SAFETY-M2 JBr-BLADE-SHARPENING DEVICE.
.used again and again after sharpening the same.
A further object is to provide a device of this character which is extremely s mple in construction, cheap to manufacture, which may be easily manipulated by anyone of average intelligence to quickly sharpen the blade, which is neat and attractive in appearance, and stron and durable in use.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction andcombinations and arrangements of parts, as will be more fully hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure l, is a reduced plan view illustrating my improvements. Fig. 2, is a plan view of my ioning mechanism. Fig. 3, is a view in longitudinal section of the same. Fig. 4,- is a view: in elevation of the right hand end of Fig. Fig. 5, is a view in section on the line 5, I), of Fig. Fig. {3, is a view in section on the line 6, 6, of Fig. 2. Fig. 7, is a view in end elevation of the left hand end of Fig. 2. Fig. 8, is a perspective View of the razor blade holder partly dismantled.
Fig. 9, is a perspective view of the separable section of the razor blade holder. Fig. 10, is a view of an ordinary safety razor blade, and Fig. 11, is a view of one of the sliding sleeves used on the razor blade holder.
My improved device comprises both a honing mechanism illustrated at 1, and a strop 2, which are connected by a bail 3. the strep being secured around the intermediate portion of the bail, and having, a perforation -l at one end, which may be caught over a hook or other suitable'device (not shown) so that. the strop may be held taut while the razor is being stropped thereon.
I Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Aug, 23. R910. Application filed April'23, 1910. Serial No. 557,178.
The honing mechanism 1 com rises two parallel stone holders 5, 5, and t iese stone lders are rigidly connected at one end by two cross bars 6, (3, so that they are maintained a uniform distance apart and in perfeet. parallelism. Each stone holder com prises a rectangular tubular easing disposed with their angu ar portidns adjacent. eachother. These stone holders have their inner adjacent walls cut away so as to exposetwo faces of the stones 7, which are securely held in the holder. While I refer to these parts 7 as stones I would have it understood that I am in nowise'limited to the particular material employed as any composition which is efiicacious as a honing medium, may be employed and the manner of assembling the stones in the holders may also be varied at will, except that the stones must be rigidly held so that they will have no longitudinal or lateral movement in the holders, and will be positioned with their edges adjacent each other. Each of these stone holders 5 at one end, is provided with an eye 8 in which the ends of bail 3 are positioned while the other ends of the holders have ornamental knobs 9 thereon.
Between the holders and rigidly secured in the bars (3. (i, is a guide sleeve lU through which my improved razor blade holder ll prrr' jet-ts, and i adaph-d to be reciprm-atedand intermittently oscillatmh The holder ll comprises a rod having a handheld 12 at one enthand itsotherend is cut out as shown at 13 and provided with a removable section 14 to fit this cut out portion. the rod having lugs 14*, which are adapted to project through the end openings 15 in the ordinarv safety razor blade l and then into recesses 17 in the removable section 1- so as to hold therazor blade against lateral as well as longitudinal movement.
18 and l!) representsleeves which are adapted to slide on the rod. and each of these sleeves is provided with slots 20 in opposite sides to receive the ends of the razor blade. and yet permit the sleeves to slide over the removable section 14, and securely hold the section 14 and the razor blade to the blade holder.
\Vhen the blade issecnred in the holder, the holder is entered from the open end of the honiu, mechanism and the handle end 12 is passed through the sleeve 10.
To hone the blade, the operator grasps the honing mechanism in one'hand, and with the other he reciprocates the blade'holder Y of the razor blade w-i upper and lower faces res a partial turn, the-cg ositc facs'oi the two- 'tinuously reciprocating it as longasiis':
pectivel contact with the stones will be acted upon by the stones,"and when the holder isgiven of the two razor blade edges, so that-by in termittently oscillating the holder and {10th.
necessarv to impair; the pro r cuttingLedg: to the blade, both edges of te bladewill nresented to the stones at both sides,so that both cuttin ed cs of the blade will behoned. When t a lads has been sufficiently honed, the holder is removed from the honing mechanism, and the blade stropped on the strop 2 in the usual vmanner, save that a he grasps the holder and manipulates the blade by means thereof so as to hone the several edges of the blade.
It; will thus be seen that with my improvements, the razor blades ma be quicklv positioned in the holder and hot honed and stroppcd, thus permitting the blades to be utilized over and over again after each sharpening operation. a
A great many slight changes might be made in the general form and arrangement of parts described without departing from my invention, and hence I do not limit myse f to the precise details set forth, but considcr myself at liberty to make such changes and alterations as fairly fall Within the spirit and scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A sharpening device for double edged blades, comprisln arallcl bones, and means for moving a doiilil nally of the bones with each cutting edge of the blade in contact with a hone, substantially as described.
2. A sharpening device for double edged blades, comprising two stationary bones, angular in cross section and disposed with angular edges adacent'each other, and means for movin a ouble edged blade longitudinally of the bones wi h each cutting edge e edged blade longitudistantially as described.
3. A sharpening device for double edged blades, comprising two stationary hones, an-
r in cross section and dis osed with angular edges adjacent each ot er, means for moving a double edged blade longitudinall oftbe bones with each cutting edge of means adapted to be oscillated whereby the ogipositeaides of the blade are presented to 4 e hones substantially as described.
compnam' 3 parallel bones, rectan a: in cross section and disposed with ngular {edges toward each other, and means for moving the razor blade in simultaneous contact with both of. said bones, substantially as de- 8611 t .lLA device of the character described com rising parallel bones, and a razor hol erwnstructcd and adapted to be reciprocated and oscillated wherebyotbo m cutting edges of the razor blade have b sides prescnbed.
6. A device of as character described compr sing two parallel bones, each hone anmg surfaces at an angle to eac guide between said bones, and a, razor blade holder movable in said guide and constructed and adapted to be reciprocatcd and inscribed. j v v 7. A device of the character described comprising parallel bones, each hone an gular in crom section and having its honing surfaces at an angle to the other, bars connccting the bones atone end, a guide sleeve I fixcdin said bars between said bones, and a 5 razor blade holder removably mounted in i said guide sleeve, substantially as described. 1 8. A device of the character described icomprising parallel bones, rectangular in 'cross section and disgo' scd with angular edges adjacent each 0 er, bars connecting the bones at one cnd,a ide sleeve fixed to said bars between the 011s, and a razor blade holder removal)! mounted in said guide sleeve, substantia y as described.
In testimony whereof I here signed my name to this specification in the presence of I two subscribing witnesses.
