Description
LEWIS` T. CLEMENT. OF IS1VIYRA, TENNESSEE.
team Palet: No. 93,057', daad July 2 7, 1869.
IMPRQVEMENT IN 4itinerante' Ponent-KING Ann CLEANING ,co'rron.`
v'.Lhe Schedule referred. to in these Letters Patent'andmakng'partf the same.
Tc all whom it may coiwern.-
Beit known thatI, LEWIS T. CLEMENT, of Smyrna,l
-in the county of Rutherford, and'State of Tennessee, have invented a new and improved Machine for Gin` ning and Carding Cotton and I do herebydeclare that the following is afull, clear, and exact 'description ofthe same, reference being had to the accompanying dx 'a w i ngs, which form part of this specification, and in w nc Figure l represents a longitudinal section of a machine -for this purpose, constructed according to' m-y invention, and r Figure 2, a plan view of thesame.
Figure 3 is an enlarged View ofthe device for opern ting the reciprocating brush.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both 'iigures l A This invention has for its principal object the -production of a continuous hat, orA sliver of cotton libre,
and also-of a cleanerandbetter quality-of lint direct character.
from seed-cotton; and, to this end,
It consists of a cotton-grinning and.carding-machine,v ot novel construction,'whereby the desired objects are :1t-tained.
Referring to the accompanying drawing"- A- represents theniain card, and
lB, the'doler-wheel ot' an ordinary carding-machine.
O isa cylindrical shaft, upon whiclris .carried the 'usual series of circular saws'c.
Between the card A and saw-shaft C is arranged a revolving cylinder, or drum, D, upon the periphery of which is carried a continuous brush, which covers its entire periphery, and which is designed, by means of its continuous nature, to convey the lint from. the teeth of the saws to the cardf'wheel A, in a continuous urll broken sliver. v- This drum D is provided not only with a rotary, but
` also with a longitudinal reciprocating motion, for the purpose of distributing the lint more evenly and uniformlyupon the card.. Y
This reciprocating motion may be imparted to said rotating brush, by means of a cam-disk, d, set at a suitable angle on the shaft of the brush, and Working 'in aviixed guide, b, attached to the frame of the machine, as shown in fig.V 3.
E is ashaft, arranged a little, above the separa'tingf line of thefsaw-shait (l andthe'brush D, and parallel therewith.
y Said shaftE is. armed with any number of ladial beating, or coinbing-pl'ates,f, which are supplied, at
their outer edges, with slots or notches, corresponding in number with the-number ,of circular 'saws upon the saw-shaft.
Through these said slots the teeth of thesaid saws are made to pass, while, by the revolving o'f the said beating, or combing-plates f, in an opposite direct-ion, the slot-s of cach plate are carried, in rapid succession,
' astridev the said teeth, in such manner as to exert a beating, Orcombing action upon thelint, thereby 'separatingthe motes and other foreign matter from the saine, while it is `being carried upnn the saws.
,By this means, the saidv lint may be left comparatively free from mot'es and other extraneous matter;
lhe. manner of operating the" machine is substane tially'the same as that ot' 'otl1er machines of similar in combination withfthe saws C and carding-cylinder A, substantially as and for the `purpose herein d escribed.
2. The combination'fwith the above, of the cam-disk al, operating in aiixed guide, secured tothe frame, for
communicating a reciprocating motion to the rotary' brush D, as set forth.
3. The combination, with the saws, of a cotton-giri-A ning machine, of revolving, beating, or combing-plates f, hav-ing slotted'outer edges, whereby motes and other extraneous matter may be separated from the lint, while it is being carried upon the saws, substantially as herein described. t.
4. The rotary brush D, having a reciprocating motion in direction of its axis, substantially as and for the purposelset forth Witnesses Trios. J. BAILEX, D. A. WELBORN.
What is herel claimed, and desired to be secured by. ALetters Patent, is-
l 1. The rotary brush D, having a continuous surface,
Lewis T. CLEMENT.
