WILLIAM N. CAVILEER, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO JOHN ASHMAN BEAVEN, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
WINDOW-SASH RETAINER.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patgnted A110, 2, 1910. Application filed March 23, 1910. Serial No. 551,171.
aeaasa.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM N. OAVILEER, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of San Francisco, State of California, have invented a new and useful VVindow-Sash Retainer, of which the following is a specification.
My invention consists of an improved window sash retainer, of the class adapted to rigidly secure windows when partially opened, and has for its object the ventilation of apartments through partly opened windows, and incidentally to render the window sashes or frames immovable, so that access to said apartments cannot be had thereby. To accomplish this, I employ a device illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure l, is a broken view showing the bottom of the top sash, the top of the botsuch a manner as to prevent the withdrawal of the device from said lock, while it is in a vertical position, it being necessary to close bot-h windows and bring the upper portion of my device downward and outward, before it can be brought into a position from whence it is readily removable. It can thus be seen that window sashes partly opened are held firmly locked in that position, inasmuch as it is necessary to close both windows before the device can be removed, also, as it can only be removed from the inside it is inaccessible to any person or persons on the outside, thereby making their entrance into an apartment by means of a window locked with such a device, eX- tremely difficult.
Ido not wish to limit myself to the precise construction or design shown and described herein, but rather to avail myself tom sash, with the usual locking deof any modifications that may fall properly v ce and my invention adapted thereto. within the scope of my invention. Fig. 2, 1s a front vlew of my device Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and novel and cure by Letters Patent is:
A window sash retainer, of appropriate length, having enlarged ends, and apertures in said ends, one of the apertures having a lug or teat protruding into it, and the other aperture formed by making a U shaped cut in the lower end, and by pressing the inner portion of the U outward, so as to form a retaining lug on the back of the device, substantially as described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto affixed my signature in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
VVILLIAM N. CAVILEER.
detached, and Fig. 3, is a broken sectional view, similar to Fig. 1, showing the manner of engaging the usual window locking devices with my invention.
A bar or shank 1, is formed at its upper end with a head or enlargement '2, in which head is an aperture 3. A depending portion or teat 4:, at the top of the aperture 3, is adapted to engage and hold securely to any suitable locking mechanism on the top of the lower window sash. At the bottom of the shank 1, is a second enlargement 5, having an opening 6, adapted to engage securely any suitable locking mechanism on the bottom of an upper window sash.
desire to se A tongue 7, formed by bending backward Witnesses: the material cut from the opening 6, rests J. ASI-IMAN BEAVEN, on the back of the upper window lock in A. H. SEAVER.
