AUTOMATIC DRAFT-REGULATOR.
Application led February 25, 1910. Serial No. 545,905.
.To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LOUIS SNELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at IVoodhaven, in the county of Queens, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Automatic Draft-Regulators; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention relates to draft regulators and more particularly to the class of automatic regulators for furnaces or the like.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a draft regulator in which a time device is employed with which a damper and draft door of a furnace are connected so that upon a predetermined time the said door and damper will be opened thus enabling the fire to be started and heat generated in the furnace.
Another object of the invention is the provision of an apparatus of this character in which a furnace after the fire has been banked therein all draft dampers and doors of the furnace may be automatically opened at a predetermined time whereby a draft therein may be established in order that the fire will be started and heat generated thus obviating the necessity of an attendant for this purpose.
A further object of the invention is the provision of an automatic draft regulator, which is simple in construction2 thoroughly reliable and effective in operation and inexpensive in the manufacture.
In the drawings accompanying and forming part of this specication is illustrated the preferred form of embodiment of the invention7 which to enable those skilled in the art to carry the invention into practice will be set forth at length in the following def scription, while the novelty of the invention Will be pointed out in the claims succeeding the description.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a view in elevation of the complete apparatus of this invention showing the same associated with the damper and draft door of a furnace. Fig. 2 is an enlarged elevation of the time clock and tripping portion of the apparatus. Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a detail view of the damper arm with the attaching sleeve connected thereto. Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of the chain hook with a portion of the chain weight attached thereto.
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views in the drawings.
Referring to the drawings by numerals 10 designates generally a furnace having the usual hinged door 11 and draft flue 12 provided with a rotatable damper 13 whereby the draft through the flue may be regulated when required.
Adjacent to the damper 13 and surrounding the fiue 12 are split clamping bands 14 the latter arranged in spaced relation to each other and detachably secured to the said iue in any suitable manner and these bands 14 have connected thereto hanger arms 15 supporting an alarm clock 16 the latter being of the ordinary well known construction.
The damper 13 is turned in the usual manner and supported upon a turning shank 17 the latter suitably ournaled in the flue and this shank has detachably fitted about it a split collar 1S provided with perforated lug extensions 19 to which is connected one end of a retractile spring 20 the latter having its remaining end fixed to the flue 12 at a point removed from the damper and this spring serves to open posit-ion within the flue. Also loosely connected to the lug eX- tensions 19 is a trip latch or hook member 21 the bill portion 22 of which is adapted to engage the alarm winding key 23 of the clock so that upon release of the alarm winding key 23 at a predetermined time designated on the face of the clock the tripping latch 21 will disengage from the said key 23 to permit the automatic opening of the damper 13 within the flue 12 of the furnace.
The furnace door 11 has attached thereto one end of a flexible draft door connection such as a chain 24 which extends over or in other words is trained over suitable guide pulleys 25 and has an operating Weight 26 secured thereto at its opposite end which weight is suiiicient to effect the necessary opening of the draft door 11 of the furnace.
Intermediate the ends of the flexible connection 24 at a suitable point thereof is mounted an S-shaped hook member 27 which latter is adapted to be hung upon a turning key or handle 28 at the end of the turning shank 17 supporting the damper 13 so that on the turning of the damper 13 to open position it will effect simultaneously the release of the member 27 from the handle 28 and through the medium of the Weight 26 the draft door l1 will be swung to open position. It being understood of course that the clock 16 is Wound in the usual manner and also that the alarm mechanism thereof is set in the ordinary Well known Way.
rlhe Weights used in this device comprise a series of graduating weights ranging from one-halt pound to a total of live pounds. rlhis set of Weights is composed oit' six round disks, to Wit; two of vone-half pound each, and :tour of one pound each, making a total Weight of five pounds. a collar on the shank and provided With a lug, a tripping member connected with the lug and the alarm key, a Weighted chain adapted for connection with a normally closed door, and means onV the chain for suspending its Weight upon the shank and y adapted to be released on the turning of the latter.

The combination with an alarm clock having a rotatable alarm key, of a normally closed flue damper having a turning shank, a- Collar on the shank and provided With a lug, a tripping member connected With the lug and the alarm key, a Weighted chain adapted for connecting With a normally closed door, and a hook on the chain for suspending its Weight upon the shank and adapted to be released on the turning of the lat-ter.
