To aZZ whom it may cncern.
Be it known that I, ANDREW J. ANDnRsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Parsons, in the county of Luzerne and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certaln new and useful Improvements in Draft-Regulators; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact descrlptlon of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertalns to make and use the same.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in draft regulators and has for its principal object to provide a dev1ce which may be attached to an ordmary coal range or similar household stove or furnace to enable the user to open or close the drafts automatically at a predetermined time.
Another and more specific object of the invention is to provide a device which will automatically lower the stove lid or a plurality of stove lids and simultaneously close the draft in the feed door and open the draft in the ash door thereby causing the air passing through the stove to pass through the ash pit and thence in through the chimney.
A still further object of the invention 1s to provide a means for holding the slides 1n their respective positions and provide a device which is capable of being fitted to a stove of any construction or size without necessitating any material change therein.
lVith these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts which will be fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings, in which,

the top of the stove provided with the usual stove lid 2. This stove lid is provided with the ordinary recess 3 into which the tongue 1 projects. The attachment which is designated generally by the numeral is shown in operative position with relation to the stove and will be more fully described hereinafter.
The attachment 5 above referred to comprises a base 6 having secured thereto the upright 7. This upright is offset at its upper end as at 8 and has riveted or otherwise secured as at 9 thereto the angular extension 10 carrying on its under side the hook 11 on which the alarm clock illustrated in dotted lines in Figs. 1 and 3 is arranged to be sup ported. Pivotally secured at 12 on the support 7 is the lever 13 having formed at its upper end the angular extension 14 which is designed to project beneath the bell and above the casing of the alarm clock so as to engage the clapper arm when the alarm rings. A suitable upright 15 is secured near one end of the base 1 and has pivotally secured at its upper end as at 16 a lever 17 which is twisted at 18 so that its edge will engage in the notch 19 formed in one edge of the lever 13. Pivotally secured on the pivot .point 12 of the lever 13 is the arm 20, the outer end of which carries the hook 21 while the inner end is cut away as at 22 to engage the under side of the lever 17. A suitable link 23 is pivotally secured at 24c to the arm intermediate the hook 21 and the pivot point 12 and the lower end of this link is pivoted to the lever 25 as at 26. This lever 25 is pivotally secured as at 27 to the upright 28 which is in turn supported on the end of the base 6 opposite the support 15. The end of the lever 25 opposite the pivoted end 26 is provided with the hook 29, the use of which will appear as the description proceeds.
A suitable loop spring 30 is'provided and is formed with the arm 31 and this arm 31 is provided with the hook member 32 which is .designed to extend into the base 6. The arm 31 extends parallel to the upper surface of the base 6 and is designed to hold the spring in operative position. A suitable arm 33 is formed at the opposite terminal of the loop portion 30 of the spring and this arm is secured to and lies in parallel relation with the lever'20 as indicated at 34 in Fig. 1. 'It will thus be seen that the spring tends .to force the hooked end 21 of the lever 20 is the flexible connection'35, the lower endof,
which is connected to the hook 36 of the stem 37 which stem is secured to the notch disk 38 which is designed to engage beneath the tongues 4 of the stove lid 2. It is to be understood that two or more flexible connections'35 may be secured to the hook 21 so thata number of stove lids may be held up wardly.
In'order that the slides may be actuated in the feed and ash pit doors there is provided the spring which is illustrated in Fig. 6 which comprises the bight portion 39 andarms 40 which arms converge towardth'ei'r free ends and are provided with the hooks 41' which aredesigned to'engage the knob of the door and the knob on the slides. hen this spring isused to close the slide in the feed door, the hooks 41 are respectively secured to a ring 42 which surrounds'hing'e pin and forms a connection therefor as clearly shown in Fig. 1. A. suitable ring 43 is slidableon the arms of the spring 39 and isdesigned to act as 'a guide to prevent the device from twisting out of place. I In order to hold the slide against movement under the influence of the spring there is provided the retainer or latch member designated generally by the numeral 44 which comprises the corrugated body 45, one end of which is extended as at 46 and provided with the downwardly extending bight portion 47 which'projects through the ring 42. The opposite end of this bight portion terminates in the extension 48 which lies on the upper surface of the ring and extends in the direction opposite the portion 46. The end of the corrugated body opposite the ex- 1 tension 46 is provided with the extension 49 whichterminates in the upstanding portion 50 having formed at its upper end the hook 51' to which the flexible connection 52 is secured. This flexible connection extends upwardly and the opposite end is secured to the hook 29'so that when the arm 25 swings upwardly the body 45 will be pulled upwardly thereby releasing the slide knob and permitting the spring 39 to move, the slide into open or closed position which ever the case maybe.
It will be apparent from the foregoing thatin use as soon as the alarm of the alarm" clock rings the shank of the hammer will strike the angular extension 14 on the lever 13 and thereby cause said lever to swing into the dotted line position illustrated in Fig. 1. This will permit the arm 17 to swing on its pivot 16 and thereby release the lever 20 which will assume the dotted line position illustrated in Fig. 1 thereby causing the stove lid to close and simultaneously raise the arm 25 by means of the link 28 into the dotted line position. The movement of the arm25 upwardly will exert pull on the flexible connection 52 which will in turn lift the body 45' upwardly and from engagement with the slide knob thereby permitting the slide to move under the influence of the spring into open or closed position. When the slide is'openated on the feed door it is apparent that the spring is so arranged as to cause the same to slide to closed position while the one on the ashdoor is arranged to slide to open position.
"lVhile in the foregoing there has been shown and described the preferred embodiment of this inventiom'it is to be understood that sueh changes may be made in the combination and arrangement of parts as will fall'withinthe' spirit and scope of the appended claims.
lVhat is claimed is 1. A draft regulator of the character described comprising a support, adapted to support an alarm clock, a lever pivoted to the support, said lever engaging the hammer ofthe alarm clock, an arm pivoted to the support, means carried by the arm to attach the same to a stove lid, an upright, a latch pivoted to the upright, said latch being arranged'to engage the arm to hold the store lid engaging end upwardly, a second upright, a lever pivoted to the second upright, a link connecting the arm with the second mentioned lever, a flexible connection at the free 'end of the second mentioned lever, a spring arranged to be secured to the slide knob of an ash pit door and to the hinge of said door to cause the slide to open, a retainer pivoted to hold the slide closed, and a flexible connection between the retainer and the last named lever to cause the retainer to release the slide and permit the same to open at a predetermined time.
