Be it known that I, THOMAS BILYEU, a citizen of the United States, residing at Portland, in the county of Multnomah and State of Oregon, my post-office address being Suite 24, Ainsworth Block, have in vented a new and useful Collapsible Pile Case or Former, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates particularly to the art of making concrete piles, the invention comprising a device for forming holes in the ground.
In carrying out the invention a special construction of former of collapsible form is provided, said former being adapted to be driven into the ground while connected with a driving core, and then removed from the ground to leave an opening in which is filled the concrete or plastic material that forms the pile or foundation.
An essential feature of the invention resides in the peculiar construction of the collapsible former and the removable driving core therefor, the latter cooperating to increase the rigidity of the former when being driven, and being furthermore designed to facilitate the removal of the parts of the hole forming device.
For a full understanding of the invention reference is to be had to the following detail description and to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation, partially broken away to illustrate certain parts in section, and showing a pile former embodying the present invention; Fig. 2 is a section taken about on the line 22 of Fig. 3 and looking in the direction of the arrow; Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the driving head and hammer block, the former being partially broken away in section; Fig. 4; is a horizontal sectional view taken about on the line H of Fig. 1, and Fig. 5 is an enlarged fragmentary view bringing out more clearly the connection between the driving core and its driving point.
Throughout the following detail description and on the several figures of the drawings similar parts are referred to by like reference characters.
The hole forming device comprising this invention consists of a hollow former A made preferably in two sections 1 and 2. The sections 1 and 2 are connected at adjacent vertical edges, and on one side of the Specification of Letters Patent.

former, by a hinge connection 3, said connection being established by securing to the outer sides of the sections 1 and 2 a plurality of hinge plates 4, the hinge or bearing portions of said plates interlocking with one another and receiving a suitable pint-1e rod constituting the connection 3 aforesaid. While the horizontal portions of theplates A are exterior to the former A they extend inwardly between the adjacent pivotally connected edges of said former as shown in Fig. 4: of the drawings.
The lower end of the former A is open for a purpose hereinafter described, and the free edges of the sections 1 and 2, those edges opposite the connection 3, are connected by means of a plate 5 riveted or otherwise secured to the free edge of the section 2 and provided with lugs or projections 6 extending inwardly therefrom and entering short slots 7 in the free edge portion of the section 1. By reason of the structure indicated at 5, 6, and 7, it will be apparent that the former A is adapted to expand and contract. Arranged within the former A is a driving core B made up of a plurality of T-beams 8, the heads of which are outermost so as to frictionally engage the inner side of the former A, the inner web portions of the beam 8 being connected rigidly together by angle plates 9 riveted or otherwise fastened thereto. It will be understood that the core B as well as the former A, tapers toward its lower end, and said core carries at its lower extremity a driving point 10 preferably of solid structure. One or more of the beams 8 is forged with an extension 8 at its lower end, said extension passing through the point 10 and having its lower end upset or riveted to securely fasten the point to the core, whereby when the core is removed the point will be removed from the former therewith.
At the upper end of the core B is a driving head 0, said head being formed in its upper side with a recess 11 in which a hammer block 12 is seated, said block receiving directly thereon the blows of the pile driver, should such a machine be employed to sink the former into the ground. The lower portion of the head C is hollow and the web portions of the T-beams 8 of the core B extend upwardly into said hollow portion, as shown in Fig. 1, being securely fastened to the head by means of suitable angle plates 13. The head C therefore virtually constitiites a part of the driving core B and the lower edge of said head is formed with a groove 14 adapted to receive the upper ends of the sections 1 and 2 of the former A. The driving head C thus has an interlocking connection with the sections of the former A and the structure described is such that said head reinforces the connections between the sections of the former cooperating to prevent expansive movement of the parts 1 and 2 as limited by the pin and slot connection 6 and 7. Contraction of the diameter of the former at its upper end is also prevented by means of the interlocking connection 14 of said head with respect to the sections of the former. The core B when in position in the former A is arranged so that the point 10 projects out of the opening at the lower end of the former, the headed portions of the T- beams 8 being of less length than the former A to permit the upper end of the latter to enter the groove 14:. On the outer portion of the former A, a slight distance from its upper extremity is fixed in any substantial manner an enlargement 15 which comprises sections secured rigidly to the sections 1 and 2. The outermost edge portion of the head C of the core engages at its lower end with the enlargement 15 while the innermost edge portion of said head engages the heads of the beams forming the core B. It will be thus apparent that the driving head C has a firm bearing both against the core B and the upper end of the former A, in'the operation of sinking the device into the ground, this being extremely advantageous.
