SLAG STEAM-GENERATOR.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE MITCHELL, of Swansea, in the county of Yuma and Territory of Arizona, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Slag Steam- Generators; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in slag steam generators,the object of the invention being to provide simple and eflicient means for equalizing the pressure at respective sides of each of the valves through which slag is passed from one chamber to another.
With this and other objects in view the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts as hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation of a slag steam generator embodying my improvements. Fig. 2 is a simi lar view taken at right angles to Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail sectional View.
1 represents the boiler comprising a shell 2 having an upper head 3 secured thereto and provided at its lower end with a conical bottom 4 secured within the lower end of the body portion 2 of the boiler. Brackets 6 are secured to the shell or body 2 of the boiler for supporting the same on a suitable structure. The boiler 1 is also provided in its head 3 with an outlet nozzle 7 with which a suitable pipe will be connected for conveying steam to any desired point of consumption. A steam gage 8 also communicates with the boiler through the head 3 thereof and a water gage 9 is also provided. The shell or body of the boiler will preferably be provided with a covered man-hole as indicated at 10 and a similarly covered manhole as indicated at 11 (one or more) is provided in the conical bottom portion 4 of the boiler.
A sleeve 12 is secured upon the head 3 of the boiler and communicates with an opening therein. Upon this sleeve a valve casing 13 is secured for inclosing a valve 1 1. A flanged sleeve 16 is secured upon the valve casing 13 and receives the lower conical end of a receptacle 17. A casing 18 communi- Specification of Letters Patent.

cat-es with the upper end of the receptacle 17 and contains a valve 19, and with the top of the chamber 18, a hopper 2O communicates.
The lower end of the conical bottom 1 of the boiler is connected with a flanged sleeve 21 and the latter is secured upon a casing 22 containing a valve 23. The valve casing 23 communicates at its lower end with a receptacle 24 and the latter is provided with a conical lower end 25 which communicates with the casing 26 of a valve 27. All of the valves above referred to are the same in construction and a detailed description of one will suflice for all. Each of said valves is of the plug type and provided at one end with a socket 28 for the reception of the head 29 of a valve rod 30,the latter being provided at its free end with a suitable operating lever 31 and suitable packing is provided for the valverod.
The receptacle 17 forms a chamber in which a slag pot 32 is located. This slag pot has secured thereto a pin 33 which constitutes one trunnion therefor mounted in a bearing 34C. The opposite trunnion for the slag pot consists of a block 315 having a curved lower face mounted on a bearing afforded by a flange 36 on a casting 37 secured to the wall of the receptacle 17. The
A block 35 is provided with a socket 38 for the reception of a head at the end of a shaft 39, and the casting 37 is made with a suitably packed bearing for said shaft. The casting 37 is also provided with an arm or yoke 10 having a bearing in alinement with the bearing in the casting, for the accommodation of said shaft. A suitable operating arm or lever 31 is secured to the shaft 39 for oscillating the slag pot.
Molten slag deposited in the hopper 20 will be permitted by the manipulation of the valve 19 to enter the receptacle 17 and become deposited in the slag pot 32. The operator will discharge the slag from this pot and, by the manipulation'of the valve 1 1, permit it to enter the boiler 1 and by commingling with the water therein, cause the generation of steam, which latter will find an exit through the pipe connected with the nozzle 7. The slag, being cooled by the water, will gravitate in granular form to the conical bottom of the boiler and will be permitted, when the valve 23 is opened, to
enter the slag receptacle 24. From this receptacle the granular slag can be removed through the valve 27 Tater will be supplied to the boiler through a pipe 41 from any suitable source of supply, and water may be admitted to the slag receptacle 24 through a valved pipe 42.
A pipe 43 communicates with the steam chamber of the boiler and this pipe is connected by means of a pipe 44, having a valve 45, with the top of the receptacle 17. A pipe 46 having a valve 47, also communicates at one end with the pipe 43 and at the other end with the slag receptacle 24. It is desirable that the pressure shall be equal above and below the valve 14 and to accomplish this, the valve 45 will be opened to permit steam to pass from the steam space of the boiler l to the slag pot chamber formed by the receptacle 17. Vhen a charge of molten slag shall have been discharged through the Valve 19 into the slag pot 32 and said valve closed, the-equalizing valve 45 will be opened for the purpose of equalizing the pressure at respective sides of the valve 14. The slag pot may now be turned to discharge the slag therefrom and the valve 14 opened to permit the molten slag to enter the boiler. Before the valve 19 is again opened to supply fresh charge of slag to the pot 32, the equalizing valve 45 will be closed but it is desirable to save the steam contained within the receptacle 17 and for this purpose a valved pipe 48 is connected with said receptacle and adapted to conduct steam therefrom to a feed water heater or other place of utilization.
After granulated slag has been removed through the valve 27 from the receptacle 24, considerable damage might be occasioned by the forcible entrance into this, now empty chamber 24, if the valve 23 be suddenly opened. In order to prevent such occurrence, I provide means whereby the pressure above and below the valve 23 will be equalized so that the slag will not enter the chamber 24 with suflicient force to injure the structure of the latter,said means consisting of the valved pipe 46 and the pipe 43 which permit the passage of steam from the steam space of the boiler to the chamber 24.
If desired, the chamber 24 can be filled with water from the valved pipe 42, after the slag contents of said chamber have been discharged and previous to again connecting said chamber 24 with the main boiler chamber.
Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is,
1. In a slag steam generator, the combination with a boiler, a superimposed chamber and a valve between said chamber and boiler, of a slag discharging device located within said chamber, and valved equalizing means connecting the steam space of the boiler with said chamber.
2. In a slag steam generator, the combination with a boiler, a superimposed chamber and a valve between said chamber and boiler, of a slag discharging device within said chamber, valved equalizing means connecting the steam space of the boiler with said chamber, and a steam discharge pipe communicating with said chamber.
3. In a slag steam generator, the combination with a boiler and means for discharging molten slag thereinto, of a receptacle for granular slag from the bottom of said boiler, a valve interposed between the bottom of the boiler and said granular slag receptacle, and valved equalizing means connecting the steam space of the boiler with said granular slag receptacle.
4. In a slag steam generator, the combination with a boiler, a superimposed receptacle, a valve interposed between said receptacle and boiler, means for discharging molten slag through said receptacle, a granular slag receptacle, and a valve interposed between the bottom of the boiler and said last mentioned receptacle, of valved pipes communicating with the steam space of the boiler and communicating respectively with the superimposed receptacle and the granular slag receptacle.
5. In a slag steam generator, the combination with a boiler, of. a receptacle above the same, a valve interposed between said receptacle and boiler, a hopper, a valve interposed between the hopper and receptacle, means for equalizing pressure at respective sides of the first mentioned valve, means for conducting steam from said receptacle, a granular slag receptacle, a valve interposed between the latter and the bottom of the boiler, and means for equalizing pressure at respective sides of said last mentioned valve.
