Be it known that we, JOHN W. BOUGHTON, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, and JOHN MILTON SNIDOW. a citizen of the United States, residing at Big Stony Creek, in the county of Giles, State of Virginia, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Combined Tool and Try- Square, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings.

Our invention consists of a file or other tool and a square, which are adjustably connected, as herein described, so that either part may be set in order to accomplish the work with precision.

Figure 1 represents a side elevation of a tool and square embodying our invention. Fig. 2 represents an end elevation thereof, partly sectional. Fig. 3 represents a partial side elevation and partial longitudinal section of a modification.

Referring to the drawings, A represents a file, which in Figs. 1 and 2 is firmly connected with the handle B, and O represents the bolster or sleeve which encircles the inner end of the handle, the several parts enumerated being well known in tools of the class. The sleeve 0 is secured to the handle B by a screw C; but this is not an essential feature. Connected with or continuous of the sleeve 3 5 O and projecting laterally therefrom are lugs or straps D, to which is secured the blade E, which with the file A constitutesa try-square. The blade is secured to the straps D by means of a pivot F, which passes through the inner end of the blade and has its ends fixed to the straps, it being seen that the blade may be moved so that the file may be set true to the work to be accomplished.

When the file is adjusted, the blade is clamped to the straps by means of a screw G, which is fitted to the straps and passes through a slot in the blade, serving to compress the blade and straps together, whereby the parts retain their adjusted position. In Fig. Swe show the tang of the file freely or pivotally inserted in the handle B, whereby it may be moved therein. Set-screws H are fitted to the handle and tighten against the tang of the file, whereby the latter is firmly connected with the handle. By loosening the screws the file may be moved, so that by means of the blade E said file may be set true to the work to be accomplished, after which the screws are tightened, and the parts retain their adjusted position. In this case the blade E is fixed to the sleeve 0. By these means we provide a combined file and try-square which is admirably adapted for the operation of filing or sharpening saws and other implements and tools with precision, avoiding the necessity of a distinct trysquare, it being evident that in lieu of the file we may employ any other suitable tool with which a square may be employed.

Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. A tool having a handle, a sleeve on said handle, a strap secured to said sleeve, a trysquare blade connected with said strap, and a set-screw for said blade, combined and operating substantially as described.

2. A combined try-square and file consisting of a file with a handle having a sleeve thereon, straps secured to said sleeve, a trysquare blade pivotally secured to said straps, and'a fastening-screw for securing said blade in position, said parts being combined substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

3. A tool having a tang freely inserted in a handle, adj listing-screws for said tang, working in said handle, and a try-square blade connected with said handle, said parts combined substantially as described.
