t crains. (ci. 2er-ii s invention is a notation or memoranda device in the nature of a combined pocket bool: and score card.
An object is to provide a book with one or 5 more pages of forms including memoranda lines and suitable indicia or indexes therefor, in combination with a foldable back or cover capable of being opened out flat t'o present a good size area for the ready display of the indicia sheets, and
in. combinationwith a plurality of Writing Windows, 'all so constructed and arrangedas to be folded to a very compact condition of a size to be readily, conveniently and -uri-noticeably carried in the pocket of a piece of wearing material, or woman's lpurse if so desired.
A further object is to provide a device'of this class in which the Writing Windows have but a quarter of the inner face area ofthe back or cover and in which the index sheet is an oblong lwhich is twice the area of the Window element, and in which the back is a square whose sides are substantially equal to the length of the index sheet; all being so constructed and arranged as to provide for the utilization of either face of the index sheet as a. guide for making entries on the inscription face of the writing Window.
'lihe invention consists of certain advanceinents in the method and apparatus of this art -as set forth in the ensuing disclosure and `having, with the above, additional objects and advantages as hereinafter developed, and Whose manner of operation and construction, combination and means, and details of features will be 35 made manifest inthe description of the herewith.
understood that modifications, variations and. adaptations may be resorted to within the scope, principle and'spirit of the invention as it is more directly claimed hereinbelow.
Figure 1 is a perspective of the device in open position; a half of one sheet being out-turned to show manipulation of the parts.
Figure 2 is an edge view of the comted or closed book.
Figure 3 is a sectional perspective of a holddown tab.
Figure 4 is a plan of an example of a gaine card imprinted on one of thebook sheets.
Figure 5 is an enlarged detail of one of the indiced play record spaces otf a. score card.
The cover or back 2 preferably consists of a single, square piece of durable flexible material, such as leather, or its substantial equivaent, to form enough backing to sustain applied 55 indicia sheets 3, which are oblongs of about onedisclosed and illustrative embodiment; it beingv vreadily erased at Will.
half the inner face area ofthe back t. |The sheets 3 are detachably attached to the vertical center-line of the back by any suitable or desired fasteners t and are medially foldable, vertically, to form squares of about a quarter secii or cut out at b to facilitate the folding of the lli upper-halves of the book either with the inner faces face to face, or the outer faces back to back.
, In order to preserve the indicia pages or sheets d for repeated use a feature of the invention re- 2li sides in the provision of a set of four equi-sized transparencies t, which are substantially quarter-sections in area of the inner face of the i; the outer surfaces being sumciently abraded to receive pen or pencil notations which may be 25 The members or Writing Windows t are Water-proof and form firm surfaces, but have a desirable degree of flexibility; celluloid being especially adaptable.
Each of the writing Windows is suitably attached along its outer vertical edge, as by stitche ing i, to the overlapped margins t of the back 22. This leaves the inner-most edges of the windows t free and lying close `to the verticalv axis of the book of sheets (i, of which any suitable nurnber may be used.
Suitable retainers' are provided to releasably hold'down the free inner corners of the windows t. As here shown, at the top and bottom of the vertical diameter of the back there are provided 40 tabs 5i, preferably of triangular form, medially stitched at it to the baci: and thus forming :1.1. l, pockets into which may be tucked the adjacent corners of the Windows t. At the intersection of the vertical and horizontal center-lines of the back 2 there is stitched, or otherwise attached, a square pad il, with its edges diagonally arranged on the back and forming four pockets for the four innermost corners of the Windows t. The tabs il and the pad or patch Ill are made of flexible` material to provide for the folding of the cover sections. y
llt will be seen that when the back is opened out :dat to present the sheets or leaves 3, the presented faces are covered by the Writing windows l. The front and back oi each page o! each sheet C may be provided with amr desired indicia and column or line forms, according to the character of record to be kept; the memoranda beirig entered on the face of the writing window, for later transfer to a permanent record as desired. Either face of any page (one-half of a sheet 3) may be presented by merely turning it to a position under either relative writing window. To provide for this without interference by the retainers S-I I, the centers of the top and bottom edges ci the leaves, Fig. 4, are notched out at i2 to clear the retainers as the page part is turned, as shown inFig. 1, after its covering window. at the right, for instance, has been released from its retainers. The window under which the page is tobe laid is then pulled from under its corner retainers and the free page is lapped down to place and the desired window is again laid down and tucked under its retainers.
The device is especially useful for the keeping of a temporary score or tally oir a desired game or contest and in Fig. 4, there is 'shown a preferred form of score card for a base-ball game in which imprinted indicia and relative spaces are provided for the guidance of an entry on the face of the overlapped writing window. v
A feature of this score card consists of an index comprising a quadrangle, Fig. 5, including a home-plate mark I5 and the base numerals l, 2", f3 disposed in the usual form of a baseball diamond. A letter H in the left field area indicates a home run by a player. During each inning oi' a game the person keeping the score, scribes in the quadrangle Il, a line from the home plate mark to the base marks gained by a player. The remaining symbols of the base-ball score card are conventional and well known; but their arrangement here is distinctive and unique.
The word card as used herein means an imprinted, or otherwise made, surface on which is displayed a chart for any given gaine in which opposing parties or teams are matched, or a surface of other indicia and notation forms.
What is claimed is:
1. A combined memoranda book comprising a 4 back of rectangular form and which is foldable on its center-lines to form a pack of about one quarter of the area of the face of the back, and a pair of cards which together about equal the size oi' the back: the cards being provided on respective half-sections of the back so as to lie in plain view when the back is opened hat and an independent,
quarter-section, writing window for each quarter section card part.
2. A device as set forth in claim 1, and in which each card is an oblong of about one-halt of a face area of the back and is detachably secured to a center-line oi' the back and is foldable on its own minor axis when the back is closed; one card being on one nali and one on the other half o1 the back.
3. A memoranda book comprising a. back of square form which is foldable to form a square pack oi' about one quarter o1 the area of the face of the book back, a pair of score cards on and each covering about one-half of the inner face oi the back and being medially. attached te the vertical center-line of the back, one on the upper half and one on the lower hali'V of the back, and writing windows each covering about one-halt of each card and aiilxed to the back and having an outer tace providing for entry and erasure of play feature records oi.' the game indicated on the score cards.
4. A device as set forth in claim 3, and in which said windows are secured to the back alone on one edge only o! each Window; whereby the end halves of each score card may, at will, be folded from one position to another under either of its respective windows.
5. A memoranda book comprising a back of suitable form and which is ioldable into a pack o! about a quarter section size of the back and is readily bendable on its center-lines to provide for ready folding of its sections, writing windows about covering each quarter section of the inner face of the backl and being secured, each, along one oi' its edges to the back, indicia sheets each of about the area of one half of the inner face of the back and being secured along its minor axis to the back, both on the vertical center-line of the back, and quarter section writing windows ailixed to respective sections of the back and having free inner edges adjacent to the minor axis ot the relative, extended sheet; whereby the free halves of the sheets may be turned to underlie either oi the windows covering its area of the back.
6. A device as set forthin claim 5, and having means for releasably retaining the free end. corners of the windows to hold them close to the indicia sheets and to facilitate notation on the Windows.
