Description

@ma een.
EDWARD BRADY, oE PHILADELPHIA,` PENNSYLVANIA.
Letters PatentNo. 96,544, dated November 9, 1869.
IMPROVEMENT -IN FASTENING-S FOR BUTTONS.
TheSchedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all who/m 'it may concern :l
Be it known that I, EDWARD BRADY, of the city of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Button-Fastenings; and I do hereby declare the following to be. a full, clear, and exact description of the' saine, reference being had tothe accompanying drawing-which is made a part of this specication-- My invention consists in the provision of a suitable bar, attached centrally by a swivel-joint to the under side of the button proper, and operating by being passed through a slit orbutton-hole, in the article to which the button is to be attached, and turned across said slit or button-hole, to fasten the button in place, the button being'. removed, when desired, by simply turning said bar in linewith the slit or buttonhole, through which it is inserted, and withdrawing it therefrom.
To enable others skilled in the art to which my said invention appertains, to make and use the same, I will proceed to further describe its construction and operation.
Figure 1, in the drawing, is an under-side or back view of a button, having my improved fastening, as
' applied to a garment or other article, a pieceof which 'is shown.
Figure 2 is a sectional edge view of the same.
Figure 3 is a front View of the form of button shown in the other igures.
.The button A is provided with a shank, a, adapted to support, at a suitable-distance-from the button, a bar, B, attached centrally thereto, and by a loose or swivel-joint, so as to turn thereon. y
A slit or button-hole, O, of about the same length as the bar B, is provided in the gai-ment or other article to which the button is to be attached, lor in each ofthe several thicknesses to be united thereby.
The bar B is passed edgewise through the slit and' turned across it, as represented in lig. l, when the fastening is complete.
Itmay be locked in that position by flanges or lugs b thereon, engaging over the border or binding of said slit, as represented, or by other suitable means.
lhe several parts of the device may be made of any suitable material, form, and size.
I propose making the shank or connection a, or a portion of the same, of some elastic substance, so as to adapt the button to accommodate itself to di'erent thicknesses, and enable it better `to clamp together several folds or thicknesses.
The device is very simple and strong, and adapts the buttons to be Inost readily and expeditiously ap-A plied aud removed.
The swivelling of the bar adapts it to be turned, l
without moving the button, andprevents the accidental `movement of the latter, turning said bar, and thus detaching itself. Y
Having thus described my invention,
I claim as new therein, and desire to secure yby Letters Patent- The swivelled bar B, constructed with stops b, in
combination with a suitable button, A, substantially y. ,as and for the purposes set forth.
EDWARD BRADY.
