FEED-WATER HEATER FOR BOILERS.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, VVILLARD C. BARNES, a citizen of the United States, residing in South Weymouth, in the county of Norfolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Feed-Water Heaters for Boilers, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like letters on the drawings representing like parts.
This invention relates to a feed-water heating system for boilers, and has for its object to provide a simple and eiiicient system with which the feed water may be heat ed by waste heats from the fire box, and with which a circulation of water may be established through the feed water heater and the boiler when the supply of cold water to the heater is cut olf.
The feed water heater may and preferably will be of a novel construction as will be described, to afford protection to and offer a support for the masonry at the rear of the boiler.
These and other features of this invention will be pointed out in the claims at the end of this specification.
Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal section and elevation of a boiler provided with a feed Water system embodying this invention. Fig. 2, a plan view of the boiler and feed water heater shown in Fig. 1, with the setting in section, and Fig. 3, a vertical transverse section on the line 3 3, Fig. 1, looking toward the right.
Referring to the drawings, a; represents a re tube boiler of any suitable or usual type, which is supported by and located in a setting b of masonry of any suitable construction and provided at its front end with the usual fire box c, grate bars d, ash-pit e, and bridge wall f, and having at its rear end a chamber g formed by the rear end of the boiler and the top and rear walls L, z', of the setting.
The chamber g in accordance with this invention, has located in it a feed water heater, preferably made as herein shown and consisting of two enlarged substantially parallel pipes or headers 10, 12, of steel or other suitable metal, which lare joined by a plurality of substantially arch-shaped pipes or tubes 13.

The outlet pipe 16 is located at the front of the boiler and is connected with the header 10 by a pipe 17 extended alongside of the boiler and formino` the water inlet pipe for the feed water heater. The pipe 17 `is also connected at its front end by a pipe -19 with the front end of the boiler near the bottomof the same.
rlhe header 12 is connected by a pipe 20 `with the rear end of the boiler .substantially near the middle of the same and above the level of the point of connection of the pipe 19 with the front of the boiler.
The outlet pipe 16 for the pump is provided with a valve 21, by means of which `the supply of cold water by the pump may be cut off or interrupted when the boiler has been supplied with water to the desired or required level. p
In operation with the apparatus as thus far described, the valve 21 is opened when the water in the boiler falls below a predetermined level and cold water is forced by the pump through the pipes 16, 17 into the header 10, from which it passes through the pipes 13 to the header 12, and thence through the pipe 2() into the boiler. The water in it-s passage through the heater lo- `:cated in the chamber g is subjected to the Ewaste heats from theiire box and is highly heated by said waste heats, suflicient temperature to raise the water `to near the boiling point, and in some inwhich are of stances are suicient to convert the feed waterinto steam.
It will be observed that the feed water heater is located in the upper part of the chamber g and in the hottest part of the same, and that the said chamber is substantially filled by the heater, so that the latter is constantly exposed to and practically enveloped by a body of waste gases, which are checked or dammed up in said chamber on their passage into the re tubes of the boiler, thereby affording opportunity for the water in the heater in said chamber to eor abstract a maximum. heat from, said gases, with corresponding efficiency in heating the feed Water.

In. practice the heater will preferably be connected` with the cold water supply as described, but it is not desired to limit the in-v ventionl in` this respect, as this connection may be omitted, and the heater connected with the boiler for the circulation of water as described.
The pipe 19 is provided with a check valve 34 of any suitable construction for preventing the Coldwater passing into the boiler through the pipe 19 and for permitting the water from the boiler to ow through the pipe 19 to the` heater when the cold Water supply is cut off.
It will be observed4 that the pipe 1.7 which supplies the cooler water to t-he heater, is connected with the front of the boiler throughs the pipe 1j9 near the bottom of said boiler, and is extended rearwardly within the setting and is connected with the heater above the level of the bottom of the boiler.

As a result,` a most efficient apparatus is obtained', for the reason, that a most effective .circulation of the water is obtained when the cold water supply is shut off,because the .cooler water taken. from the boiler at its i front end is exposed to heat and to a subst-antially progressiveheat from the point g wherev it leaves the boiler tothe point where it again enters the boiler. Furthermore, it g will be noticed that the pipe 1'( is connected with the heater above the level of the bottom of the boiler, with the result that the circulation is. effectively maintained by thev heat alone and the flow 0f' water is pract-eally continuously upward from the; front to the rear of the boiler.`

The combination with a boiler setting and a boiler supported thereby to form a chamber' between the rear end of the boiler and the rear and top walls of the setting, of a feed water heater located in said chamber and connected within the setting with the boiler for the circulation of cold water therethrough, and with a supply for cold water, a valve controlling the supply for cold water, a drainage pipe for said boiler` extended through the rear wall 'of the setting, and a drainage pipe for the feed wat-er heater extended through the rear wall of the setting and connected with the drainage pipe for the boiler outside of the said rear wall, substantially as described.

The combination with a boiler setting and a boiler supported thereby to form a chamber between the rear end of the boiler and the rear and top walls of the setting, of a feed water heater located in said chamber, and pipes connecting the boiler near the bottoni thereof with the heater above the level of the bottom of the boiler to obtain a substantially progressive upward HOW 0f water from the point where it leaves the boiler to the point where it enters the boiler, substantially as described.

The combination with a boiler setting and a boiler supported thereby to form a chamber between the rear, end of the boiler and the rear and top walls of the setting, of a feed water heater located in said chamber, and pipes located wi-thin the setting and connected with the boiler near its front end and with said heater above the level of the bottom of the boiler for the circulation of cold water therethrough, substantially as described.
6.4 The combination with a boiler setting and a boiler supported thereby to form a chamber between the rear end of the boiler and the rear and top walls of the setting, of a feed water heater located in said chamber, and pipes connecting the boiler near the bottom thereof with the heater above the level of the bottoni of the boiler to obtain a substantially progressive upward flow of water from the point where it leaves the boiler to the point where it en-ters the boiler, a blow-off pipe for said boiler independent o-f the circulating system which includes the boiler and heater, substantially as described.
