SPINNING-TOP.

To all whom it may concern.

Be it known that I, WILI-IELM HOLLEN- DUNG, a citizen of Germany, residing at Miinchen-Gladbach, Germany, have invented new and useful Improvements in "Spinning-Tops, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to a spinning top adapted to be rotated and maintained in rotation in a novel manner, so as to aflord an exhilarating and entertaining game.

In the accompanying drawing: Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved top, showing the spinning string twisted; Fig. 2 a similar view with the string untwisted; Fig. 3 a side view of the top detached, and Fig. l a plan thereof.

A spinning top (Z, of conventional c011- struction is provided at its apex with a hook composed of a comparatively long axial shank a, and a straight beak at, extending laterally from said shank. The upper side of top d, is divided into preferably seven panels or fields e, that converge toward the apex. These panels bear the successive colors of the spectrum as conventionally indicated in Fig. 4 so that when the top is rotated, its upper half will appear white and will strongly contrast with the color of the hook, which is preferably dark. Furthermore, by coloring the top as described, it is not apt to become quickly soiled during use.

In order to spin the top there is employed a string 6, to each end of which is attached a handle 0. These handles are grasped by the player, so that string 6, forms a downwardly extending loop in front of the player. now moving the sticks away from each other, the string will become untwisted and thereby impart an impetus to the top, which will become unhooked and rotate on the floor. During such rotation the top is recaught by the string to retwist the latter by its momentum, and by again manipulating the sticks, an additional impetus will be imparted to the top which permits it to spin anew after becoming unhooked from the string. In this way the spinning of the top may be continued for an indefinite period of time, thus inviting the exercise of skill and affording an exhilarating entertainment for the player.

If desired two or more. players may par ticipate in the game.

I claim:

1. A spinning top provided with a hook including a shank disposed axially of the top and a substantially straight beak which eX- tends at substantially a right angle to said shank, combined with a string adapted to freely engage the hook and have unrestricted disengagement therefrom during rotation of the top, whether the top be rotating on a base or in the air under the influence of the string.

2. A spinning top provided with a hook including a shank and a substantially straight beak, the beak being disposed at substantially a right angle to the shank, combined with a string to freely engage the hook and to have unrestricted dlsengagement therefrom during rotation of the top, and handles secured to the ends of the string.
