INVENTDR flw m WITNESSES 2 A TORNEYS MAX GLASS, OF VIENNA, AUSTRIA-HUNGARY.
FILLING FOR EXPLODING IPROJIECTILES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 30, 1910.
Original application filed November 20, 1909, Serial No. 529,408. Divided and this application filed June 30, 1910. Serial No. 569,811.
To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that I, MAX GLAss, a subject of the Emperor of Austria-Hungary, and a resident of 176 I-Iadikgasse, Vienna, Austria- Hungary, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Filling for Exploding Projectiles; and I do hereby declare the.
my application Serial No. 529,408, filed November 1909.
My invention relates to the filling for ex- 2 plosive double walled projectiles, and the particular object of my invention is to provide a suitable filling for the annular chamber inclosed between the two walls of the projectile.
My improved filling consists of separately formed briquets so shaped that they can be readily assembled into rings fitting within the annular chamber of the projectile, to this end the briquets are shaped as partial segments of rings, each segment comprising two triangular wedge-shaped elements which may be described as half of ring segments, the latter being cut on a plane passing through diagonally opposite radial edges of the segment.
The briquets may be solid or porous. In the latter event the briquet will become satl j litilwwith a lffl'dTxplosfi'e' sholi'llTflie interior of the exp oslve pro ectiie be filled therewith, and in this event the briquets would themselves become explosive.
The annular chamber between the two walls of the projectile may be filled either partially or entirely with the briquets and as explained the latter may be either explosive or merely projectile elements. If desired both kinds of b'riquets may be employed simultaneously and may alternate in layers one with the other.
My new filling is shown by way of example in the accompanying drawing in which,
' Figure 1 is a perspective of a ring of seg ments shaped in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2 is a perspective of a pair of briquets comprising a ring segment; Fig. 3 is a similar view with the briquets separated; and Fig. 4 is a section through an explosive projectile in which my improved filling is employed.
Referring to the drawing, the briquets 0 and f are assembled into rings a which are placed in the annular chamber of the projectile (Z formed between the inner tube 5 and the outer shell 0. The rings consist of series of segments of the shape clearly shown in Fig. 2, each of which segments is com posed of two briquets c and f, formed as described and shown in Fig. 3.
I claim as my invention 1. A filling for a double walled projectile, comprising briquets shaped to form rings fitting within the annular chamber of said projectile, substantially as described.
2. A filling for a double walled projectile, comprising briquets shaped as divided, ring segments fitting when matched, as a ring within the annular chamber of said projectile, substantially as described.
3. A filling for a double walled projectile, comprising briquets shaped as ring segments, cut on a plane passing through diagonally opposite radial edges of the segment, so that when matched said briquets form a ring fitting within the annular chamber of said projectile, substantially as described.
4. A filling for a double-walled projectile, comprising a series of rings of briquets, each of said rings comprising a series of matched briquets, substantially as described.
5. A filling for a double-walled projectile, comprising a series of rings of briquets, each of said rings comprising a series of matched briquets, at least some of said briquets being of porous nature, adapted to absorb a liquid explosive placed in the inner chamber of the projectile.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
MAX GLASS. lVitnesses Romnrr XV. Hnmcan'rnnn, AUGUST Fucenn.
it is hereby certified that in Letters Patent No. 969,102, granted August 30, 1910, upon the application of Max Glass, of Vienna, Austria-Hungary, for an improvement in Filling for Exploding Projectiles, an error appears in the printed specification requiring correction as follows: In the heading to the printed specification the Words and figures Original application filed November 20, 1909, should read Original applz'catzlm filed rvo'uember 22, 1909; and that the said Letters Patent should be read with this correction therein that the same may conform to the record of the case in the Patent Ofiice.
Signed andsealed this 25th day of October, A D., 1910.
