Description
J. CROWE.
Thread Cutter for Sewing Machines.
--"No. 104,561. Patented June 21, 1870.
lllliltlittt 4 evening:
amt dtjiflim,
dialled lates O ROWE, ()F GUELPH, CANADA.
Letters Patent No. 104,561, dated J um 21, 1870.
' To all whom/65mm concern.-
Be it known that 1, JOHN GROWE, of Guelph, Ontario, Canada, have invented a new and improved Thread-Gutter for Sewing-Machines; and I do hereby declare that the following. is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification.
My invention relates-t0 thread-cutters for sewingmachines, and consists in the peculiar construction and arrangement of the cutter and concavity in the plate of the machine, whereby a more convenient andtiinesaving device is furnished to the public than those heretofore known.
Figure 1 representsza plan, and V Figure 2 a sectional side View of the plate and out. tcr. i
4 A is the plate, recessed at c, to foim a concavity,
whose face is curved to a maximum depth at or near theceuter, and shelved outwardly toward the edges.
B-isa knife or small blade, of steel, perforated at the back end, to receive a fastening-screw, which attaches it tothe plate. Its point forms a horizontal line with the back, and is flush, or nearly so, with the top surface of the plate. From the point, downward,
the blade-edge forms a curvilinear slope or incline,
over which the thread is passed by the operator.
1 The point of the knife is preferably located so that it reaches to, or nearly to, the center ordeepest part of the concavity.
By this construction of recess and knife, and this arrangement of the latter with respect to the former,
the thread is readily admitted under the knife, while the edges of the recess enable it to be held taut. By simply drawing it toward the operator, the thread is moved, held, and closely pressed against the inclined cutting-edge, at the same time, and with the smallest possible expenditure of labor.
Having thus described all that is necessary to a clear understanding of my'invention,
' What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isp The knife B, constructed and arranged as set forth, in the concavity G of a sewing-machine plate, for the purpose specified.
J OHN OROWE.
Witnesses I WILLIAM RILES, A. R. FAULKNER.
