UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
PERCY F. MAG'EE AND ARLIN E. MAGEE, OF JANESVILLE, WISCONSIN.
TOBACCO-BOX FASTENING.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed October 18, 1909.
Patented Sept. 6, 1910. Serial No. 523,314.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, PERCY F. lVIAGEE and ARLIN E. MAGEE, citizens of the United States, residing at J anesville, in the county of Rock and State of WVisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tobacco-Box F astenings, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to provide a detachable fastener particularly useful for connecting the top of a tobacco or other box to the main section of the box in a removable manner.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical section through the upper portion of main section of a box, and through the top thereof, showing our improved fastener in position. Fig. 2 is an elevation of the fastener. Fig. 3 is a cross-section of the fastener on dotted line a-a Fig. 2.
The main section, is of a tobacco box of an old construction, and has corner posts 2 projecting beyond its open end. These corner posts are each provided with an opening 3. The top 4 of the tobacco box has an edging 5 through which are formed openings 6 one for each corner post and when the top is placed over the corner post the openings 3 and 6 will coincide.
The main section of the box is filled with tobacco and the top 4: is placed on the corner posts in a manner well understood. In order to connect the top to the corner posts, a fastener is provided which will be driven into the openings 3 and 6. This fastener comprises a tube 7 closed at one end as at S, and open at its other end leaving the V shaped opening 9. The closed end of the tube is slightly smaller in diameter than the openings 3 and 6 in order that it may readily enter. Upon driving the fastener into the openings, the V shaped opening will nearly close, thereby exerting a pressure against the walls of the openings sufficient to prevent its accidental displacement.
hen the tobacco is to be inspected the box is turned up side down so that the top rests on the floor, the fasteners are then driven in through the openings which will allow the main section to be raised free of the tobacco supported in the top. The fasteners may be used over again in connecting the main section to the top.
We claim as our invention.
1. A fastener of the character set forth, comprising a tapered body, the smaller end of which is tubular and non-contractible, the larger end portion being capable of lat eral expansion and contraction.
2. A fastener of the character set forth, comprising a tapered body, the smaller end of which is a complete open ended cylinder, the larger end portion being capable of lateral expansion and contraction and having a longitudinal tapered opening in one SIC e.
In testimony whereof we have hereunto set our hands in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
