CANOPY-CASKET.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application led May 13, 1909.
Patented July 2G, 1910. Serial No. 495,68*?.
To all 'whom t may concern:
Be it known that we, Jol-1N MELZER and HERMAN J RADEMACHER, residing in Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Canopy-Gaskets, of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which are a part of this specification.
is invention has for its object to provide a casket with its hinged cover having a canopy frame adapted to be swung upwardly therefrom to a substantially horizontal position and which normally folds within the cover to a position where it will be out of the way.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists in the canopy casket herein claimed, its parts and combinations of parts and all equivalents.
Referring to the accompanying drawings in which like characters of reference indicate the same parts in the different views; Figure l is a front elevation of a canopy casket constructed in accordance with this invention shown in its closed position; Fig. 2 is a similar view thereof with the cover open and the canopy frame closed, the lining and drapery being omitted to show the construction of the parts; Fig. 3 is a tra-nsverse sectional view of the casket in the position shown in Fig. 2; Fig. 4 is a View similar to Fig. 2 with the canopy frame in its open or elevated position; Fig. 5 is a transverse sectional view thereof with the cover and canopy frame partly opened; and, Fig. 6 is a transverse sectional view of the casket in its full open position with the lining and drapery in place.
ln these drawings l0 indicates the main or base portion of the casket and 11 is the hinged domelike cover therefor, there being a front piece 12 hinged to the front edge of the cover and of an ornamental shape to t in a correspondingly shaped cut away portion in the front of the base 10 when the cover is closed, as shown in Fig. 1.
A canopy frame is rigidly mounted on the hinged front piece 12 and preferably comprises transverse metal rods 13 connected to a pair lof parallel longitudinal wooden or other strips 14. A canopy or covering 15 is formed upon the canopy frame, as shown in Fig. 6, and the metal rods 13 are bent angularly at their middle portions and at their connecting ends so as to lie close in the inside of the cover when in the folded position, as shown in F ig. 3, and be out of the way.
A hinged catch 1G is mounted on the front piece 12 and is engaged by a spring 17 on the cover which holds it against a stop 18 on the cover and when the canopy frame is opened out to the position shown in Fig. 6 the spring 17 presses the hinged catch 16 into engagement with the stop 18 to lock the canopy frame in its extended position. ln order to unlock the canopy frame a cord 19 is attached to the hinged catch 16 and extends across the frame to the front edge thereof where it may be engaged for pulling the catch against the action of spring 17 away from the stop 18 so that the frame may be folded again. Another cord 20 close to the end of cord 19 controls a spring catch 21 which locks the frame in its closed position by engaging a plate 22 on the cover.
A lining 23 extends throughout the main portion 10 and the cover to hide the mechanical parts from view and the front edge of the canopy frame is provided with a short curtain or fringe 24 and with end curtains 25 draped therefrom for the same purpose, such drapery folding within the frame when it is closed.
It will be noted that the front piece 12 which fits in the ornamental opening in the front of the base of the casket swings to an upright position when the canopy is moved outwardly and thereby gives an ornamental outline at the upper edge of the opened cover.
vWhat we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- 1. A casket having a hinged cover, a front piece hinged to the front edge of the cover, a canopy frame carried by the front piece, and means for holding the canopy frame in an extended position over the casket.
2. A casket, having a hinged dome-like cover,.a canopy frame pivotally connected to the front edge of the cover and bent to normally lie close against the interior of the cover, means for holding the canopy frame in its vclosed position, and a lock for locking the canopy frame in an extended position.
3. A casket having a hinged cover, a front piece hinged to the front edge of the cover, a canopy frame carried by the front piece, a spring pressed catch on the front piece, a stop on the cover to be engaged by the catch for locking the canopy freine in an extended position over the casket, and means for releasing the catch.
4. A casket having a hinged cover, a front piece hinged to the front edge of the cover, a canopy frame carried by the front piece, a spring pressed catch on the front piece, :t stop on the cover to be engaged by the catch for looking the canopy frame in an extended 10 position over the casket, and zt cord conneeted to the catch and extending to the
