WHIP SOCKET AND LOCK.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, MILLARD P. BALLEN- GER, citizen of the United States, residing at Tigerville, in the county of Greenville and State of South Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Whip Sockets and Locks, of which the following is a specification.

My invention has for its object the provision of a very simple means for retaining a whip within a socket and so preventing the whip from being stolen, this means providing for locking the whip in position or freeing the whip so that it may be used under ordinary circumstances, the device being so formed as to be readily attached to the body of a wagon, adjacent to the dashboard thereof, or supported in any other desired position.

The invention comprises primarily a whip socket or holder and a guard which is adapted to surround the whip above the butt thereof, this guard having means whereby it may be locked to the holder and thus preventing the removal of the whip from the holder or socket.

For a full understanding of the invention and the merits thereof, and to acquire a knowledge of the details of construction, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which:

Figure l is a perspective view of the front end of a vehicle, showing my improved device thereon; Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the whip holder and lock; Fig. 3 is a transverse section through the same; and, Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the whip holder and the lock socket detached from the wagon.

Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.

Referring to these figures, 2 designates a cylindrical socket or holder adapted to receive the butt of a whip, this holder being formed with a longitudinally extending hollow sheath 3 at one side thereof. This is formed in its upper end with the openings 4 in its opposed walls, for the passage of a padlock shackle. The guard which is adapted to engage the whip and hold it in the socket, comprises an angular member 5 whose shank is of the same size as the sheath and adapted to slide therein or to be Specification of Letters Patent.

entirely removed therefrom. This shank is formed with a plurality of perforations 6, any one of which is adapted to register with the perforations 4 in the wall of the sheath 3. At its upper end, the shank is provided with a ring 7 which extends out at right angles to the shank and is adapted to surround a whip 8 above the enlarged butt thereof. The lower end of the socket 2 is of course closed, and hence the whip 8 can only be withdrawn from the socket by drawing the whip upward, and this is prevented by the guard 5, the guard being locked in position by the padlock 9 whose shackle 10 passes through the openings 4: and through any one of the openings. The shank is provided with a plurality of openings to permit whips of various sizes and characters being supported within the socket. In some whips, the butt is longer than in others, and hence the necessity of adjusting the guard to suit the length of the Whip butt.

Any suitable means may be used for attaching the socket to the wagon. Preferably, however, the socket is attached at the corner of the wagon, the lower end of the socket being provided with a downwardly extending ear 11 which engages with the corner post 12 of the wagon body. Any other means may, however, be provided for securing the socket either to the dashboard or to the wagon body.

In operation, a whip is passed through the ring 7 and then inserted in the socket. At the same time, the shank is inserted in the sheath 3, and then the padlock shackle is passed through the perforations in the sheath and shank, and locked. When it is desired to disengage the whip from the looking member, the padlock is removed, the whip and guard withdrawn, the whip then withdrawn from engagement with the ring, and the guard replaced, the ring, in this case, extending out to one side of the socket.

My invention may be very simply made, is adaptable to all styles and kinds of whips, and may be formed in a variety of styles.

Having thus described the invention, what I claim is 1. A whip holder including a socket adapted to receive the butt end of a Whip, a detachable annular guard surrounding the whip, a shank projecting downward from the guard parallel to the socket, a sheath formed with the socket, means for detachably locking the shank to the sheath, and means for longitudinally adjusting the annular guard with relation to the socket and sheath.

2. A whip holder comprising a socket adapted to receive the butt end of a whip, a sheath at one side of the socket, a ring adapted to surround the whip, a shank extending downward from the ring and adapted to be,

inserted into the sheath said shank and sheath being perforated, and a locking device adapted to engage the shank and sheath.

3. A whip holder comprising a socket for the butt end of a whip, a sheath extending out from the socket, said sheath being transversely perforated at its upper end, a guard comprising a ring adapted to surround the whip, and a shank extending downward into the sheath, said shank being formed rated transversely, a shank shiftable in said sheath and removable therefrom and formed to receive the butt end of a whip, a sheath formed integral with and extending along said socket, said sheath being perforated transversely, a shank shiftable in said sheath and removable therefrom and formed with a plurality of perforations, a ring extending at right angles from the upper end of the shank and adapted to surround the whip above the butt thereof, and a padlock, the shackle of which passes through the perforations in the sheath and detachably engages the shackle of the sheath, the socket being provided on its lower end with a downwardly extending ear for attachment to the corner post of a wagon body.
