IMPROVED'PPARATUS FOR CARBONIZNG- PHAT.
Thelchedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same To all whom it may concerti:
Be it -known that I, J ons ADAMS, of the city of Rochester, county of Monroe, and State of New York, have invent-ed a certain new and useful Improvement 1n Oarbouizing Peat, to` be used for marking-ink and other useful purposes; and I do herebj,r declare that l the following is a t'nll and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, iu which- Figure l is an elevation of my improved apparatus.

My ini-ention consists in carbonizing peat, for malcing into marking-ink and other useful products, by placing the same in an apparatus of peculiar construction, and treating substantially as hereinafter described. 5
In the drawings- A A represent furnaces of any ordinary construction, havinggrates a a and ash-chal'nbers b b.
In the furnaces are placed closed retorts B B, which enter endwise, and restin such a position as to leave a clear and unobstructed passage for the heat all around.
The outer ends of these retorts are made removable, for the purpose of inserting and removing the peat to be acted on.
Over the furnaces is situated a steam-boiler, C,
having a water-supply pipe, c, and safety-valve d at,
ling through t-he head, and each of the furnara-.s a
steam-pipe, h, opening therein.
All these pipes, (1 g and h h,.are arranged in a circle struck from the centre 0f pipe f.
The pipes q y and f are provided with ordinary stop-cocks i 'i i.
A curved pipe, I), is connected with steam-pipe f, by means of a swivel-clamp, It, and also with any one, of the other steam-pipes, by a similar swivel-clamp, k.
By this means the pipe 1 turning on centre j', can swing and connect with any or all ot' the pipes g g h h in succession, to let in steam to the retorts and furnaces, to extinguish the tires, as indicated by the dotted lines in ti". 1.
The steam-boiler is covered by a jacket, G, which concentrates the wast-e heat passing through tlues m fm' from the furnaces.
From the jacket the heat and smoke pass o" into the ordinary boiler-chimney.
The peat in its crude state is lirst dried and then sifted, and then placed in the retorts B B, and subjected to heat, as described, till thoroughly carbonized. In doing this, it is brought to a red heat.

The arrangement of pipes, as above described, is very effective for accomplishing this` result.

It is obvious that instead of steam, gas-for in-l stance, carhouicacid gas-#may be ejected from the boiler to extiugush the lires.
This carbonized productmay hc applied to a great variety of purposes, such as making marking-ink for expressmen, tbr\\'a1"dcrs,j &c., and njionldersfhcngs; also, a superior substitute tbrordimn-y lamp-black. ln this respect, it is much blacker and of bett-or quality than the ordinary productsof wood, treated in a similar manner.
Mixed with the ordinary elonwnts. it also'prmluccs a superior paint.
