- My invention relates to an improved construction of a guard or deflector for side ejection shoulder fire arms, wherein the spent shells are ejected through an ejection opening formed in one side of the frame of the arm, the object being to provide a guard or deflector having a pocket to control the direction of the discharge of the gases of ex plosion and any residue of fulminate and powder blown back through the ejector opening, provision being made, not only for merely deflecting a spent shell downwardly as the same is ejected from the ejection opening, but means being also provided by reason of my novel construction of guard for deflecting the gases of explosion and the flying particles of powder and fulminate residue downwardly, so that there is no liability of the same reaching the face or eyes of the user.

GUARD OR DEFLECTOR FOR SIDE-EJECTION SHOULDER-FIREARMS.
To all whom it may concern: 1
Be it known that I, HENRY B. FEBIGER, a l citizen of the United States, residing at the city of New Orleans, parish of Orleans, State of Louisiana, have invented a new and useful Guard or Deflector for Side- Ejection Shoulder-Firearms, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improved construction of a guard or deflector for side ejection shoulder fire arms, wherein the spent shells are ejected through an ejection opening formed in one side of the frame of the arm, the object being to provide a guard or deflector having a pocket to control the direction of the discharge of the gases of ex plosion and any residue of fulminate and powder blown back through the ejector opening, provision being made, not only for merely deflecting a spent shell downwardly as the same is ejected from the ejection opening, but means being also provided by reason of my novel construction of guard for deflecting the gases of explosion and the flying particles of powder and fulminate residue downwardly, so that there is no liability of the same reaching the face or eyes of the user.
It further consists of other novel details of construction, all as will be hereinafter fully set forth.
For the purpose of illustrating my invention, I have shown in the accompanying drawings one form thereof which is at present preferred by me, since the same has been found in practice to give satisfactory and reliable results, although it is to be understood that the various instrumentalities of which my invention consists can be variously arranged and organized and that my invention is not limited to the precise arrangement and organization of these instrumentalities as herein shown and described.
Figure 1 represents a perspective view of my novel guard or deflector showing also a portion of a fire arm having my novel device applied thereto. Fig. 2 represents a plan View of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 represents a perspective view of my guard detached. Fig. 4 represents an end view of the same. Fig. 5 represents a perspective view, showing the Specification of Letters Patent.

Referring to the drawings :1 designates the receiver or frame of the fire arm, which is of any desired construction and has a barrel 2 projecting therefrom, action slide 3, therefor, the slide handle 4, and the ejector opening 5.
It will of course be understood that while all the necessary adjuncts for a fire arm are understood to be employed, 1 have not shown the same for the sake of clearness of illustration, since the present invention, per 86, relates to my novel construction of guard or deflector and its means for attachment to the receiver of the fire arm. Adjacent the ejector opening 5 and projecting outwardly from the receiver or frame, I place the guard or deflector 6, which can be of any suitable form or material but which in my preferred construction is provided with a lateral extension 7, a rearwardly downwardly extending member 8 and an outwardly flaring side wall or cover 9, which extends from the top or lateral portion 7 to the rear wall 8, whereby a well defined pocket 10 is formed, said pocket having a downwardly deflected, outwardly flaring top wall, whereby not only the spent shell is ejected laterally and downwardly but in addition the gases or residue of explosion and any particles of powder or fulminato are expelled not only laterally but downwardly away from the fire arm and in a direction directly away from the face of the user.
11 and 12 designate lugs or spring catches located respectively at the front and rear of the guard or deflector which are adapted to be sprung into the ejector opening 5, preferably into engagement with the end walls thereof and be readily retained in position therein. It will thus be seen that as the gases or residue of the explosion discharge from the ejector opening 5, they are preventedfrom passing rearwardly toward the face of the operator, but will in the present instance contact with the pocket 10 of the guard or deflector and therefore, be thrown outwardly, downwardly and forwardly and difl'used in such a manner that they will in no way interfere with the hand,
vision, eyes or face of the user. It will thus be seen that with my novel construction I protect the hand, face and eyes of the user and in addition I provide a guard or protector which will prevent the empty shells as they are ejected from being thrown in an improper manner, but will cause them to be thrown downwardly or forwardly away from the user and in addition by reason of the outwardly flaring top wall of my novel device, the gases and the residue of each explosion will be also forced outwardly and downwardly so that they will under no circumstances reach the face of the user.
' My present invention is designed as an improvement upon the prior device heretofore patented by me, No. 9%,210, January 11, 1910, wherein I have shown the guard or defiector, as consisting of a top member having a rearward extension projecting downwardly at the rear of the ejector opening. This device has been found in practice by me to give satisfactory and reliable results, but my present invention possesses additional advantageous features, since by the employment of the outwardly flaring wall, which forms the top of the pocket 10, I am enabled not only to cause the spent shells to be discharged laterally and downwardly, but in addition, I provide means for causing the gases of the explosion and the flying particles of powder, fulminate and residue after being received in the pocket 10 to be downwardly and forwardly ejected from said pocket in a direction away from the face of the user, the advantage of which will be evident to those skilled in the art.
I am aware that it has been heretofore proposed in the patent to Johnson No. 804,661, granted November 14:, 1905, to employ a leaf like fender or abutment adapted to be detachably applied to a gun frame adj acent to the rear end of the ejection opening thereof, said leaf like fender being held in position upon the gun frame by a pair of depending legs or by a pintle or the like. My present invention, however is clearly difl'erentiated from said leaf like fender since I employ in lieu thereof, a different construction of guard, whereby a pocket is formed having a top 7 and an outwardly and downwardly flaring curved cover portion, whereby the shells and gases of explosion are not only prevented from being deflected rearwardly but are deflected laterally and outwardly from the ejection opening by reason of the curved outwardly flaring wall 9 of the pocket 10 which I employ.
My present invention is therefore clearly distinguished from both of the above mentioned devices, not only in its contour and construction, but in the advantageous result obtained, since by constructing and locating the pocket 10 in the manner and position described, I obtain a new and useful result, and to none of the constructions of the prior art do I herein make my claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. As a new article of manufacture, a de tachable guard for side ejection shoulder fire arms, said guard comprising a pocket adapted to be applied to the gun frame of such an arm, said pocket having a top, and a side cover extended downwardly and flaring downwardly and outwardly, whereby the gases and residue of the explosion are deflected laterally, downwardly, outwardly, and forwardly from the arm.
2. The combination with the frame of a fire arm having an ejector opening, of a detachable guard therefor, said guard comprising a pocket adapted to be applied to said gun frame, said pocket having a top and a side cover extended downwardly and flaring downwardly and outwardly, whereby the gases and residue of the explosion are deflected laterally, downwardly, outwardly and forwardly from the arm in combination with lugs on said guard pro jecting outwardly therefrom and adapted to engage and interlock with the end walls of said .ej ector opening.
