UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FREDERICK M. BENNETT, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE- HALF TO SAMUEL HENRY TACY, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
SCISSORS-SHARPENER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed November 14, 1907.
Patented Aug. 23, 1910.
Serial N o. 402,202.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK M. BEN- NETT, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a certain new and useful Scissors-Sharpener, of which the following is a complete specification, the same being a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an instrument adapted for sharpening edge tools, and more particularly to the class known as scissors Sharpeners, and it has for its object the construction of a composite article of manufacture, combining compactness of structure, light weight, and also increased efliciency in practical use.
To obtain the desired end, this my invention consists in the construction, arrang ment and operation of parts herein set forth.
In order to enable my invention to be fully understood, I will proceed to explain the same by reference to the drawing which accompanies and forms a part of the speciication, in which- Figure l represents a side elevation. Fig. 2 a transverse section on the line 2. 2. Fig. l. Fig. 3 a perspective view illustrating the method of application.
Like letters and numerals of reference indicate like parts in all the views.
Referring by reference characters to the drawing Fig. l, represents my improved scissors Sharpener constructed according to my invention, a. is a plate composed of metal or other suitable material provided with angular guides e, f, formed so as to stand respectively at an obtuse angle a hardened steel or agate projection b. is attached to the metal plate at g. by solder or other suitable means, a depression d. is adapted to hold a slab of abrasive material, perforations c. afford means for attaching to a key ring or suspending in any suitable manner.
The special feature of my invention is more clearly shown in transverse section Fig. 2, in which g. illustrates a groove to receive and hold a hardened steel or agate burnisher b. also a depression 0l. or recessed portion located in one face thereof to receive and hold a slab of abrasive material 7L.
The method of application is shown in Fig. 3.V as follows, the scissors le. is held rmly in the right hand in the usual manner, the plate a. is held between the thumb and index finger of the left hand, with the hardened steel or agate projection between the blades, and the angular guides e. f. adjacent toA and conforming with the angles of the upper and lower blades of the scissors, while in this position the Sharpener is drawn inward over the blades.
I have found in practice that one or two applications will produce a keen cutting edge. IVhen the edges are broken it will first be necessary to grind them in the usual way on the abrasive slab set in the handle of the Sharpener.
It is manifest that various omissions of some parts could be made without materially affecting the useful features of my invention, therefore I desire not to be restricted to the particular construction and arrangement of parts shown and described.
I do not claim as my invention .the use of steel burnisher for sharpening edge tools,
What I claim as my invention is.
In a sharpening device, a plate provided with a hardened steel or agate burnisher, said plate having adjacent angular edge guides formed so as to lie respectively at an obtuse angle and to project apart or flare at the intersection thereof, where the burnisher is located, and arranged coperatively with the burnisher, to engage one side only of the scissors, one guide being adapted to engage a wide face of one blade of the scissors, and the other guide being arranged to engage a narrow face of the other blade.
In testimony of the foregoing specification I do hereby sign the same in the city of Philadelphia county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania this thirteenth day of November 1907. i
` FREDERICK M. BENNETT.
