Be it known that I, EDWARD S.- MowRY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Middletown, in the county of Middlesex and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Flagstafi's, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in fiagstaifs, and has for its object, among other things, to provide a collapsible device of this character which will occupy the minimum amount of space when not in use, and which can be constructed at a small cost.
To these, and other ends, my invention consists in the fiagstaff having certain details of construction and combinations of parts, as will be hereinafter described, and more particularly pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the drawings, in which like numerals of reference designate like parts in the several figures; Figure l is a side elevation of my improved device partly in section; and Fig. 2 is an enlarged elevation of the clamping disk.
The present type of flagstaff is continually becoming more and more expensive to make as wood of the required grain is increasingly more difficult to obtain. The length of the staff also makes it inconvenient to transport and when not in use it is cumbersome and stowed away with much difficulty owing to its great length. These, and other objections, are overcome in my device by making the flagstaff of several metallic sections which fit telescopically within each other.
In the practice of my invention I provide a flag bracket 1 of any desired form having a tubular section 2 secured thereto, preferably to a shank 3 on one of the members of the bracket. Slidable within the section 2 is a section 4, and movable therein is a section 5. Fixed in section 5 is a tip 6, shown herein as being rounded, but may be of any other preferred construction, and to which is secured a pulley 7 by means of the eye 8. The sect-ions are held against movement in their outer positions by a clamping disk 9, that is provided with a screw 11 that is threaded therethrough, with its head within a notch 10.
In the inner end of the sections 4 and 5 are the clamping disks 9 that are of substantially the same diameter as the inside diameter of said sections, and have a screw 11 threaded therethrough with the head thereof within the peripheral notch 10. In each of the sections is a hole 12 which register with each other when the sections are in their extended positions and through which a screw driver is projected to rotate the screw 11. The pressure exerted by thesaid screw and disk within the section expands slightly the end of said section, which is thereby frictionally held against movement within the outer section.
In each of the sections opposite the notch 10 are holes 12 through which a screw driver is inserted for engagement with the head of the screw 11.
Fixed to the section 2 adjacent to the bracket 1 is a cleat 13 of any desired or preferred construction, to which the flag rope is secured in a well known manner.
There are minor changes and alterations that can be made within my invention, and I would therefore have it understood that I do not limit myself to the exact construction herein shown and described, but claim all that falls fairly within the spirit and scope of my invention as defined by the appended claims.
Having described my invention, what 1 claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is 2- 1. In combination, a telescopic pole composed of two or more sections; and expansive means for frictionally holding the inner section within the outer section when in' a predetermined position.
2. In combination, a pole comprising telescopic sections; means within the inner section for expanding the same against the outer section, whereby movement of one of said sections within the other is prevented.
3. In combination, a pole comprising telescopic sections; and an expanding member within the inner of said sections for expanding the same against the outer section, whereby movement of one of said sections within the other is prevented, said sections and expanding member being so arranged that said expanding member may be operated from the exterior of said sections.
a. In combination, a pole comprising telescopic sections; means for frictionally holding said sections in cooperative relation with each other, said means comprising a disk Within one end of said sections, and a rotatable member threaded therein.
