unirsi) srarns PATENT onirica.
JOSEPH W. CUL?, OIE CATLIN, ILLINOIS.
FENCE-POST.
Application filed October 18, 1909. Serial No. 523,141.
To all whom tt may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH W. CULr, a citizen of the United States, residing at Catlin, in the county of Vermilion and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fence-Posts, of which the following is a specification, reference being had t-herein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to fence posts, and the principal object of the same is to provide a novel wire holding means therefor, by means of which the fence wires may be rigidly but detachably fastened thereto.
1n carrying out the objects of the invention generally stated above it will be understood, of course, that the essential features thereof are necessarily susceptible of changes in details and .structural arrangements, one preferred and practical embodiment of which is shown in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved fence post. Fig. 2 is a central vertical sectional view thereof. Fig. 3 is a horizont-al sectional view taken on the line 33, Fig. 1. Fig. t is a fragmentary detail perspective view of the wire clamp for the post.
Referring to said drawings by numerals, 1 designates the hollow tubular post vwhich preferably tapers toward its upper end, and which has a longitudinal slot 2 formed in one side which extends from the upper end thereof to a point adjacent the embedded base thereof, the lower end of said slot being in the form of an inclined shoulder 3. Said post is also provided with regularly spaced apart openings 41 which are in alinement with the slot 2.
A substantially T-shaped wire clamp is employed in connection with the improved post, said clamp being of substantially the same length as the slot 2 of the post and consisting of a wide flat head 5 and a central laterally projecting rib 6 adapted to be fitted within the slot 2, said rib having its outer edge broken by a plurality of regu larly spaced apart notches 7 which provide seats for the fence wires 8.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 26, 1910.
The rib G extends below the lower end of the head 5 and is outwardly and downwardly curved as indicated at 9 so that the same may be hooked within the slot 2, over the shoulder 3 at the lower end thereof, as is shown in Fig. 2 of the accompanying drawing. The upper end of the rib 6, tern minates below the upper end of the head and provides an end rest 10 for the lower end of an upwardly and inwardly curved arm 11 that has its outer edge suitably fastened within the bifurcated upper end 12 of said head, said arm carrying a flat horizontal annular plate 13 which forms a cap for the upper end of the post 1.
The wire clamp is provided with bolt openings 14 for the reception of the clamping bolts 15 which project through the openings l1 and slot 2 of the post and are locked in clamping position by the lock nuts 16 which bear upon the fiat surface of the head 5 and thereby rigidly but detachably retaining the clamp in position on the post.
Itwill be seen from the foregoing that the improved post provides a simple and effective means for firmly holding the wires in engagement with the post and also provides means whereby the post may be closed so that water or the like cannot enter the same.
It will also be seen that the curved eXtension 9 of the rib 6 provides simple means whereby said extension may be hooked over shoulder 3 to facilitate rocking the' clamp ing strip to its wire holding position.
It will also be seen that when the end of the rib 9 is inserted in the slot and the clamp locked into position, the portion 9 will engage the inside of the post, while the end of the aortion 5 will engage with the outside of t e post, causing the clamp to have a tendency to spring outward. When the nuts 16 are tightened upon the bolts 15, the clamp is drawn tightly into place and serves as a nut lock to hold the nuts 1G tightly in place.
What I claim as my invention is As a new article of manufacture, a fence post comprising a body portion said body being provided with a longitudinal slot terminating in a bearing shoulder, a wire Clamp having a flat body portion, a longitudinal laterally extending rib, said rib terminating in an inwardly and downwardly extending lug, said lug adapted to have binding engagement within said post when rocked upon said bearing shoulder to cause said rib to enter said slot, and ineens for rigidly and detaehably Securing said clump to said post. 10 In testimony whereof I hereunto aix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOSEPH W. CULI). IVitnesses FRANK CARRIGAN, JOHN S. OLMSTED.
