To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WILLIAM B. HOGAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Albany, in the county of Albany and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ice-Cream Spoons, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in ice cream spoons.

Considerable difliculty has heretofore been experienced in this class of spoons, due to the fact that the scraper being of thin material breaks at the juncture with its operating shaft or spindle necessitating the throwing away of the spoon, or returning it to the manufacturer for repairs. This weakness in the structure not only becomes expensive but obviously produces an impractical commercial device.

According to my present invention, I provide means between the scraper and its shaft for quickly and conveniently separating these two elements, whereby when a scraper breaks, or for other reasons it is essential for it to be removed from the bowl, a new one may be quickly attached, thereby prolonging the life of the spoon at a reasonable additional cost.

The invention also relates to the specific details of construction and arrangement of parts which will be hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.

In the drawings: Figure 1, is a plan view of my improved spoon. Fig. 2, is an elevation of the same, partially in section. Figs. 3 and 41, are end and face views of the scraper. Fig. 5, is an elevation of the operating shaft or spindle. Fig. 6, is a view of the screw or locking connection between the scraper and its spindle. Figs. 7, S, 9 and 10, are views of a slight modification.

The numeral 1, indicates a handle, provided at one end with a bowl 2. At the point where the handle joins the bowl is formed a bearing 3, and in alinement therewith, in the bowl, is an opening 4, forming a bearing for a trunnion on the scraper.

The scraper 5, is semi-circular and fits within the bowl, in the usual manner, and is formed at or near one end with a trunnion 6, which fits in the bearing A, and at its opposite end it is bent in alinement with the trunnion to provide an extension 7, which is formed with an opening 8.

The numeral 9, indicates the scraper shaft 'ment of the same,

or spindle. The spindle is mounted in the bearing 3, and at its opposite end is suitably supported, and is provided with a pinion 10. The end of the spindle adjacent the bowl is formed with a slot 11, and opening 12. The extension 7 of the scraper fits snugly in the slot 11, and against the end of the wall thereof, its opening 8, and the opening 12,' registering. A screw or other locking device 13, passes through the openings 8 and 12, to securely lock the two elements together, so as to cause them to be revolved as a unit. The opening 12, is threaded to receive the threads of the screw 13, but it will be understood this is not absolutely essential, as the invention comprehends broadly a locking device. The spindle is formed with an annular reduced portion 14, adjacent its end to engage a bearing 15, on the handle to readily hold the spindle and handle in the proper relative position.

In the modification shown in Figs. 7 to 10, I have shown a locking means in which the screw is dispensed with. 16, indicates a hollow extension on the end of the scraper, which takes the place of the extension This extension 16 is formed With a slot 18, having a longitudinal open end 19, a right angle portion 20, and a second longitudinal end portion 21. The spindle 23, is provided with an outwardly projecting pin 24, which cooperates with the slot to form the locking means. Vhen assembling this form of the invention, the end of the spindle is fitted in the extension and the pin 24, in the slot. Then the spindle is given a slight turn until the pin is brought into alinement with the longitudinal portion 21, and is then forced farther into the extension. hen the end of the spindle is finally seated in the extension, the pin snugly engages the walls of the slot, consequently the two elements will turn together in the same manner as described in connection with the preferred form of the invention. The spindle being confined in its bearings, will prevent longitudinal movehence the slot and pin will be held in proper relation to effect a lock between the parts.

A spoon constructed as described, will obviously afford a convenient means for substituting a scraper when the one breaks, which will materially prolong the life of the article, and thereby save the necessity of discarding the entire spoon.

What I claim is:

1. An ice cream spoon comprising a handle and bowl, a spindle, a scraper operating in the bowl, a detachable interlocking connection between the scraper and the spindle, to rigidly fasten the latter and the scraper toget-her, and means on the handle and bowl for detachably mounting the spindle and scraper, the latter means permitting the removal of the spindle and scraper when locked together, and the detachable interlocking connection permitting the scraper and spindle to be separated after removal from the handle and bowl.

2. An ice cream spoon comprising a handle and bowl, a spindle, a scraper having a trunnion at one end and its opposite end extended in alinement with the trunnion, the extended end having an opening and engaging the spindle, and a locking device engaging the opening in the extended end of the scraper and the spindle.

3. An ice cream spoon comprising a handle and bowl, a spindle, a scraper operating in the bowl and means for locking the spindle and scraper together, said lock comprising a pin and slot, whereby when said lock is disengaged the scraper will be unsupported in the bowl.

4. An ice cream spoon comprisinga handle and bowl, a spindle, a scraper operating in the bowl, and a. lock for securing the spindle and scraper together, said lock comprising a socket, a. pin and an opening to receive the pin.

5. An ice cream spoon comprisinga handle and bowl, a bearing formed in the handle adjacent the bowl, a spindle, a scraper operating in the bowl and formed with a trunnion and an extended end in alinement with the spindle, and a locking device between the extended end and the spindle, the looking device being located adjacent the bearing.

6. An ice cream spoon comprising ahandle and bowl, a spindle mounted on the handle and formed with a slot and perforations, a scraper operating in the bowl and having a perforated extension fitting in the slot in the spindle, and a pin passing through the perforations in the spindle and extension to lock the scraper and spindle together.

7. An ice cream spoon comprising a handle and abowl, a spindle mounted on the handle and formed with a vertical slot at its end and perforations in the Walls of the slot and at an angle forated extension in alinement with the spindle and fitting in the slot, and a pin passing through the perforations in the spindle and the extension to lock the scraper and spindle together.

8. An ice cream spoon comprising a handle and bowl, a spindle formed with a slot at one end, a scraper fitting in the bowl and having one end bent at an angle to fit in the slot in the spindle, and a fastening device passing through the spindle and angular portion of the scraper to lock the parts together.

9. An ice cream spoon, comprising a bowl and handle, a spindle formed at its end with a transverse slot, a scraper operating in the bowl, the end of the scraper fitting into the transverse slot in the spindle and ascrew fitting in the spindle and passing through the end of the scraper to lock the latter and the spindle together.

10. An ice cream spoon comprising a bowl formed with a bearing, a handle, a bearing formed in the handle, a spindle mounted on the handle and supported in the bearing, said spindle having a transverse slot in its end adjacent the bowl, a scraper in the bowl, said scraper having a trunnion at one end and its opposite end in alinement with the spindle to engage the transverse slot, and a lock for securing the end of the scraper in the slot of the spindle.
