IMPROVEMENT IN' WATER-WIEELS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent: and making part of the same To all whom it may concern.
Beit known that I, ALoNzo WARREN, of flieston, in the county of Suiiolk, and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain Improvements in Turbine VVaterJVheels, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a plan of a turbine water-wheel, with my improvements applied thereto.

This inner casing is stationary, and is provided with a 'series of openings, b, for the passage of the water from the thune to the wheel.
A series of curved surfaces or scrolls, c, corresponding in number tothe inlet-openings b, is formed on' the inside of the inner casing D, between its upper rim o1' flange 6 and its lower flange 7.' j
Each scroll c extends from the inside to the outside ofthe flanges 6 7 E is' the outer shell or casing, which lits snugiy upon and is moved around thc out-side of the inner casing by'the toothed wheel G, engaging with a rack, H, the top of they inner casing heilig provided with a cap-plate, I, in bearings in which thc shaft of the toothed wheel G revolves.
The outer shell or casing E is also provided with a series of openings- (l and e, of corresponding forni and number as the inner casing I).
\Vhen the outer casing E is moved around so as to fully open the inlet-passages, the line ot' thc inside ofthe inner casing and the adjacent line of the inside j of the outer casing a, forming the outside ot' cach inlet-passage, unite and form nearly or exactly one and the same continuous curve or scroll, extending from one inlet opening to or nearly to the next inlet-opening, (see fig. 4,) whilel the outside, S, of the guidingcurve of the outer casing, and the youtside of' the guiding-curve of the inner casing, forni the inside ot' an unobstructed curved inlet-passage, thus insuring the unimpeded action of the water on all points of the circumference simultaneously.l

Instead ot' the construction above described, the inner casing may be movable within an outer stationary casing, without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Claims.
\Vhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isi An inner and 'an outer casing, so constructed and arranged, that when the inlet-passages'are fully open, .the line of the inside of the inner easing and the adjacent line of thc inside ot the outside casing form nearly or exactly' oneand the same` extended curved line, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
Also, in combination with the above, an unobstructed inlet-passage, the inside of which is formed by the union of the adjacent outside lines ofthe guid-v ing-curves ofthe inner and outer casings, substantially as and for the purpose set fort-h.
