Description

L. F. SCHMITT.
BED SPRING. y APPLICATION Fl-ILBD'MA. 26, 1910.
966,365. Patented Aug-2, 1910.
'UIIIIIINIIIIIUHIIII Illlfillllllllllllllllll lllllllllllllllllfllllll Ban-SPRING.
*f To all 'whom it may f v Be it known that I, LoUIs F. Soiinrfr, a citizen ofV theUnited,States, andy esidentof, the city of Paterson, county oflassaic, and
State of'NewJersey, have inventedy certain" new and useful Improvements in Bed- Springs, of which the following isa speci- `ficatlon, accompanied by drawings.
This invention relates to bed springs,
the objects of the invention are to provide a bed spring with means for holding a. mattress in position on the same so as to prevent the mattress from slipping oi or out of position on the bed spring especially when l5 the mattress is made in separate sections.
To the accomplishment of the above objects and tosuch others as may hereinafter appear the invention comprises, a bed spring' the ends of which are provided with means for preventing the mattress from slipping or sliding in an endwise direction.
The invention v'also comprises, a bedspring the sides of which are provided with means for preventing' the mattress from slipping 5' or sliding sidewise.
Referring to the drawings Figure lis a plan view of-a bed spring embodying my invention, a portion of the springsV eing represented diagrammatic'ally. Fig. 2 is a side view of Fig. l partly in section. Fig..
3 is a perspective view showing a mattress in three sections in position on a bed spring similar to that shown in Fig. 1. l
In the drawings .A designates the longitudinal members of the bed spring to the ends of which are secured in any desired manner transverse members B.l To the transverse members B are secured the springs pro er which, in the present`-instance, consist o a series of helical springs C, one end of each of said springs beingse'cured tocross pieces D, to each of'which are secured opposite ends ofa woven Wire fabric or other slmilar`- material E.
4=5 In order to prevent the mattress, which rests upon the bed spring, from slipping orsliding endWise, the transverse members B, 1n the present instance, are made of angle Iron, as shown more clearly 1n Fig. 2, the
5,0 upright portions F being made sufficiently wide to accomplish this purpose, the upright portions or end guards F beingprefcrably of vless width than the mattress as shown in .IFI-g. 3.
in order to prevent the mattress from slipping or sliding sidewise the ends of the -Speeiiication of Letters Patent.

PatentedAug,v 2, 1910,
M guards F are in the resent instance made of suiiicient length so t at the same can be bent at their ends to provide the side guards G,
`-Which in the present instance extend only a vshort dist-ance from the end of the transverse members B. The ends of the side guards G3 4on each side of the bed spring, are connecte by means of intermediate guards H, which,
vm the present instance, consist of wires or cordsfthe ends 'of which are provided with l sprus J, which make the intermediate guar' s J more or less elastic so that a person sitting on the side of the mattress will not have to sit upon a shar edge, as would be the case if the side guar s G extended the ulLIength of the bed spring. 'It is also to benoted that the wire or cords forming the intermediate guards `are crossed, inthe present instance, which makes the guarde lower at"tlie middle than elsewhere.
The 4invention as above described is veryA usefulin reventin the mattress from slippingV or siding eit er endwise or sidewise from thebed spring. and b the provision of iiexible vintermediate guarJ s for a portion of hile the invention has been described with particular reference to the details of construction it'is not to be considered as limited .thereto as man following claims.
I claim:
tion transverse angle members one side of each of said angle members being secured to the opposite ends of the said spring, the other the same, being. easilyA changes may be Vmade and'still fall within the scope of the 1. A bed spring comprising in combinaside of each of said angle members projecting above the plane yof said'spring for retaining the ends of the mattress as and for the purposes set forth.
2A bedfspring comprising in combination transversevangl'e members one side of each of said angle members Pbeing` secured to the opposite ends of the said spring, the other side of each of said angle members projecting above the plane of said spring for retaining the ends of the mattress and guards secured to each end 4of said angle members, said guards extending along a portion ofthe sides and above the plane of said spring as and for the purposes set forth.
3. Avbed spring comprising' in oombination transverse angle members one side of each of said angle members being secured to the opposite ends lof the Asaid spring, the
other side of each of said angle members projecting above the plane of said spring for retaining' the ends of the mattress, guards secured to each end of Said angle members, said guards extending along a portlon of the sides and above the plane of said spring ing witnesses.
