To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, IRA C. BUoKMINsTnR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Beverly, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain Improvements in Presses, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification,like reference characters on the drawings indicating like parts in the several figures.
This invention relates to presses in which the presser members are relatively movable into different operative relations to each other, and particularly to presses of the type employed to cut out thin sheet material such as upper leather for boots or shoes.
Presses of the type just referred to are advantageously constructed with presser members having diiferent pressure surface areas, and in a preferred construction a movable presser member having a pressure surface area considerably less than that of the opposed stock supporting bed is movable over said bed to bring it into operative relation to a die wherever located upon the stock supported upon the bed. The movement of the presser member over the bed is preferably provided for by arranging the member so that it swings about a vertical axis at one side of the bed, and is usually effected by hand.
In order that the machine may have as great capacity as .possible it is desirable that the pressing opera-tion take place immedi.- ately after the presser member comes into operative position, and provision has been made in known machines for this succession of operations. It is found, however, in practice that if the pressing operation takes place before the movement by which the presser member has been brought into operative-position has entirely ceased the die will be struck a glancing blow, and it is therefore desirable to prevent such operation of the machine and to insure that when the presser member strikes the die it shall be moving in a direction substantially normal to the surface of the bed.
An object of the invention is the provision of improved means for bringing about the desired results above referred to which can readily be embodied in a machine of the type disclosed in United States Letters Patent to Arthur Bates, No. 921,503, granted be eicient in operation, which will operate at the most advantageous time in the cycle of the operations of the machine, and which is so constructed and arranged that it will not interfere with the adjustment of the presser members to compensate for wear of one or both of them, and will be equally efficient in operation in all positions of adjustment. v
With the foregoing and other objects in view the invention is shown as embodied in a machine of the type disclosed in the Letters Patent above identified, which machine is known to the trade as the Clicking machine.
In its illustrated preferred embodiment, the invention comprises braking means, preferably of the expanding ring type, arranged to travel with the vertically reciprocating post or plunger during its vertical movements and controlled in its operation by means associated with or constituting a part of the starting means through which the relative pressing movement of the presser member and bed is controlled.
The operation of the brake is preferably so timed that the brake will be normally inoperative, thereby permitting the presser member to be swung freely over the stock supporting bed, but will be rendered operative before the pressing operation begins. To this end the brake is preferably so constructed and arranged that it is maintained normally in its inoperative condition by the starting means against a yielding tendency toward movement into its operative condition. A convenient embodiment of this feature of the invention comprises means operated by the starting lever or clutch tripping lever as it returns to its normal position for rendering the braking means inoperative against the tension of the yielding means which serves to render the braking means again operative as the starting lever is depressed to actuate the clutch when it lis desired to perform a pressing operation.
Other objects and features of the invention will be apparent from a consideration p of the following description of a preferred embodiment of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings,-I*`1gure 1 is a side elevation of the commercial Clicking machine having embodied therein the invention of this application; Fig. 2 is a detail perspective partly in section of the braking mechanism and the associated parts of the machine; Fig. 3 is a vertical section through the brake members showing especially the means for actuating the brake; and Fig. 4 is a sectional detail showing the construction of the means for expanding the split ring which constitutes an element of the brake mechanism.
The presser member 2 carried upon the post or plunger 4 which is mounted in bear ings 6 and 8 at one side of the stock supporting bed or block 10 in such manner that it may reciprocate vertically and also oscillate about its vertical axis; the frame 12 in which the bearings 6 and 8 are formed; the driving shaft 14; and the loose pulley 16 arranged to be clutched to the shaft 14 by suitable clutch mechanism actuated through a rod 18 connected to the rear end of the v. lever 2O pivoted in the frame 12 at 22 and having between its pivot 22 and the handle 24 at the end of its forward arm a swivel comprising members 26 and 28, the member 26 being arranged to turn upon the member 28 about an axis corresponding to the vertical axis of the post, these as well as some other parts herein shown but not described ma all be of usual construction, and specifically do not form features of the present invention.
