GUARD R DEFLECTOR FOR FIREARIVIS.
Specification of Letters '.Patent.
Iatentcd Jan. if, i916.
Application filed October 15. 1909.' Serial No. 522.745.
lTo all whom 'it may concern:
receptacle adjacent the ejector opening of the fire arm to prevent the products of combustion from reaching the face` of theoperator or user.
It further consists of the novel features .of construction, all as 'will be hereinafter fully set forth.
Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a portion of a tire arm, showing my invention applied thereto. Fig. 2 represents a side elevation if the parts shown in Fig. 1.
CIL.
. Fig. 3 represents a sectional view on line @1 -a2, Fig. 2, with the interior mechanism and one side of the receiver' or frame re moved. Fig. 4 represents a sectional View of a portion of a re arm showing the guard or deiector curved.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in the figures.
Referring to the drawings -in the use of fire arms, wherein an ejector opening` is employed, I have found that part of the 'prod- -ucts of combustion are discharged. rearwardly through the ejector opening, caused by the expansion of the gases, etc. and are partially directed into t-he face of the user. This is objectionable for many reasons, as will be evident. My invention is designed to overcome this defectand to partially control the direction of the discharge of the empty case. In the drawings I have shown an embodiment thereof which I have found operates successfully in practice but itz will be evident that the arrangement of the parts may be varied and other instrumentalities may be employed and I do not therefore de sire to be limited in every instance to the exacty form as herein shown and described but desire to make such changes as will come within the scope ofmy invention and as may be necessary. A
1 designates the rcceiveror frame of av fire arm, which is of any desired construction, and having a barrel 2 projecting there-v from. action slide 3 therefor', the slide handle 4 and the ejector opening 5.
It will of coluse be understood that all 6o the necessary parts for a fire arm are em ployed and l have not shown the same for the sake of clearness.
Adjacent the ejector opening projectin g outwardly from the recelver or frame 1, I place a guard or deflector .6,- which can be of any suitable forni and length and which preferably extends downwardly forniing a rearward extension 7, to a point preferably beneath the plane of the ejector o ein ing 5, said extension 7 forming a part o my detlector or guard and being preferably slightly curved as shown more olea ly in Fig. 2. It will thus be seen that s the products of combustion or parts thereof 76 which discharge through the ejector opening 5 and would otherwise pass rearwardly to the face of the operator, will in the present. instance contact with the guard or de flector and are thrown downwardly and for- 80 wardly or will be diffused in suoli a manner that they will not interfere with the user. It. will be seen that, in this manner, I protect the face of the user and in addition I provide a guard or detlector which wili pre- 55 vent the empty shells, as they are ejected, from being thrown in an improper manner and will causel them to be thrown down wardly or forwardly away from --t'he user, the effect of which is evident.
Having thus described my invention, wha I claim as new and desire to secure by Let ters Patent, is: l
1. In a fire arm, a f
'aine having an ejector opening, and a` guard or detiector eXtt-n1d-.95Y
ing a suitable distance along the top of said opening and extending downwardiy at thc 'rear of said opening.
` In a fire arm, a frame, having an ejector opening, a guard o r deilector extending adjacent the top of said opening, and having a downward extension below the plane of 'said opening,.the body of said extension being .suitably curved.
3. In a fire arm, a framehaving an ejec- 105.
tor opening, a downwardly curved guartA `)r deiiect'or extending adjacent the top of said opening. 4. In a nig,
fire arm, having an ejector giona curved guard or detlector extent ino 111- adjacent the top of 4said opening2 and havextending below the plane of the Sme, andA ing an extension at the rear of sald opening the body of. said extension being suitably below the same. curved. f 5.
