SCORE-BOOK AND COVER [PI-11151133215OR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed July 19, 1909. Serial .No. 508,285.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALEXANDER S. HEN- DRY, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of McPherson, county of McPherson, and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Score-Books and Covers Therefor, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to score books and covers therefor, particularly to score books used for keeping the scores of base ball games.
The object of the invention is to provide a cover which will hold the book in a secure position, avoid having the book soiled by handling or torn by the wind, and which will yet permit an easy marking upon the ruled or prepared sheet of the score book.
In the accompanying drawings,-Figure 1 is a plan showing the face of the book with an opening through the cover through which the blank page of the score book may be seen; Fig. 2 is a section through the central portion of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 represents the cover opened and the book-part removed; and Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the book that is inserted in the cover, and which has its pages prepared for the reception of the scores of the players.
In the said drawings, 1 is a blank book containin a comparatively small number of pages, and which may be folded in any position so as to have any pages facing outward. For example, taking the book shown in Fig. 4, if it be opened out wide and then folded backward so that the ruled page which is shown forms the outside face on one side, the other page facing this illustrated page will be outside facing in the opposite direction. This book is inserted in an ordinary cover 2, which has a rectangular or other opening 8, through which the ruled and numbered face 4 of the book 1 may be seen. The illustration shows both boards of the cover having the rectangular or other openings 8, and I may make it either that way or with one cover only having such opening.
When the score book 1 is folded back so that two pages which are normally adjacent to each other form the outside pages of the book, and the book is inserted within the cover, the marked parts of the book are exposed on each side, as shown in Fig. 1. A rubber band 5 is then used to hold the two boards of the cover together, so that the free ends will not open and permit the boo-k to drop out. When so made and held, the book will not be blown about by the wind and have its leaves torn, nor will the pages be soiled by handling, as the hand needs only to touch the cover itself. The scores of the different players are marked in the ruled spaces shown in Figs. 1 and 4.
When a book is used for scoring a base ball game, the two pages of the book which when closed are normally adjacent each other are folded out-ward, and the score is marked through one opening for one club, and marked through the other opening for the other club.
hen the book is to be used for scoring some other game, the book is opened at a difierent place and replaced in the cover, and secured in the cover in the same way previously described.
That I claim is:
1. The combination with any score-book having ruled pages upon which the scores of different players may be entered, of a cover therefor in which the book may be placed and held with its ruled pages facing outward, said cover having a rectangular opening therein through which the score keeper may mark upon the partially exposed ruled page of the book the score of each player as made.
2. The combination with any flexible score-book having its pages prepared for the making of scores and being arranged to be folded backward so that any two pages normally facing each other will face outward on opposite sides from each other, of a relatively rigid cover within which said book 'may be freely placed and withdrawn, both faces of said cover being provided with rectangular openings so arranged as to expose for marking purposes the main portions of the outwardly facing pages of the score-book.
Patented A11 9, 1.91 0.
3. The combination With any flexible book arranged to be folded so that any two adjacent pages will form the outside faces thereof, of a cover having a rectangular or other opening therein through Which the exposed face of the book may be marked, and means for holding the free ends of the cover together so as to prevent the exposed portion of the book from slipping with respect to the opening in the cover. 10
Signed at McPherson, Kansas, this 12 day r of July 1909.