On the outer opposite sides of the head C are provided journals 16 and mounted on said journals are cam levers 17, said levers being provided with double cams 17 adjacent to the pivots or journals 16 of the levers. The levers 17 are designed to perform a dual function, first, to facilitate the reliminary to removal of the core.
moval of the driving core B, and secondly, to separate said core from the former A pre- It will be obvious that when a former embodying the invention has been sunk the desired depth into the ground the core B is firmly wedged therein and considerable force must be exerted in order to separate said core from the former A preliminary to its removal. The levers 17 afford a simple means whereby the parts A and B may be separated by a minimum amount of power, said levers being connected with the hoisting means 18 so that the initial pull on the hoisting means 18 will tilt the levers 17 swinging their cams about on the enlargement 15 of the former, thereby readily disengaging the core from the former,
further upward movement of the hoisting means 18 will lift the core B out. of the former A in an obvious manner. The core B having been removed there will be no resistance to the natural tendency of the sections 1 I and 2 of the former to contract, or' they may be contracted to reduce the diameter of the former by external power, and when this has been done the former can be readily removed from the opening made thereby, during 7 which operation of removal the plastic ma-. terial designed to fill the opening formed by the device may be filled into the hole or opening through the former.
The removal of the former A is accomplished by connectin suitable hoisting means, not shown, with apertured lugs or plates 19 which are securely fastened to the former near its upper end, and the upper edge portions of which afford a bearing for the enlargement 15 adapted to reinforce said enlargement when receiving the concussion of blows applied to the driving head C.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. A pile forming device comprising a hollow former, a driving core removably mounted therein, hoisting devices for removing the core from the former, and levers connecting the hoisting devices with the core and arranged to engage the former to facilitate initial disengagement of the core from the former.
2. A pile forming device comprising a hollow former, a removable core therein, hoisting means for lifting the core out of the former, and devices operable by said hoisting means to positively separate the core from the former previous to removal of the core.
3. In combination, a hollow former, a driving core mounted therein, a driving head for said core, and hoisting means for removing the core including levers pivoted to the driving head and arranged to engage the 105 former to positively separate the core therefrom previous to removal of the core.
4. A ile forming device comprising a hollow former, a core arranged therein, a driving point, a driving head provided with 110 a lower hollow portion receiving the upper end of the core, and angle plates in said hollow portion connecting the driving head and core.
5. A pile forming device comprising an 115 expansible former, and a driving head therefor interlocking with the former and limiting the expanslbility thereof.
6. A pile forming device comprising a hollow former consisting of expansible sec- 1 tions, and a driving head having means for limiting the expansion of the sections of the former.
7. A hollow pile former comprising expansible sections, a core removably mounted 125 therein, and a driving head for said core and former and interlocking with the sections of the former to limit the relative movement thereof.
8. A hollow pile former comprising ex- 1 pansible and contractible sections, and a driving head for limiting the relative contract-ing movement of said sections.
9. A hollow pile former comprising expansible and contractible sections, and a driving head therefor provided with means for limiting the relative expanding and contracting movement of said sections.
10. A hollow pile former comprising expansible and contractible sections, a driving core removably mounted therein, and a driving head rigidly attached to the driving core and provided with means for limiting the expansive and contractive movement of the former sections.
11. A hollow pile former comprising expansible and contractible sections, a driving core relnovably mounted therein, and a driving head rigidly attached to the driving core and provided with a groove receiving the upper ends of the former sections and limiting the expansive and contractive 1novement thereof.
12. In combination, a hollow former, a driving head therefor, and a cam device mounted on the driving head and engaging the former.
13. In combination, a hollow former, a driving head therefor, cam device mounted on the driving head and engaging the former, and hoisting means connected with said cam device for removing the driving head after the initial movement of the cam device to separate said head and former.
14. In. combination, a hollow former, 'a driving head therefor, a driving core within said former and secured to the head, and cam devices cooperating with the head and former to impart slight longitudinal movement of the driving core preliminary to removal thereof.
15. In combination, a hollow former, a driving head therefor, a driving core within said former and secured to the head, cam devices cooperating with the head and former to impart slight longitudinal movement: to the driving core preliminary to removal thereof, and hoisting means connected with said cam devices to completely withdraw the core from the former.
