Description
tion by spring No..1.
"DANIEL J. GALE," or SHEBOYGAN raLLs WISCONSIN.
Letters Patent IVe-96,792, dated November 16, 1869.
' IMPROVEMENT IN CALENDAR-CLOCKS.
The Schedule' referred to in these Letters Patent -md making part of the lame.
Be it known .that I, DANIEL J. Gunn, of the village of Sheboygan Falls, in the county of Sheboygan,
, and State of illisconsiln4 have' invented anew and.
useful Double,` Ierpetual, and Lunar Calendar-Attachment to a Glock; and I do hereby declare that ine following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference,
being had to the accompanying drawing. f
Y A, in the drawing, represents. a LtrgeJ-spurfwheel, which is caused to revolve .with the shaft S once in twenty-four hours, and is provided with -eighty Ateeth.- A On the same shaft also revolve. a spurwheel, G, having thirty-one teeth, anda pinion,v p, with twelve teeth. l
On the said wheel A is a pin, marked a, so arranged as to move wheel B one point at each revolui tion of shaft S. This wheel B has/seven long teeth, to correspond to the number of days in eacli week.
O is a wheel with fifty-live teeth, and drives the lpinion D and wheel E, which has fifty-six teeth.
Ou wheel .E is a pin, marked b, whiclrmovcs Ennepointateachrevolution.
F has twenty-nineteeth, 'to correspond to the nurnber of days in a lunar mouth, and is detained in. posi'- Onthe wheelG isa group of three pins, marked g', which move the coarse-toothed pinion d, on shaft ,0, three points at each revolution ot said wheel.
On the shaft', O 'is also. a, line-'toothed pinion,'c, which revolves wheel' H once, whileGrevolves twelve times; that isto say,the wheel G revolves once in a mont-h, while H revolves once in a year.
- This wheel. H has seventy-twoteeth, and is provided with six pins, marked h h h, tive on one side and one on 'the other.
The function to' be performed by the pins 'h h is` to move .the hinge X, and they represent the relatively short months of tlie'year, hl'being for February 29.
The purpose of h is to move wheel l on February 28 of each year; except'leap-yean The spur-wheell has twenty-four teeth, and is provided witheighteeu pins. j. l
One of these pins moves the shortest arm k, on the lever-shaft i, on the night of February 28,' eccept when leap-year occurs..
Hinge X moves the longest arm k on lever-shaft s .on the night of February 29 of leap-year, and also on the night-ofthe 30th of each month, when that is the ii'nal day thereof. i
Wheel H has a'detaining-spring, No. 2l
The wheel I describes. a complete circle or orbit once in a cycle of`tweuty-four years, is successively moved vtherein by-pin h2, and held intoevery new po sitiou. gained by, de'tainer-spring N o. 3.
K is a rlong lever, attached fixedly at one end to the shalt i, while the other end is allowed to comel in "contact periodically with a pin or arm, 8, ot' main 'Bllafts 4' The said lever K, being 'engaged by arm 8, is ca rried against the large pin y, on wheel G,- and thereby causes the longest hand to move away from the last day of every month having less than thirty-one days,
-over to the 1st of the succeeding month.
' This lever has ,also a retiacting -spring, No. i', which, as soon as it is disengaged from arm 8, carries it back to its place.
.e Lis a wheel, fast to a sleeve on the shaltS, has forty teetlnand gears with pinion fm, which is located on the same shaitwith the wheels-Mld. L, with its sleeve, makes one revolution to twelve of wheel G.;
M Mis drivenhy theupiuion p, and has thirty-six teeth,A fort-he purpose'of reducing the velocity` of wheel L.
ward or backward.
The shaft Awhich carries 4wheel Ii has also a detainiug-spring, N 0.6.
The above constitutes the arrangement o f shafts,
geant-wheels, and actnating-pins, to produce the different movements required npon'the dial-plate.
The dial is perforated at the. points shown, to admit the ends of as inany driving-shafts through its upper surface. y i
The central shaft S carries a long hand, to' point out the days of :the month, adjusted bythe machinery Y so as to allow forv the monthly-. inequalities.
The hollow/shaft or sleeve which -encircles said. l shaft S carries the hand next inlength, and indicates,
by appropriate notations, thc month, week,'and-correspending day of month on which a given week oc cuis, from the irst to the fifty-second.
The long baud, ofcourse, makes twelve revolutions while the other makes a single one. 1' The notations arranged in the middle circle, as
shown on'the dial, exhibit clearly each week to itself,-
'and the month, and day of the mouth' on vwhich it occurs, from New Years day to the end .of thc year.
' The movements of the machinery 'are so timed that the hands change position at night, andhnevel` require anymianpulation, directly-cr indirectly.
' The hand which is employed to denote the different" phases ofthe moon, is operated by a wheel, F, as is' apparent from the drawing.
From the above description it will he observed that `I` have invented a clock-attachment, which points an nnerring finger to the day of the week and month, to the date on which each week commences throughout the year, t0 the number of weeks which have already The wheel Gis also provided with vspring No. 5, which vis so adjusted y that said wheel can move for expired, and to the particular phase in which themoon'may be zitting time. l.
To the manufacturer'end capitalist )rho pay hands at a weekly ratefor 'to the farmer, who` looks to the moon as insome Adegree an index 'othe weathen'ud ofthe time to sow and harvest, the valne of my at- Y taionsupon a. faoe or dialfplateythedzpy, the week, and-month, the on vrhielr week commences,
the nnmberf of Weeks expired, andthe' phases of the moon, al1 operated bythe same actuating-power, and autoriatically,as set forth. i A
2. The' wheel F, hving twenty-nine tee'thz the wheel E, having 'fifty-six teeth, and the wheel Qihzwing fifty-five teeth, combined, arranged; and-operated as and for the plrpse specified. 1
. 3. vThe arlingement of pins h. hl h, vhingeX, wheel I, and the eighteen pins thereto attached, arms k K,
:nfl the shafts O 'i,to adapt the movement of indieator -to the difference in the length of the several months, as specified'. J
