is provided with a beveled edge G fitting the groove J, the inner end of the bevel G terminating in a shoulder G adapted to snap onto the inner ridge I so as to securely hold the inner cover or cap G in a closed position. By reference to Figs. 3 and 4, it will be noticed that the engaging shoulders F and G of the cover F and cap G extend approximately in the same plane when in a closed position, as the groove J is formed by undercutting the ridge H and thus it is possible to locate the ridge I approximately in the same plane with the ridge H and to form space for the entry of the edge of the cap G. By the arrangement described the ridges H and I are not arranged in step form as the ridges in watch cases now commonly made. Now by the arrangement described the inner cover or cap G can be made comparatively flat so as to take up very little room and allow making the watch case as thin as possible and at the same time the watch case is rendered dustproof owing to the snug fitting of the outer cover F and the inner cover or cap G on the back of the case center A, as above described and shown in Figs. 3 and 4.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. A watch case, comprising a case center having concentric outer and inner ridges arranged approximately in the same plane and forming a groove between them, a back cover hinged on the said case center and having a shoulder adapted to snap over the said outer ridge, and a cap hinged on the said case center and having its edge fitting the said groove, the cap having a shoulder adapted to snap over the said inner ridge.
'2. A watch case, comprising a case center having concentric outer and inner ridges arranged in approximately the same plane and forming a groove between them, a back cover hinged on the said case center and having a shoulder adapted to snap over the said outer ridge, and a cap hinged on the said case center and having its edge fitting the said groove, the cap having a shoulder adapted to snap over the said inner ridge, the bottom of the said groove and the edge of the said cap being beveled to fit one the other.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
