ROTARY BRUSH.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 727,256, dated May 5, 1903. Applioation filed May 14:, 1902- Serial No. 1071239- (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY R. ATWATER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Cleveland, county of Ouyahoga, and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Rotary Brushes, of which the following is a specification, the principle of ,the invention being herein explained and the description set forth in detail certain means embodying the invention, such disclosed means constituting but one of various'mechanical forms in which the principle of the invention may be used.
In said annexed drawings, Figure 1 represents a longitudinal cross-section of a brush constructed in accordance with myinvention. Fig. 2 represents an end elevation of the same, portions being broken away, as indicated, to disclose more fully its construction.
Referring to the parts by letters, A represents the body or hub of the brush, which is preferably made of cast-iron or similar material and substantially cylindrical in form. It is provided, as indicated, with a central boss or sleeve a, to which it is integrally connected by suitable webs a. This boss-a is provided with a suitable bore a which adapts the brush to be mounted upon a mandrel or spindle. The hub A, preferably at its ends, is provided with radial flanges as, which project inwardly, as indicated, at a whereby they form annular channels or-recesses B, extending continuously around the hub. At one point, however, there is provided a removable section O, which extends longitudinally of the hub and which is received by a and receive screws D, which are secured in the webs of the hub for retaining the section in place.
The outer or bristle portion of the brush is formed of removable sections E, the bristles e whereof are preferably of wire and fastened tova base F, which is formed, preferably, of stout twisted Wires f As indicated, the bristles are caught between the strands f of the wire. The extremities f f of the backs project beyond the bristles e and are adapted to be receivedby the annular recesses B. The section 0 having been first removed, these sections E are introduced into the recesses just above the groove a passed around the brush one after the other, and placed parallel with the hub-axis, this operation being continued until a complete and compact brush is formed or built .up, as it were, in this manner. After the last section necessary to complete the brush has been attached in this way a brush-section is placed in the section 0 and the latter replaced and secured by means of the screws D, as stated. In this manner a very simple but durable. brush is produced, and such a construction as this is most advantageous where certain of the abrading devices or sections wear out before others, for
they may be readily replaced by new ones, or p having a substantially cylindrical outer face, disposed longitudinally around said cylinsaid. face having a longitudinal recess, outdrical face, the extremities of said members 10 wardly-projectingfianges carried by said hub lying Within said annular recesses. and.forming annular recesses, a removable Signed by me this 10th day of May, 1902.
5 section lying within said longitudinal recess, HARRY R. ATWATER.
and having projecting portions registering Attest: with said flanges, and members constituting D. T. DAVIES, backs of brush-sections, said members being A. E. MERKEL.
