others skilled in the art to which it apper-' tains to make and use the same.
This inventionhas special reference to signet locket-rings, and seeks to provide a construction which will permit the locket-ring to retain the usual appearance of a signetring, will permit the usual ornamentation of the band adjacent to the seal, will possess a high degree of strength, and will provide water-tight joints around the picture or other memento placed in the locket. v
To this end the invention consists in certain novelfeatures illustrated in the accompanying drawings and hereinafter first fully described, and t en particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a ring embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same.
Fig. 3 is a transverse section of the ring with the seal and box removed, and Fig. 4 is an enlarged longitudinal section of the particular portion of the ring containing my improvements.
The annular shank or band 1 is given the usual conformation of a Signet-ring; but the top or seal portion is made hollow, as shown at 2. The top of this seal portion presents an elliptical opening 3, having its entire ed e in a slngle plane and arranged transversely of the shank. On the inner face of the wall of the band at one side of the opening and just below the edge of the same 1s a minute recess 4, and directly opposite the said recess the band is provided w1th two small perforated lu s or cars 5. A box is constructed to fit snug y in' this elliptical opening 3 and comprises a base 6 and a straight bezel 7, depending from the inner face of the base, the bezel having a small projection or tooth 8 struck up on one side to engage the recess 4, while diametrically opposite said tooth or projection a small perforated'lug or ear 9 is of the base, which ear fits closely between t e perforated lugs 5 on the annular shank. A pivot-pin 10 is inserted through the registering openings in these lugs, and thereby joins the by a hinged connection, the ends of the in being beveled and finished off close to t e surface of the band, so. as to merge into the ornamentation 11 thereon. A plcture or .other memento 12 is placed against the inner face .of the base 6 and within the bezel 7, and a glass 13, having a beveled edge, is placed over the picture, after which the edge of the bezel is burnished down over the beveled edge of the glass, so as to firmly secure the same and form a watertight joint therewith. A lid or seal 14 is soldered on the outer face of the base 6 and has its edge projecting beyond the edge of the base a distance equal to box to the band the thickness of the wall of the band orv annular shank, so that the seal or lid will cover the joint between the box and the band and its edge will merge into the surface of the band, whereby the finished .article will have the appearance of a solid ring. The outer face of the lid or seal may be engraved in the usual manner or may be ornamented with precious stones. Y
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it will be seen that I have provided a ,signetring containing a locket 1n which may be placed a picture or other memento. When the locket is closed, the ring will have the appearance of an ordinary Signet-ring, and t e usual ornamentation may be applied without being marred b the entrance of long joints thereinto, the on y outside 'oint being practically invisible and having t e appearance of a thin line drawn around the edge of the seal as a part of the scheme of orna-' mentation. By having the bezel of the same shape as the opening in the shank and fitting closely in the same the shank or band is not weakened, but is reinforced and braced or strengthened by the bezel and box. The metal will ossess suflicient natural resiliency to yie d as the box is closed into the ring and permit the projection 8 to ride into engagement with the recess 4, and the enga ement of the said recess and projection wi 1 hold the lid tightly against thering and prevent the access of water to the interior.
he box will thus be held firmly closed against accidental opening, but at the same time may be easily opened when a. slight pressure is properly applied to the edge of the lid over the lug 8.
Having thus described my invention, what an elliptical base having one edge hinged to one side of said opening, a bezel depending from the base and fitting snugly in said opening, the bezel being constructed to lockingly engage the wall of the opening opposite the hinge, a, beveled-edge glass Within the bezel,
the edge of the bezel being bent over and ing and merge into the surface of the shank.
In testimony whereof I have signed this 7 specification in the presence of two subscribmg Witnesses.
