i SIERING--SUPIPORI FOR HAMMOCKS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
ratenteaauiy 2c, 1910.
Application filed June 1, 1910. Serial No. 564,451.
To all whom t 'may concern:
Be it known that I, ANDREW F. SANBORN, J r., a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spring-Supports for Hammocks, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in spring supports for hammocks, the object of the invention being to provide an attachment for any ordinary hammock which will elastically connect the end of the hammock with its support, and which may be readily connected and disconnected as desired.
A further object is to provide an improved attachment of this character in which the expansion of the springs is limu ited to prevent injuring the springs, and said springs inclosed in a casing to prevent them from catching' the fingers or clothing of persons about the hammock.
lith these and other objects in view, the invention consistsl in certain novel features of .construction and combinations and ar` rangements of parts, as will be more fully hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure l, is a plan view illustrating my improvements. Fig. 9., is a View in longitudinal section through the center thereof. Fig. 3, is a view in cross section thereof, and Fig. 4, is a perspective view of one of the casing halves.
l, and 2, represent metal loops having bars 3, and 4, respectively located parallel to each other and spaced apart. The loop l is adapted to be caught over a hammock support while a snap hook 5 is provided on the loop 2 for connection with the hammock. A plurality of parallel coiled springs 6 are positioned between loops l, and 2, and have hooked ends 7 caught over the bars 3, and 4, respectively. Any number of these springs may, of course, be employed. In the device illustrated, four are shown, and these springs are inclosed within a metal casing comprising two halves 8, `8, the halves are preciselj7 alike, one of which is shown in perspective in Fig. 4, and they may be cast or of heavy sheet metal.
Each member is provided centrally with a longitudinal depression 9, and these depressions come together and are preferably secured by bolts 10 and nuts 11 to permit the casing to be removed when desired. At
each side ofthe depression 9, the casing together as illustrated at 13 and form, in
effect, loo-ps at the ends of the casing conining the bars 3, and 4, and limiting the separation of the bars 3, and 4, from each other, hence limiting the expansion of the springs and preventing their utility being destroyed when an excessive Weight is in the hammock.` In other words, the eXpansion of the springs is limited to a certain number of pounds pull and in order to prevent an excessive pull from injuring the attachment, the tongues limit this expansion of the springs. In the event the spring should become ineffective, the casing may be readily removed by removing the bolts l0, and nuts l1, and a new spring placed in position.
Various slight changes might be made in the general form and arrangement of parts described without departing from my invention and hence I do not limit myself to the precise details set forth, but consider myself'at liberty to make such changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. A device of the character described, comprising two loops spaced apart, a hook on the outer end of one loop, a series of coiled springs between the loops, hooked ends on the springs caught over bars of the loops, and means limiting the separation of the loops, substantially as described.
2. A device of the character described, comprising two loops spaced apart, a hook on the outer end of one loop, a series of coiled springs between the loops, hooked ends on the springs caught over bars of the loops, a casing inclosing the springs, and comprising two halves, and tongues on said halves which when together form elongated loops around bars of the first-mentioned loops limiting the separation of the latter, substantially as described.
3. A device of the character described,
nprising two loops spaced apart, a hook of theirst-nentioned loops, suhstatiallfy as on the outer end of one loop, a series of desoribed.
coiled springs between the loops, hooked In testimony whereof I have signed my ends 0n the springs caught over bars of the name to this specification in the presence of 5 loops, a casing inlosing the sprngsdand1 two subscribing Witnesses.
