BOX-CLOSURE Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 9, 1910.
Application filed August 31, 1909. Serial No. 515,517.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I. Anus I I. McALLisTisn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Millersville, in the county of Lancaster and State of lennsvlvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Box- Closures, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompairring drawing.
My invention relates to an apparatus for closing and pressing the tops upon boxes or cases, such as tobacco cases, which have been opened for the purpose of sampling the contents and upon which, owing to the expansion of the contents, the cover has to be forced thereon until it can be retained by the proper nailing.
The objects of the invention are to produce a device of this class that may be easily and quickly applied to the case and is of such form that by .a slight exertion of the operator great pressure on the cover may be obtained.
\Vith these and other objects in view my invention consists in certain construction and combination of parts as will hereinafter be fully described and claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this application; but it is fully understood that while I have here described my invention as here illustrated, that I do not confine myself to the exact design as shown, as slight changes may be made in the construction and arrangement of the several parts without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawings :-The figure is a perspective view of the device as applied, and the cover secured for nailing; while the dotted lines show the position of the device before pressing.
Referring to the drawings, 1, indicates a pressing block, upon which, and parallel thereto, is journaled the rocker-shaft 2, in the bearings 3; while upon the ends of said rocker-shaft 2, are rigidly secured the occentric members 4, and which are also attached to the ends of the V-shaped handle 5; while the points of said eccentric members 4, are provided with the pins or studs 6, which are formed with a head 11, and which project therefrom atright angles to the outerpart thereof the loop 10, the sides of which are farther apart near the lower portion for the reception of the head 11, of the stud (3, allowing the head 11, to pass therethrough; while the sides of the loop farther up or toward the end of the arm are nearer togcther and will retain the loop from slipping off of the stud 6; this arrangementbeing for the purpose of quickly disconnecting the arms.
The operation of the device as a whole is as follows :The pressing block having been placed upon the lid of the case and the gripping arms put in place with their lower ends in engagement wi the bottom of the box and their upper .tecured upon the studs 6, with the hand; .a a vertical position; the handle is then pulled down thus exerting an upward pull upon the gripping arms, and as the studs rise upward and pass over the center, the gripping arms will be held in their farthest upward position withoutfurther exertion on the part of the hand-lever until the box lid can be permanently secured in place.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is In a box closure, in combination with a pressing block having a rocker shaft mounted thereon, of a handle secured to the ends of said shaft, rocker arms secured to the ends of said handle adjacent to said shaft, studs formed upon the ends of said arms and projecting atright angles therefrom, and a gripping arm detachably mounted upon said studs and adapted to engage the bottom of the. box.
In testimony whereof I atlix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
' AMOS H. iHc-ALLISTER.
