To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK O. CASE, of East Bloomfield, in the county of Ontario, in the State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Fruit- Parers, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to cert-ain improvements in vegetable parers adapted to be used in connection with any of the commercial types of paring machines, in which the article to be pared is impaled upon a suitable fork or support and rotated against a cutting blade.
The main object of the invention is to afford a more effective clearing of the parings and thereby prevent clogging of the knife or paring device.
The parings vary in thickness according to the nature of the fruit or vegetable and one of the specic ob]` ects of the invention is to provide suitable adjustment for the clearing roller whereby the device may be rendered more efficient in operating upon different vegetables or fruit.
Other objects relating to specific parts of the device will be brought out in the following description:
In the drawings: Figures 1 and 2 are respectively face view and side elevation of a paring device embodying the previous features of my invention. Figs. 3, 4: and 5 are sectional views taken respectively on lines 3 3, 4-4 and 5 5.
In carrying out the objects stated a suitable head 1 is operatively connected to a paring machine (not shown) by means of a rod 2 the manner of connecting this rod to the machine forming no part to my present invention.
Rigidly secured to and preferably integral with the head 1 is a downwardly and laterally extending open frame disposed at an obtuse angle to the connecting rod Q and comprising a plate 3-, parallel side bars 4- and a cross bar 5 all of which parts are rigidly connected to each other forming an intervening opening 6 A plate or frame 7 is slidablv mounted upon the upper side of the plate 3 and 1s provided at one end with a downwardly projecting lug or ear 8- projecting through and guided in a lengthwise slot Q in the plate 3 said slot also receiving a clamping screw 10 which is screwed into a suitable threaded aperture in the plate 7- and engages the under side in the plate 3- to hold the sliding plate 7 in its adjusted position.
An adjusting screw 11 is engaged in a threaded aperture l2 in a lug 13- on the head 1 and its lower end is journaled in a suitable aperture in the ear 8 and is provided with shoulders engaging the opposite faces of said ear whereby t-he plate 7 may be moved endwise as the screw 11 is rotated. Theopposite or lower end of the plate 7- is provided at its sides with downwardly and laterally projecting ears M into which is journaled the opposite ends of a suitable roller l5 A knife blade l6 is adjustablysecured to the cross bar 5 and is held in its adjusted position by means of clamping screws 17- which are passed through an elongated slot 18 in the cutting blade -16 16 secured thereto are disposed in an upright plane substantially parallel with the axis of the rod Q but some distance at one side thereof and at an obtuse angle to the plate 7-, the cutting edge of said blade being adjusted in close proximity to the roller 15- and in nearly the same inclined plane as the sliding plate 7 The roller 15 is disposed in a space between the cutting edge of the knife 16 and adjacent edge of the adjustable plate 7- with its contact face in nearly the same inclined plane as that in which the plate 17 and cutting edge are located. It therefore follows that the axis of the roller 15 is disposed in a plane below or within that of the cutting edge of the knife. It is now clear that the roller which is mounted upon the adjustable frame or plate 7 is also adjustable toward and from the cutting edge of the knife at an obtuse angle thereto, so as to vary the intervening space between said knife and periphery of the roller to form the different thicknesses of parings. A clear open space is left between the side bars 4- and also between the roller and bar 5 so as to afford ample clearance for the passage of the parings therethrough. As previously stated the blade 16- stands in an upright position with its cutting edge uppermost, so that when the fruit or vegetables are rotated downwardly in the usual manner against the cut- The bar 5- and cutting bladey ting edge of the blade, the parings will be deflected between the blade and roller clear of the paring device. This adjustment of the blade r'elative to the roller and also the adjustment of the roller relative to the blade constitute the important features of my invention and not only enables the parings to readily clear themselves from the device by reason of their rolling contact with the roller but also permit the device to be read ily adjusted for paring different kinds of fruit or rather for producing thin or thick parings as may be required.
l/Vhat I claim is:
l. A vegetable paring device comprising a frame, a knife and a roller both mounted upon the frame and both adjustable in intersecting planes at obtuse angles to each other.
2. A paring device comprising a frame, a roller supporting plate adjustably mounted upon the frame, means for adjusting said plate, separate means for clamping the plate in its adjusted position, a roller journaled wholly upon the plate, and a cutting knife secured to the frame with its cutting edge in proximity to the periphery of the roller.
3. A paring device comprising a frame, a cutting blade secured to the frame, a roller supporting plate disposed at an obtuse angle to the blade adjustable toward and from the cutting edge of the blade, a roller ournaled wholly upon the plate and means for holding the roller in its adjusted position.
4. In a paring device a supporting frame, a cutting blade mounted on the frame, a roller support-ing plate slidably mounted on the frame and disposed at an obtuse angle to the cutter blade, a roller mounted on the plate, means for adjusting said plate and roller toward and from the cutting edge of the blade.
5. A paring device comprising an upright supporting rod, a frame secured to the rod and extending downwardly and laterally at an angle thereto, a cutting blade secured to the frame in a plane substantially parallel to the rod, a roller supporting plate slidably mounted upon the frame, a roller supported wholly by and upon the plate, and means for adjusting the plate and roller toward and from the cutting edge of the blade.
6. In a paring device a supporting frame, a cutting blade and a. roller supporting plate both mounted upon the frame and adjustable toward and from each other in intersecting planes, and a roller supported wholly by and upon the plate and having its periphery in close proximity to the cutting edge of t-he blade.
7. In a paring device a supporting frame having a lengthwise slot, a roller support-.ing plate slidable upon the frame and having a lug projected through said slot, an adjusting screw engaging said lug for adjusting the plate, a roller mounted on the plate, and a cutting blade mounted on the frame and having its cutting edge in close proximity to the periphery of the roller.