The brake mechanism herein illustrated is of the expanding ring type and is preferably connected to the post- 4 to reciprocate vertically therewith, the stationary brake member 30 to which the expanding ring 32 is connected being held against oscillation with the post 4 by the engagement of ears l 34 upon said brake member with guide posts 36 boltedto lateral extensions 38 of the frame of the machine adjacent to the bearing 8 of the post 4, the ears 34 being provided with openings through which the guide posts 36 pass. -The connection between the expanding ring 32 and the member 30 comprises a lug 40 upon the member 30 which enters a notch 42 in the ring 32.
The movable brake member 44 comprises a sleeve surrounding the post or plunger 4 inside the stationary brake member 30, the movable member 44 having a downwardly projecting flange 46 surrounding the expanding ring 32 and into engagement with which the ring 32 is arranged to be expanded. The member 44 is connected to the post 4 to reciprocate vertically therewith as well as to oscillate therewith.
In order that the whole brake mechanism may be carried with the post in both directions, the stationary brake member 3() is confined upon the movable member 44 for vertical reciprocation therewith by a collar 48 threaded upon the lower end of the sleeve portion of the member 44 below the member 30. The ring 32 is so constructed that it is normally contracted out of engagement with the fiange 46 under the action of its own elasticity. The means for expanding the.
ring into engagement with the flange 46 comprises a screw threaded thrust pin 50 threaded at one end into a transverse cylindrical block 52 carried in the ring 32 upon one side of the split therein and having a conical bearing in the ring upon the other side of the split, the conical bearing socket being formed in a screw threaded block 54 threaded into the ring to provide for initial adjustment of the ring with respect to the flange 46. Connected to the thrust pin 50 is an arm 56 by which it may be turned, said arm being pressed normally in a direction to cause the ring to expand into engagement with the fiange 46 by a spring 58 bearing at one end against the arm and socketed Lat its other end in the stationary brake member 30. A horizontal plunger 60 vpivotally connected at one eno to the lower end of the arm 56 and guided in an opening in a depending lug 62 upon the member 30 is arranged to be engaged by a finger 64 preferably formed integral withA the part 28 of the swivel in the lever 20, said finger having an extended plunger engaging surface 66 whereby vertical adjustment of the post 4 and presser member 2 in the usual manner by the hand wheel 68 is provided for. It will be noted that the finger 64 is carried by that part of the swivel in the lever 20 that does not turn with the presser member 2.
The lever 20 is maintained with its forward end normally in its uppermost position by a spring 70 connected at one end to the lever upon the rear side of the pivot 22 and at its other end to the frame 12. The finger will therefore be held normally in its rearmost position with its plunger' engaging surface 66 in engagement with the plunger 60, and the arm 56 will therefore be held in such position that the ring 32 is permitted to contract out of engagement with the flange 46 upon the movable brake member 44,'whereby the presser member 2 will be free to be swung over the bed 10 by the operator. lVhen, however, the presser member 2 has come into operative position over the die 72, which has been placed in a selected location on the stock 7 4 and the handle 24 is depressed by the operator to actuate the clutch by which the pulley 16 is connected to the shaft 14 to effect the pressing operation, the finger 64 will be moved toward the right in Fig. 1, thereby releasing the plunger 60 and allowing the arm 56 to be moved to the right in Fig. 3 by the spring 58, thus causing the ring 32 to be expanded into engagement with the fiange 46 upon the brake member 44, whereby further lateral movenient of the presser member 2 is prevented before the movement of said member toward the cutting bed begins.
Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:-
l. A machine of the class described, having, in combination, a bed, a presser member laterally movable over said bed into dierent operative relations thereto and movable toward and away from said bed to effect a pressing` operation, braking means for preventing the lateral movement of the presser member, said braking means being normally inoperative, and means for rendering said braking means operative before the movement of said presser member toward the bed.
2. A machine of the class described, having, in combination, a bed, a die freely movable over said bed, a presser member movable over the bed into operative position above the die wherever located on the bed and movable toward and away from the bed to force the die through stock supported on the bed, braking means for prevent-ing lateral movement of the presser member, said braking means being normally inoperative, and means for rendering said braking means operative before the movement of the presser member toward the bed.
3. A machine of the class described, having, in combination, presser members relatively movable into different operative relations to each other and movable toward and away from each other to effect a pressing operation, starting means for controlling the relative pressing movement of the presser members, and means maintained normally in inoperative condition by the starting means for checking the relative movement by which the presser members have been brought into a selected operative relation to each other before the relative pressing movement begins.

