To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JAMns N. KELLY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bozeman, in the county of Gallatin, State of Montana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Ironing- Boards and Step-Ladders; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

The invention relates to a combined ironing board and step ladder.

The primary object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character in which the ironing board may be readily attached to the edge of a table in a secure and rigid manner so that it may be used for ironing and pressing purposes.

Another object of the invention is the pro vision of a device of this character which may be used either as a step ladder or an ironing board and that may be readily folded so as to occupy the least possible space when not in use.

A further object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character that may be readily and quickly attached to various thicknesses of table tops and which possesses rigidity and that is capable of being used either as a ladder or ironing board.

A still further object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character which is simple in construction, thoroughly reliable and eflicient in operation, and inexpensive in the manufacture.

With these and other objects in view, the present invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described, shown in the accompanying drawings, and particularly pointed out in the appended claim, it being understood that changes, in the form, proportion, and minor details may be made, without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.

In the drawings :-Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device constructed in accordance with the invention applied in operative position to the end of a table. Fig. 2 is a side view of the device folded. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the device in position for use as a ladder.

responding parts throughout the several views in the drawings.

Referring to the drawings by numerals the numeral 5 designates generally a ladder section comprising spaced outwardly diverging side rails 6, between which latter are secured at intervals steps 7, which may be mounted to the side rails in any desirable manner. Secured to the upper end of the side rail 6, is a head platform or rest board 8, and to the under face of the latter and the longitudinal front edges of the rail 6 are secured substantially triangular-shaped bearing blocks or pieces 9, the purpose of which will be hereinafter described.

Connected to the step 7 adjacent the head platform or rest board 8, by hinges 10, is an ironing board 11, the same being cut away at opposite longitudinal side edges for a distance thereof as at 12, to form a reduced inner end 13 which projects between the bars 6, forming the sides of the ladder section and is adapted to bear against the under face of the table top 14:, while the bearing blocks or pieces 9 are adapted to frictionally engage the upper surface of the table top when the device is in position for use as an ironing board.

Secured to the under face of the board 11, at a desirable distance removed from its free end is a perforated lug or eye 15, to which is adapted to be detachably connected a snap hook 16, carried at one end of a flexible strap 17, the opposite end of which is fixed to the lowermost step 7, of the ladder sect-ion. This flexible strap 17, when connected between the ladder section and the board serves to prevent the spreading of the same apart when the device is in use as a ladder.

It will be obvious that the bearing blocks or pieces 9 serve a double function in that they support the front edge portion of the head platform or rest board 8, and also provide a flat gripping bearing surface when the upper end of the ladder section is disposed in a position for clamping between it and the inner end 13, of the ironing board the table top. It is further apparent that the board 11 when supporting the ladder section for use does not interfere with or interrupt a person climbing the ladder section and also when standing thereon near or upon the platform head or rest board of the ladder section.

From the foregoing description it will be seen that the device as described is capable of a variety of adjustments to various thicknesses of table tops, and that When not in use it may be folded into a compact form for transportation or storage.

That is claimed is The herein described combined ironing board and step ladder comprising a ladder member and an ironing board member, said ladder member comprising a pair of side rails, spaced step pieces connecting said side rails, a head platform secured on the upper ends and of greater width than the side rails so that the front and rear sides of said platform overhang the front and rear edges of said rails and triangular bearing blocks secured in the angles between the front edges of the rails and the overhanging front portion of the said platform, the front edges of said bearing blocks being flush with the front edge of said platform, the said board being hinged to the rear side of the step next to the head platform and having an upper portion above said step extending and movable angularly between the side rails of the ladder member and terminating short of thesaid platform, thereby adapting said end of the board member to lie under the top of a table and the said front ed e of the head platform and front :edges of said bearing blocks to bear on the upper side of said table and support said ironing board in a horizontal position, said ironin board when the device is usedas a step ladder forming a leg thereof.
