BED-FRAME.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, EDWARD J. PLAYFOOT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Galeton, in the county of Potter and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bed-Frames, of which the following is a specification.

The primary object of the present invention is to provide a novel, simple and practicable structure that is foldable for the purpose of storage and transportation, and is also easily extensible in order that the springs may be at all times maintained in properly taut condition.

The primary object of the present invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a top plan View of the frame. Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof. Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view. Fig. 4 is a detail cross sectional view. Fig. 5 is a detail longitudinal sectional view on the line 5--5 of Fig. 1.

In the embodiment illustrated, the frame comprises two main members, one of said members consisting of an end cross bar 6 and longitudinal side bars 7, the latter being provided in their free ends with longitudi nally disposed sockets 8 that have internal. shoulders 9 at their inner ends. The terminals of the side bars 7 are beveled or inclined, as shown at 10. The other member consists of an end cross bar 11 and longitudinal side bars, the side bars being composed of sections 12 and 13 that are extensible. To this end, the sections 12 are provided with dowels 1 1 that slidably and detachably engage in sockets 15 formed in the ends of the sections 13. Washers, as 16, may be interposed between the sections in order to extend the member.

The sections 13 are provided with longitudinally disposed terminal tongues 17 that are normally located in the sockets 8 and are pivotally mounted therein, as shown at 18.

The ends of these tongues are cut away, as shown at 19 to provide stop shoulders 20 that abut against the internal shoulders 9.

The sections 13 are furthermore provided on opposite sides of the tongues 17 with inclined shoulders 21 that coiiperate with the inclined ends 10 to limit the swinging move mentof the members.

Connected to the cross bars 6 and 11 is a suitable bed bottom spring member 22 which is arranged between but is preferably free from the side bars. This bed bottom memher is fastened to the cross bars in any suitable manner, preferably, however, by strips 23, which constitute means for clamping the ends of the spring to the cross bar.

It will be obvious that this structure can be folded for the purpose of storage and transportation, and when extended, will constitute a rigid structure. The extensible section permits the springs to be tightened whenever desired by placing washers between the sections 12 and 13, and the sections being detachable, permits the spring to be secured to the end bars with ease and expedition.

From the foregoing, it is thought that the construction, operation and many advantages of the herein described invention will be apparent to those skilled in the art, without further description, and it will be under stood that various changes in the size, shape, proportion and minor details of construc tion, may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.

Having thus fully described myinven' tion, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. A foldable bed bottom comprising a frame member having longitudinal side bars provided therein with shouldered sockets and having beveled ends, and a second frame member having two-part extensible side bars 12-13 pivotally mounted in said sockets and provided with stop shoulders engaging the shoulders of the sockets.
