IMPROVEMENT IN WEIGHINGF-SCALES.
Specilcation' forming part of Letters Patent N0. 96,955, dated November 16, 1869.
clare that the following is a full, clear, and
exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification.
In the usual construction of the beams of scales the fulcrum of the beam is a steel. edge, and the supports of the articles to be weighed and of the weights are steel edges.
My improvement consists in making the steel bearing-points the eccentric ends of steel screws, for the purpose of providing great facility of nice adjustment of points.
Figuresl and 2 are views ofthe beam and the parts referred to, the same letters applying in both figures.
A is the beam.
B is the standard.
E E are the dishes.
a a are the fulcrum-points.
b b are the supporting-points at end of beam. The fulcrum-points and the supporting-points are most readily provided by being at end of steel screws, and great nicety of adjustment of the distances between the fulcrum-points and supporting-points is provided by making the supporting-point at the end of the screw a little eccentric to the axis of screw.
Fig. 3 is a magnified section of screw, in
order to 'show eceentricity of point of screw.
c c are conical bearings, attached to the under side of the dishes E E.
d d are balance-weights, so attached to the dish that when the balance-weight hangs vertical the dish is horizontal.
e e are connecting-pieces, of shape shown in drawings, which are fastened to dish at m, and
into which the rod carrying the balance-weight The screws 7L 71., by which the balance-.weight I rod is attached to the pieces e e, are of such length that, when screwed up properly, the dishes, the bearing-points, and the balanceweights, while they have all necessary freedom, cannot be entirely separated.
IVhat I claim as invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The pan E, supported on the end ofthe balance-bea1n by means of a point formed on the end of a screw and slightly eccentric to the axis thereof, for the purpose of linear adjustnient.
2. The open loop-piece e, to the lower arm of which the balance-weight is connected by a screw, h, adjustable to form a stop to prevent the disengagement of said loop from the balance-arm, all substantially in the manner and for the purpose herein set forth.
VILLIAM P. PIERCE.