A machine of the class described, having, in combination, a bed, a presser member movable over the bed, a post to which one end of said presser member is attached mounted in bearings at one side of the bed to reciprocate vertically and to oscillate with the presser member as it moves over the bed, mechanism for effecting the vertical reciprocation of said post and presser member, means for controlling the actuation of said mechanism, and braking means carried by said post and rendered operative by the actuating movement of said controlling means for stopping' the oscillatory movement of the post in advance of its reciprocating movement.

A machine of the class described, having, in combination, a bed, a presser member movable over the bed into and out of different operative relations thereto, mechanism for moving said presser member toward and away from the bed to effect the pressing operation, starting means for controlling the actuation of said mechanism maintained normally in inoperative position, and braking means for checking the movement of the presser member over the bed maintained normally in inoperative condition by the startingmeans and constructed and arranged to become operative as the starting means moves from inoperative position into operative position.

A machine of the class described, having, in combination, a bed, a presser member laterally movable over the bed into and out of different operative relations thereto, mechanism for moving said member toward and away from said bed to effect the pressing operation, braking means for checking the lateral movement of the presser member, yielding means tending to render said braking means operative, and starting means for controlling the operation of the presser member moving mechanism constructed to render said yielding means normally inoperative.

A machine of the class described, having, in combination, a bed, a presser member movable over said bed into and out of different operative relations thereto and movable toward and away from said bed to effect a pressing operation, means for controlling the pressing operation and spring-pressed means maintained normally in inoperative condition and released during the operative movement of the controlling means for checking the movement of the presser member over the bed before its movement toward the bed begins.

A machine of the class described, having, in combination, a bed, a die movable over the bed, a presser member movable from a position at one side of the die into operative position over the die Wherever located on the bed, a vertically reciprocating post by which the presser member is carried and With Which it is arranged to oscillate about the vertical axis of said post, means for adjusting the post and presser member vertically, normally inoperative braking` means for checking the oscillating movement of the post and presser member, and means under the control of the operator extending along the path of vertical adjustment of said post for rendering said braking means operative.

A machine of the class described, having, in combination, a bed, a presser member movable over the bed into and out of different operative relations thereto, a vertically reciprocating post to which the presser member is attached mounted in bearings at one side of the bed to oscillate With the presser member about the vertical axis of said post, mechanism for eecting the reciprocation of said post and presser member, means for controlling the actuation of said mechanism comprising a lever yieldingly maintained normally in inoperative position, braking means for checking` the oscillation of said post, and means carried by said lever and engaging a portion of said braking means when said lever is in inoperative position for rendering said braking means inoperative.

A machine of the class described, having, in combination, a bed, a presser member movable over the bed into and out of different operative relations thereto and movable toward and away from the bed to effect a pressing operation, braking means movable with the presser member in its movement toward and away from the bed but having a part constrained from movement with the presser member over the bed, and independent means under the control of the operator and extending along the path of vertical movementJ of the braking means for rendering said means operative to check the movement of the presser member over the bed.
18. A machine of the class described, having, in combination, a bed, a presser member movable over the bed into and out of different operative relations thereto, mechanism for moving said presser member toward and away from the bed to effect a pressing operation, controlling means for said mechanism comprising a clutch and a clutch actuating device, and braking means for checking the movement of the presser member over the bed rendered operative by the clutch actuating movement of the clutch actuating device.

A machine of the class described, having, in combination, a bed, a presser member movable over the bed into and out of different operative relations thereto, mechanism for moving said member toward and aivay from the bed to effect a pressing operation, normally inoperative braking means for checking the movement of the presser member over the bed, and means movable with the presser member constructed and arranged to eect, at any angular position of the presser member, by a single movement in one direction, the actuation of the braking means to check the further movement of the presser member over the bed and the actuation of the mechanism for moving the presser member toward and away from the bed.
