Description

Feb. 3, 1970 J. B. BERTELINK BREASTPOCKET; HANDKERCHIEF Filed Dec. 22, 196' INVENTOR. Jon B. Bertelink AT TOR N EYS.
United States Patent Int. Cl. A4lb 15/00 U.S. Cl. 2279 5 Claims ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A breastpocket handkerchief assembly is provided wherein the handkerchief is wrapped about an adjustable supporting plate, which both rigidifies the handkerchief in use, and which provides means for ready adjustment of the same upon insertion into the pocket of a user.
The invention relates to a breastpocket handkerchief that is worn visibly in the pocket.
When a breastpocket handkerchief is worn it is a requirement that this is positioned in the correct position in the pocket, also is not wrinkled but also protrudes over the right distance above the rim of the pocket. This cannot always be easily realized, as the depth of the one pocket often strongly deviates of that of another one. When a breastpocket handkerchief contains a certain quantity of material with a relatively shallow pocket, a certain quantity of material has to be put into that pocket, owing to which the pocket can become bulging while it becomes more difiicult to make the upper part of the breastpocket handkerchief protrude out of the pocket in a correct way. When the breastpocket handkerchief must be positioned in a relatively deep pocket the danger is present that the breastpocket handkerchief sinks away in it and does not protrude over a certain distance over the rim of the pocket. Therewith it is always diflicult to fold the upper part of the breastpocket handkerchief correctly.
The invention now removes these difiiculties by providing a breastpocket handkerchief which is characterized in that it has been fixed to a support plate in the folded up condition and that means are present to change the distance between the lower part of the support plate and the upper point of the breast pocket handkerchief, so that the total length of the whole can be adapted to the depth of the pocket in which the breastpocket handkerchief is worn.
Hereby it is obtained at the same time that the upper part of the breastpocket handkerchief protrudes in the correctly folded position and over the right length above the rim of the pocket.
According to the preferred embodiment the support plate now consists of two parts, one part of which being fixedly arranged-in the breastpocket handkerchief and the second part being shiftable with respect to the first part, such, that the lower rim of the shiftable part protrudes over a certain distance under the lower rim of the first part.
Hereby it is reached that the upper part of the breastpocket handkerchief must be as large as possible.
Herewith it is also desired that the two parts of the support plate with respect to each other, have been fixed in nearly one plane, which is reached in that the breastpocket handkerchief, by means of a rivet or suchlike jointing element has been fixed on the first part of the support plate, which nail also runs through a slot running in vertical direction of the shiftable part of the support plate.
3,492,677 Patented Feb. 3, 1970 With such way of execution consequently only one jointing element is necessary for fixedly mounting the breastpocket handkerchief on the two parts of the support plate that are shiftable with respect to each other.
The two parts of the support plate are kept in a certain position with respect to each other by the frictional power between the mutual parts and between the replaceable part and the material of the breastpocket handkerchief. Said frictional powers sometimes can be insufiicient, e.g. when using easily slidable materials, for keeping the breastpocket handkerchief constant in the correct position.
The invention provides herein in that the rims of the slot in the shiftable part of the support plate running in longitudinal direction, are notchedly executed. As the material of the support plate is somewhat flexible, the plate can easily be shifted by hand, while the power, necessary for said shifting, is large enough for preventing an undesired shiftment during wearing.
Preferably the support plate will have been made of a somewhat flexible, boiling-, launderingand ironing-durable material.
The breastpocket handkerchief then needs not to be loosened from the support plate, but the whole can be washed when the breastpocket handkerchief 'has become dirty whereby boiling out can take place, if necessary, and the breastpocket handkerchief can be ironed too. It is clear that the breastpocket handkerchief can also be made of a no-iron material.
The invention now is further elucidated on hand of an performance example, shown in the drawing, in which:
FIG. 1 shows a front view of a breastpocket handkerchief according to the invention;
FIG. 2 shows a rear view of the same breastpocket handkerchief; and
FIG. 3 shows a section according to the line IIIIII of FIG. 2.
The breastpocket handkerchief 1 shown in the drawing has been folded such, that the front side has been composed out of the layers of material 1a and 1b, which have been folded down at one of the longitudinal sides to the layers 1c and 1a, lying at the back side, whereas the other longitudinal side has been folded back to the layers 1e and 1 lying at the back side and on the layers 10 and 1d.
Between the layers 1a and 1c the support plate has been positioned, that has been composed of the permanent part 2 and the shiftable part 3.
In the shiftable part 3 the slot 4 is present, through which the rivet 5 runs, which keeps the construction of breastpocket handkerchief 1 and the plates 2 and 3 together.
For claritys sake the layers la-lf of the breastpocket handkerchief and the plates 2 and 3 have been drawn at some distance from each other, but it will be clear that these layers, at any rate at the location of the rivet 5, are pressed firmly against each other. By this a frictional power is generated between the two sides of the plate 3 on the ne hand, resp. the plate 2 and the layer 10 of the breastpocket handkerchief 1 on the other hand; in such a way that the plate 3 will not easily shift with respect to the breastpocket handkerchief 1.
Rivet 5 can also be replaced by another fastening element, which if necessary can be loosable. Preferably however the rivet .5 is permanent so that the breastpocket handkerchief always remains correctly folded and the whole has been made of such materials, that the construction, without loosening the connecting element 5, can be washed. The plates 2 and 3 then preferably consist of a synthetic material that is boiling-, launderingand ironing durable.
Preferably the plates 2 and 3 are of a somewhat flexible material so that the Whole of the breastpocket handkerchief can adapt itself to the model of the pocket.
As indicated in the drawing the longitudinal rims of the slot 4 can be notched. By this an undesired shiftment will further be encountered.
It is clear that the plate 3 with the slot 4 arranged therein has been executed such, that the lower side of the plate 3 can get lying equal with the lower rim of the layers 1a etc. of the breastpocket handkerchief 1, while therewith the upper or side rims of the plate 3 do not protrude outside the layer 1a.
Though the breastpocket handkerchief shown in the drawing is provided with a point extending upwardly, it will be clear that the upper rim can also be fiat or can have any other shape, while also the number of layers into which the breastpocket handkerchief is folded does not play a part in itself. Other changes can also be made without falling outside the inventive idea.
What I claim is:
'1. Breastpocket handkerchief assembly comprising a flat supporting means having a lower edge, a breastpocket handkerchief folded about said supporting means and having an open end for passage of said lower edge of said supporting means therethrough, for a selected distance, said supporting means being relatively rigid with respect to said breastpocket handkerchief, fastening means retaining the breastpocket handkerchief in the folded condition and fixing it with respect to the supporting means, said supporting means having adjusting means for adjusting the distance between said lower edge of said supporting means and said breastpocket handkerchief, thr ugh said open end of said wrapped handkerchief.
2. Breastpocket handkerchief assembly according to claim 1, in which said support means comprises two plates, one of which is fixedly counted in said breastpocket handkerchief and the second plate being shiftable with respect to said first plate, such that the lower edge of said shiftable plate depends over an adjustable distance below the underside of the breastpocket handkerchief.
3. Breastpocket handkerchief assembly according to claim 2, in which said breastpocket handkerchief is secured to said first plate by means of a fastening element, and including a vertical slot in said second plate, said element also passing through the vertical slot in said second plate.
