` UNITED4 STATES PATENT OFFICE muy# e. sNYnnn un CHARLES r. Montaner P HLAnELrHrn, Pianusnvama.
Specication of Letters Patent.' Patented Allg. 23, 1916. Application ined august so, isos. serial No. 515,302.
To all whom 'it'may concern:
Be it' known that we, FRANK G. SNYDER tand CHARLES P. MULLEN', citizens of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in
5 the county of YPhiladelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have Kinvented a new and useful Improvement Bobbins or Spools, -of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a bobbin or spool,
the object being to provide a bobbin or spool out of metal whereby the `life of the same will be greatly increased and at the same time the strength will be increased to such an extent that all danger of the bobbin becoming broken is prevented.
Another object of the invention is to provide a, spool or bobbin which is so constructedv that the same can be manufactured very cheaply.
Another object of thel invention is to provide a spool or bobbin in which the parts are so connected ,that they will be firmly held together so that all danger of the parts becoming accidentally detached is prevented. With these objects in view, the invention consists in the'novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter'fully described, pointed out in the claims and shown in the accompanying drawings, in which,
Figure l is a perspective view of our imroved bobbin or spool. Fig. 2 is a longitu- 'nal section through the same. In carryingout our improved invention we emdpliy a` body A whlch is preferably form'e o a tube having contracted portions yA which terminate in outwardly projecting -tubular ortions `A2 forming ybearings for the spin e upon which the bobbin or spool .40 is adapted to be placed. Arranged over the` tubular portionsI A2 of the body A are wooden plugs B which, 'are provided, with uare ends and concavp-convex inner ends a apted to lit snugly over the contracted portions A so-that the bearing portions will be reinforced in such a manner thatall danger of the same moving or yielding in any wai 1s prevented. Y rranged over the plugs-and bodyA is a v metal tube C whichis provided with flanged ends C" and annular crimped portionshC2 forming anges between which the edges of disks D D2 are adapted to fit, said disks forming end members D for the spool and are connected together at,their edges by bending the periphery edges annularly and crimping the same together as shown at D3. The space between the disks D', Dzis filled with a suitable' composition E for strengthening the same and it will be seen that by this arrangement the end members are secuiely heldin position on the tube C so that all danger of the saine, becoming detached is prevented. A
For securing the wooden plugs in the respective ends of the tube we lndent the tubes annularly as shown at C4 so that the indentations will be embedded in the plugs which vwill securely hold the same therein and said a tube arranged over said body having inlugs will prevent the body' A from moving 70 ibngitudinally Within the tube C.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that we have provided a spool or bobbin which is formed of metal with the exception of the Wooden plugs and said plugs are so covered by the parts of the spool that they are not subject to any wear.
What we claim is l. A spool or bobbin comprising a body rovided with contracted portions terminating in tubular bearing portions, plugs arranged over said tubular bearing portions, a tube arranged over said body provided with spaced flanges adjacent its ends and sectional end members arranged between said flanges.
2. A bobbin or spool comprising a body having contracted portions terminating in tubular bearing ortions, wooden plugs ar rangedx over saidp tubular bearing portions,
dentations embedded in said plugs adjacent its endsand provided with spaced flanges andend members formed of spaced disks secured together having the yspace between said disks filled with composition for reinforcing the same.
3. A metal spool or bobbin comprisingv al tubular body portion, having contracted end portions terminating in metal bearings', 100 wooden plugs arranged over said bearings provided with concavo-cnvex ends fittingl y v seams snugly against the contracted portions of crimped together and the space between said the body, a tube arranged over said body disksybeing filled with a composition.
and plugs having annular indentations FRANK4 G SNYDER.
formed adjacent its ends for securing the HAR plugs in position therein, said tube being C LES P7 M ULLEN provided with spaced anges adjacent its Witnesses: ends and disks surrounding said tubes be- GEORGE W. SMITH,
tween said flanges having their outer ends WILLIAM J. PAUL'.
