. I WM ALEXANDER F. SMITH, OF READING, PENNSYLVANIA.
SASH-FASTENER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed March 9, 1910.
Patented Sept. 6, 1910. Serial No. 548,200.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALEXANDER F. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Reading, in the county of Berks and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sash-Fasteners, of which the fol lowing is a specification.
My invention relates to improved fastening means for the meeting rails of sliding window sashes, and my object is to provide in connection with commonly used means for locking the closed sashes, a simple attachment adapted to be used in cooperation therewith when it is desired to lock the sashes in relatively adjusted position.
The invention is fully described in connection with the accompanying drawings and is specifically pointed out in the claims.
Figure 1 is a sectional view showing the meeting rails of an inner and outer sash locked in closed position by ordinary fastening means; my improved attachment being shown in lowered or inoperative position in full lines, and its raised or operative position being indicated by dotted lines. Fig. 2 is an enlarged plan View of the complete fastening means as shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an elevation showing the strike member of the outer sash with my attachment thereto; the latter being shown in normal lowered position, but indicated by dotted lines in raised positions where it is adapted to cooperate with the locking member on the relatively adjusted inner sash. Fig. 4 shows a modification in which the base-plate of the strike member is specially formed to provide for the direct pivoting thereto of my attachment.
Referring to the simple sash-fastening means in connection with which my invention is illustrated, 1 indicates a base-plate secured by screws 2 and 8 to the top rail 4 of the innersash and having a cam-lever 5 pivoted'thereto; and 6 indicates a similar base-plate secured by screws 7 and 8 to the bottom rail 9 of the outer sash, and formed with a keeper-hook 10 adapted to be engaged by the rotated cam-lever 5 when the sash rails t and 9 are approximately at the same height, so as to lock them together as usual in closed position.
The main object of my invention is to provide an improved attachment adapted to be conveniently employed in connection with ordinary fastening means for the closed sashes as described, for the purpose of enabling the sashes to be locked together in relatively adjusted positions such as are required for securing a greater or less degree of ventilation. To this end I employ a separate keeper-bar 11 pivotally mounted at a point 12 on the outer sash rail 9, adjacent the end of the keeper base-plate 6, so as to inconspicuously lie upon said outer rail 9 when in normal lowered position as shown, and to swing upward in the plane of the fixed keeper-hook 10; said bar being formed with a series of keeper- hooks 13, 13 18 respectively adapted to be engaged by the camlever 5 when the pivoted bar 11 is raised into elevated position and arranged at a greater or less angle to the rail as indicated by the dotted positions-the cam-lever engaging either of said hooks 13, 13 13', as determined by the slant of the bar, in the same manner as it engages the hook 10 of the main strike member.
As indicated in Fig. 3 the pivotal support 15 for the keeperbar 11 is separately formed and independently attached by screw 16 to the rail 9, so that the bar may be conveniently employed in cooperation with the ordinary strike-member; but if desired a pivot lug 15' may be formed upon the end of the base-plate 6, for attachment of the bar 11, as indicated in Fig. 4. The keeper-hook 10 is employed as usual to lock the sashes together in closed position, while the keeperbar 11 serves to lock them in relatively adjusted position as desired; the incline of the bar 11, when in service, tending to press the adjusted sashes laterally against the sides of the frame and thereby prevent rattling.
mat I, claim is 1. The combination with a fastener member for one sash comprising a base-plate and a cam-lever pivoted thereto, of a strike member for the outer sash comprising a baseplate having an integrally formed keeper hook for engaging said cam-lever, and a pivotally mounted notched keeper-bar arranged to swing in the plane of said keeper-hook and to assume varying angles for engaging adapted for side-by-side attachment to the 10 other sash.
In testimony whereof, I aflix my s1gnatnre, 111 the presence of tWo witnesses.
