To. all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, Josnrrr E. GAVIN, a subject of the King of Great Britain, and a resident of thecity of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Bed and Douche Pan, of which the following isa full, clear, and exact description.

This invention relates to a new and improved pan, to be used for bedridden in valids, or otherwise.

An object of this invention is to provide a device which will be simple in construction, inexpensive to manufacture, strong, durable, comfortable, and readily accessible for the purpose of cleaning.

A further object of this invention is to provide a device of this character with a receptacle and a removable pneumatic cushion of a new and improved type.

These and further objects, together with the construction and combination of parts, will be more fully described hereinafter and particularly set forth in the claims.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views, and in which Figure 1 is a top plan view, partly'in section to show the underlying structure; Fig. 2 is a vertical section on the line 22 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a top plan View showing the pan with the pneumatic cushion removed; and Fig. 4 is a vertical end view, partly in section on the line of Fig. 3.

rate parts of the device, 1 indicates the receptacle or container portion of the pan,

which may be made of any suitable material, such as stamped sheet metal. The receptacle 1 comprises a bottom 2 and an upwardlyextending flange 3, which terminates in a supporting rim 4. The rim 4 does not extend over the whole portion of the pan, but is U-shaped in form, and extends only over the rear portion of the pan, leaving the front open, as will be clearly seen by reference to Figs. 1, 2, and 3, so that the interior of the pan may be readily accessible for the purpose of cleaning. The rim 3 slopes outwardly at the front, and is formed with a lip 5, whereby the contents may be readily poured out.

Secured to the receptacle 1 in any well known manner, as by being soldered or riveted to the rim at, there is provided a holder 6, which is in the form of a U-shaped member provided with a locking flange 7, extending adjacent to the inner, boundary. ofthe rim at. The outer sides of the holder 6 from the points 8 toward the front are also provided with flanges 9, which, while shown connected totheiflange 7 at the front, mayor may not be so connected, as desired. The

circular portion of the holder 6, at the rear,

is open, for a purpose to bedescribed.

The holder 6 is for the purpose of securing tothe receptacle 1, a flexible cushion 10,

which may be of any suitable construction, such as a pneumatic tube, or a porous rubber member, just so that suflicient resilience on each side thereof, which are adapted to engage under the flanges 7 and 9, for the purpose of forming a positive connect-ion between the cushion 10 and the receptacle 1. Inasmuch as the rear of the holder 6 is open, the cushion can be slid into the holder G by inserting the legs thereof first, and snapping the rear edge of the rim 14 over an upstanding lug 15 provided on the rear of the holder 6. It will thus be seen that this lug 15 positively retains the rims 13 and 14 in engagement with the flanges 7 and 9, preventing the accidental removal of the cushion 10 from the receptacle 1. The

cushion 10 is provided with a suitable nipple 16, whereby it may be inflated or defiated. The holder 6 and cushion 10 may be made more ovate and the ends brought nearer together.

It is to be noted that the receptacle 1 slopes on its upper side from the front toward the rear, thereby forming an inclined support for the cushion 10, so that the pan, as a whole, may be readily inserted beneath a bedridden patient, without danger of injuring the patient.

The utility of the device will be readily understood when taken in connection with the above description.

This device can be used as a bed pan or douche pan, and, when used as the former, by reason of its slope can be readily in serted beneath a bedridden patient without any great discomfort to the latter. It will be seen that the yielding cushion 10 forms a very comfortable, easy support for the body.

The peculiar structure of the receptacle and its relation to the supporting holder for the cushion is such that the front end of the receptacle is left open so that it is readily accessible for the purpose of cleaning, and thereby provides an entirely sanitary device.

The simple attachment of the cushion 10 to the receptacle 1, by means of the holder 6, provides a structure which permits the ready and quick attachment and detachment of the cushion from the receptacle, without the necessity of manipulating easily breakable and complicated catches or locking mechanism.

'If desired, the cushion 10 may be used separate from the receptacle 1, as a chair cushion for an invalid, and, because of its U-shaped form, will provide an exceedingly comfortable and yielding support. It is to be noted that, in inserting the cushion 10, the base can be readily snapped over the lug 15, and secured in position without any trouble.

\Vhile I have shown one embodiment of my invention, I do not wish to be limited to the specific details thereof, but desire to be protected in various changes, modifications and alterations which I may make within the scope of the appended claims.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. In a device of the class described, the combination with a receptacle, of a holder connected to said receptacle, said holder being provided with a flange on its inner edge and being open at the rear, and a cushion adapted to be removably secured to said receptacle by engagement with said flange on said holder.

2. In a device of the class described, the combination with a receptacle, of a holder on said receptacle, said holder having a locking flange formed on its inner edge and also having flanges 011 its outer edge, said holder also being open at its rear, a cushion adapted to be removably secured to said receptacle by engagement with said flanges, and a lug on said holder adapted to secure said cushion against movement relative to said holder.

3. In a device of the class described, the combination with a receptacle, of a holder secured to said receptacle, a flange on said holder extending along the inner edge thereof, and for a fraction of the distance from the front toward the rear along the outer edge thereof, an upwardly-extending lug on said holder, and a cushion adapted to be secured to said receptacle by means of said holder and adapted to be held in position (511 said holder by means of said lug.

4. In a device of the class described, the combination with a receptacle, of a cushion on said receptacle, flanges connected to said receptacle and extending over said cushion and adapted to secure said cushion to said receptacle, said flanges extending around the front, inner and outer sides of said cushion, leaving the rear open, whereby said cushion may be inserted beneath said flanges, and a lug on the rear of said receptacle for maintaining said cushion in position.

5. In a device ofthe class described, the combination with a receptacle, of a cushion on said receptacle, said cushion comprising a casing and a flat face secured to said casing in spaced relation therefrom and having edges projecting to form rims, and flanges connected to said receptacle and extending toward each other and over said rim, whereby said cushion is secured to said receptacle.
