UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WALLACE L. DU VALL, OF PEARSON, GEORGIA.
CANNING MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 627,330, dated June 20, 1899.
Application filed July 19,1898. Serial No. 686,383. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WALLACE L. DU VALL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pearson, in the county of Coffee and State of Georgia, have invented a new and useful Canning-Machine, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in canning devices. i
The object of the. present invention is to provide a simple, inexpensive, and efficient device designed for canning fruit and the like for family use and adapted to enable cans to be rapidly handled and supported in a boiler at the desired elevation to suit the size of the cans and the depth of the water.
The invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claim hereto appended.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a canning device constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. .2 is a vertical sectional view of the same.
Like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in both figures of the drawings.
1 designates a receptacle forming a boiler and having a depressed bottom 2, adapted to fit a stove-hole, and within the receptacle is arranged a vertically-adjustable tray 3,
adapted to receive a series of cans and having an inclined upper face 4:,preferably formed enable the same to be readily raised and lowered. The frame 7, which is substantially rectangular, forms a bail, and its sides, which extend upward from opposite sides of the receptacle, are riveted to the same, as clearly shown at 8 in Fig. 2 of the accompanying drawings.
The rod, which has a suitable handle 9 at its upper end, is provided at one side with a series of teeth 10, and the other side of the rod is smooth and is adapted to afiord a bearin g, so that when the teeth of the rod are disengaged from the frame or bail the tray may be readily raised and lowered without liability of the teeth catching on the frame or bail and interfering with the manipulation of the cans. The tray is secured at any desired elevation by engaging one of the notches formed by the teeth with the edge of the bail or frame at one side of the opening 6, and the rod is locked in suchengagement by a lever 11, fulcrumed near one end upon the frame or bail at a point adjacent to the rod. The
inner end of the lever is adapted to engage the rod and force the teeth into engagement with the bail or frame, and the outer arm of the lever forms a handle which is arrangedin a convenient position to be readily grasped by the operator.
The invention has the following advan= tages: The canning device, which is simple and comparatively inexpensive in construction, is easily manipulated and the tray or support can be conveniently adjusted and secured at the desired elevation; also, by providing the teeth at one side of the rod and having the opposite side thereof smooth the rod is adapted to slide readily through the opening of the bail or frame without catching on the same.
Changes in the form, proportion, and minor details of construction maybe resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrific ing any of the advantages of this invention.
What is claimed is g A device of the class described comprising a receptacle, a frame or support mounted thereon and provided with an opening, a vertical1y adjustable can-supporting tray, a rod connected with the tray and passing through the opening of the frame or support, one side of the rod being smooth and the other side being provided with notches or teeth for engag ing the frame or support, and a locking-lever mounted on the latter and engaging the smooth side of the rod to hold the teeth or notches in engagement with the frame or support, substantially as described.
