TOBACCO-LATE.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, CHARLES G. WVELLs,

citizen of the United States, residing at Rockyhill, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented certain :cation.

The present invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in what are commonly known as 'tobacco'laths, and more particularly to a novel construction whereby the twine upon which .the tobacco laths are threaded can be quickly applied to or disengaged from the lath.

The object of the invention is the provision of a tobacco lath of this character which is extremely simple and inexpensive in its construction, which admits of the twine being quickly attached thereto without the necessity of knotting the same or wrapping it around the ends of the lath, and which will thereby produce a very material saving both in the quantity of twine consumed and in the time and labor expended in attaching the twine to the lath.

lVith these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain combinations and arrangements of the parts as will more fully appear as the description proceeds, the novel features thereof being pointed out in the appended claims.

For a full understanding of the invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawing in which:

Figure 1 is a bottom plan view of a tobacco lath constructed in accordance with the invention, portions being broken away. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same, one end of the lath being shown in section. Fig. 3 is an end view of the lath with the twine detached, and Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional View through the middle portion of the lath.

Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawing by the same reference characters.

S ecifically describing the present embodlment of the invention, the numeral 1 designates a tobacco lath which may be formed of wood or other suitable material, the ends of the lath being provided with notches 2. These notches 2 may be formed in any suitable manner as by means of a saw and are shown as having a square base.

Fitted within each of these notches is a me ,tallic clip 3 adapted to engage and grip the twine 4 upon which the tobacco leaves 5 are stnung. These metallic clips 3 are V-shaped the pointed end of the clip being driven in-to the base of the notch, while the two arms of the clip have the ends thereof extended laterally in opposite directions as indicated at 6 and embedded in the end of the lath. It will also be observed that the outer portions of the flared arms of the clips are embedded in the side walls of the notches 2, and in this manner the clips are held securely within the notches after being once driven into position. If desired, the inner ends of the clips 3 may be slightly spaced from the side walls of the notches so as to admit of the clips having a spring action. The tobacco leaves 5 are threaded or otherwise strung upon the twine 4, and when the required number of leaves has been applied to the said twine, the ends thereof are inserted in the notches 2 and drawn inwardly until gripped by the V shaped clips 3. This is an operation which can be very quickly performed, and which does not'require the excessive length of twine, as is the case where the twine must be wrapped around the ends of the lath after being drawn into the notches. In order to prevent the central portion of the twine 4: from sagging, a spring bail 7 is utilized, the said bail being fitted under the twine so as to support the same and having the ends 8 thereof extended inwardly so as to engage the top of the lath, as indicated in Fig. 4, when sprung around It will thus be obvious that I have provided a Very simple and inexpensive tobacco lath which is so constructed as to admit of the twine being quickly brought into engagement therewith or disengaged therefrom, and which will thereby accomplish a great saving both in the amount of twine used and in the labor necessary for attaching the twine to the lath.

Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. In a tobacco lath, the combination of a lath having a notch in the end thereof, a

.clip fitted within the notch, and a leaf carrying twine adapted to be engaged by the clip.

2. In a tobacco lath, the combination of a lath provided with a notch, a V shaped clip fitted within the notch, and a leaf carrying twine adapted to be engaged by the said V shaped clip.

3. In a tobacco lath, the combination of a lath formed with a square notch, a V shaped clip fitted within the square notch, and a leaf carrying twine adapted to be engaged by the said V shaped clip.

4. In a tobacco lath, the combination of a lath formed with a square notch, a V shaped clip fitted within the notch and hav ing the point thereof embedded in the base of the notch, and a leaf carrying twine adapted to be engaged by the said V shaped cli 5 In a tobacco lath, the combination of a lath formed with a square notch, a V shaped clip fitted within the square notch, the point of the clip being embedded in the base of the notch while the arms thereof have their eX- tremities extended outwardly in opposite directions and embedded in the edge of the lath, and a leaf carrying twine adapted to be engaged by the clip.

6. In a tobacco lath, the combination of a lath, a leaf carrying twine, means for securing the ends of the leaf carrying twine to the lath, and a spring bail adapted to be fitted under the leaf carrying twine to prevent the s'agging thereof, the ends of the bail baing constructed to engage the lath.

7. In a tobacco lath, the combination of a lath, a leaf carrying twine, means for securing the ends of the leaf carrying twine to the lath, and a spring bail adapted to be passed under the leaf carrying twine to prevent the sagging thereof, the ends of the spring bail being extended inwardly so as to engage the top of the lath when sprung around the same.
