SKIRT-MARKER.

Be it known that I, ANDREW H. LANDER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Port Chester, county of Westchester, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Skirthlarkers, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

This invention relates more particularly to a device that may be used by tailors and dress makers for marking the proper length of a skirt.

The primary object of the invention is to provide a simple and efiicient device by which a dress or skirt may be readily marked at the proper distance from the bottom thereof while on the wearer, so that the length, whether one or more inches from the ground, may be uniform throughout the entire skirt, thus overcoming the objections incident to the usual means employed for this purpose and at the same time providing a device by which the marking may be quickly and easily accomplished.

Another object of the invention is to provide a device that may be used for either long or short skirts according to the wishes of the wearer.

A further object of the invention is to provide a simple and efiicient device which may be of sheet metal or other material and which may have its marking member eX- tensible.

With these and other objects in view, the invention will be hereinafter more particu larly described with reference to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification and will then be pointed out in the claims at the end of the description.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of one form of device embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the device. Fig. 3 is an end view; and Fig, 4 is a detail perspective of the marking member or element.

The device has a base 10 which may be of any desired form and which is adapted to be placed upon the floor, and secured or otherwise arranged on said base is an upright or guard member 11. This member or element 11 is substantially L-shaped in form and has a guard portion 12 extending substantially the entire width of the base 10, a part 13 to secure the member to the base, and a shorter guard portion 14.

A marking member or element 15 is detachably or otherwise held or supported on the end 16 of the base and at a distance from the guard portion 12 to provide a space for the skirt 17 of the wearer, and said member 15 has a base portion 18 to rest upon the end 16 of the base and an upright portion 19. This portion 19 comprises two members 20 and 21 which may be detachable from each other and said member 20 is intended to be used when the skirt is to be comparatively short. Each of the members 19 and 20 has projecting parts 22 forming horizontally arranged guide or straight edges, and said guides or straight edge parts 22 may be stamped from the body of the member in the manner shown or arranged or constructed in any other desired way. These guides or straight edge portions 22 are spaced apart usually one inch or any other desired distance and are intended to serve as guides for the chalk used to mark the skirt.

It will be seen that if the person on whom the skirt is being fitted will stand on the base 10, the lower edge of the skirt may be caused to pass in the space between the member 15 and the guard portion 12, so that if the person moves slowly or a short distance at a time, the tailor or other person may mark along one of the straight edges 22 so that when the person has made one complete movement, the skirt will be uniformly marked one or more inches from the ground according to the wishes of the wearer, the part 1 1 serving as a guard to keep the foot of the person wearing the skirt a proper distance from the guard portion 12.

The member 19 of the marking element has two hooked portions or retaining parts 23 at opposite edges thereof which are adapted to receive the ends 24 of the member 20. This member 20 may be of any desired height and may have any number of straight edges or parts 22 and is used ordinarily only when the skirt is to be very short, otherwise the said member 20 may be detached from the member 19. The marking element or member 15 may be separate from the base 10 or attached thereto as desired, and said element may have an additional slot or marking portion 25 when the skirt is to reach substantially the level of the ground, the lower edge of the slot serving as the marking edge in this case.

From the foregoing, it will be seen that a simple and efiicicnt device is provided whereby a skirt may be marked to make the same of any desired length; that said marking may be made uniformly and very easily; that by making the marking element of two detachable members, the said device is better fitted for use when skirts are being made of various lengths, and that said device is simple in construction and may be readily and cheaply made.

Having thus described my invention, I claim new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A levice of the character described, comprising a base, a substantially L-shaped guard member having a portion adapted to it within the skirt and form a backing while marking the skirt and a relatively short part as a guard for the foot, and a marking element comprising two members and supported on the base, each marking member having horizontally extending guides and straight edges with spaces between the same and with hooked portions on one member to receive the ends of the other member to detachably hold said members together.

2. A device of the character described, comprising a base, a substantially L-shaped guard member secured to said base and having a portion adapted to fit within the skirt and form a backing while marking the same and a relatively short-part as a guard for the foot, and a marking element supported on a part of said base and comprising two detachable members each having horizontally extending and spaced guide and straight edges, substantially as and for the purpose described.

3. A device of the character described, comprising a base, a guard member secured to said base and having a portion adapted to fit within the skirt and form a backing while marking the same and a relatively short part as a guard for the foot, a marking element comprising two detachable members supported on apart of said base each marking member having horizontally extending and spaced guide and straight edges, one of said marking members having a straight lower portion and the other hav ing hooked portions to receive the ends of the other member to detacha-bly hold said members together.
