L. M. CAPRON, OF WORCESTER., MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TOALEXAN- DER BIGELOW ANI) GEORGE BARBER, 0F SAME PLACE.
Letters Patent No. 96,884, :lated November 16, 1869.
IMPROVEMENT IN STRIPPERS FOR CARDING--MACHINES The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and mal-:ing peut of the same Know all men by these presents y That I, L. M. I/APROX, of the city and county of \Vorcester, and Gounnonwealth oiMassachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Guiding-Machines; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact descril'ition of the same, reference being had to the accompanyingr drawings, forming,r a part oi' this siiecification, in which- Fignre l represents so much ot' a carding-inachine as is necessary to illustrate my improvements, and
' Figure 2 represent-s a top or plan view oi' the same.
lo enable those skilled in the art to which my invention belongs, to make and use the same, I will proceed to describe it more in detail. v
The nature of my invention consists in the combination, with the main carding-cylimler ota breaker or iinisher, and its dotlhr-cyliiuler, of a stripping or cleaning-cylinder, arranged'and operated as will be hereafter explained.
1n the drawings- A is the main frame, upon which the main cardingcylinder B, with its strippers and workers, is to be mounted in the usual manner.
D is the doli'er-cylinder, used in connection with the main carding-cyliinler B.
Underneath the cylindcrBainl D is arranged a stripping-cylinder, E, mounted in a swingingli'anie,11`, which turns on rockers or journals a, at each side ofthe Card.
The stripping-cylinder E is driven by a belt, b, and
' its speed is faster than the speed of the cylinders B and D, which it is designed to clean or strip.
The direction in which the. cylinders move is indicated by the arrows, and it will be observed 'that the smooth sides ot' the card-teeth oi the stripping-cylinder run against lthe smooth sides of the teeth on the other cylinders.
Frame l" has combined with it a handle, G, provided with a catch-plate having.)r notches 1, which cat-ch into the loop H on the main frame, whereby the frame E can be held in posit-ion to bring the stripping-cylinder into contact with the main cylinder B, or the doiiing-cylil'ider D, or in a position so as not to act upon either, as indicated in dark lines, lig. 1.
In applying the invention to thecylinderof a breaker in which a doing-cyliiuler, D, used, I propose to have a binder arranged to take up the slack of the belt l), which gives motion to the stripping-cylinderE, when the latter is moved in, to strip and clean the lnaiircylimlei'. Y
In applying the invention to finisher-cards, I nd it more convenient to'arrange the stripping-cylimier at the rear of the card, as shown in iigs. 1 and 2, the
'stripping-cylinder J, in this case, being supported in a frai'ne, K, jonrnalled at eaclrend, as indicated in the drawings.
Frame K is to have.J an arln, l), attached to it, whereby the stripping-cyliuder J can be moved up, as shown in dotted lines, to clean thecylindcr, or thrown back, as shown in full lilies, when not in use.
My invention has been applied to practical use, and has been folund to work well.
The stripping-cylinder is covered n'itlrcard-clctln infr.
In the operation of the stripper, the drtand bunches are cleaned or stripped from the main and dolier-cylinders in a very perfect manner, and thrown upon' the iloor, while the short., ilying libres are caught by the teeth of the main cylinder, and arc thus utilized.
It is also found that the operation ot' the strippingcylinder has a tendency to keep the teeth of the main cylinder and doi'l'er sharp'and in proper position.
Having described my improved carding-machiue, \Vliat I claim therein as new, and of myinvcntion, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination, with the main and doiTer-cylinders of a breaker carding-machine, ot' an adjustable stripping or cleaning-cylinder E, arranged and operated substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
L. M. GAPRON.
