Description

N. J. GRANDCHAMP & L. S. BARNARD.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
NAPOLEON J. GRANDCHAMIP AND LEWIS S. BARNARD, OF OLYMPIA, WASHINGTON.
WIRE-CABLE CUTTER.
To all whom it may concern: 7
Be it known that we, NAPOLEON J. GRAND- CHAMP and Lnwrs S. BARNARD, citizens of the United States, residing at Olympia, in the county of Thurston, State of Washington, have invented a new and useful Vire- Cable Cutter, of which the following is a specification.
The objects of the invention are, generally, the provision in a merchantable form of a device of the class described which shall be inexpensive to manufacture, facile in operation and devoid of complicated parts; specifically, the provision of toggle levers of novel and improved construction, adapted to operate the device, and of a cam lever and a guard strip, whereby the said toggle levers may be actuated; other and further obj ects being made manifest hereinafter as the description of the invention progresses.
The invention consists in the novel construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described, delineated in the accompanying drawings, and particularly pointed out in that portion of this instrument wherein patentable novelty is claimed for certain distinctive and peculiar features of the device, it being understood that within the scope of what hereinafter is thus claimed, divers changes in the form, proportions, size and minor details of the structure may be made without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
Similar numerals of reference are employed to denote corresponding parts throughout the several figures of the drawings.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 shows our invention in perspective, and Fig. 2 is a perspective detail, showing a slight modification in the jaws of the device.
In carrying out the invention a base member 1 is provided, having at its ends, support-engaging feet denoted by the numeral 2. The base member 1, at one end, is provided with an upstanding shoulder 3, upon which is arranged to reciprocate a movable jaw 1. This movable jaw 4 is adapted to reciprocate in a guide 5 which is rigidly assembled with the shoulder 3 of the base member. One edge of the upper face of the shoulder 3 is provided with an upstanding tongue 6 which is adapted to register in a groove 7 in one edge of the movable 4. The base member 1 is terminally provided Specification of Letters Patent.

with a fixed jaw 10 moved laterally out of alinement with the movable jaw 4E, and these jaws 4 and 10 may be provided with shearing plates 8. It is obvious that, as shown in F ig. 2, the fixed jaw 10 may be disposed in alinement with the movable jaw 4:, the said jaws being provided, in such instance, with punching elements 9, or the like, the device, in its application, being by no means limited to the cutting function which is imposed upon the plates 8.
Toggle levers are provided, and in their preferred form are composed of a pair of parallel, spaced links 11, the said links at one end being pivotally connected with the movable jaw 4:. A similar pair of spaced, parallel links 12 are provided one end of the said links being pivotally assembled with a shoulder 11 rising from the base member 1. The adjacent ends of the several links 11 and 12 are arranged to overlap, and through the overlapped portions is passed a transverse pintle 15, upon which is ournaled for rotation, between the ends of the links, a roller 16. The pintle 15 is terminally inclosed by standards spaced apart and rising from the base member 1. Between these spaced standards, which are denoted by the numeral 17, the pintle is adapted to reciprocate, being thereby held against accidental displacement.
An operating lever 18 is provided, having at its lower extremity, a cam head 19. A pivot bolt 20 is passed transversely through the upper extremities of the standards 17 and through the cam head 19 of the operating lever, whereby the said operating lever is fulcrumed between the said standards17.
The cam head 19 is adapted to engage the roller 16, to move the toggle levers into alinement with each other, whereby the movable jaw 4 may be advanced toward the fixed jaw 10. A guide strip 21 is provided, one end of which is rigidly assembled with the extremity of the cam head 19, the other extremity thereof being assembled with the body proper of the operating lever 18. This guide strip 21 is curved to conform to the contour of the cam head 19 and is disposed between the members of each pair of links 11 and 12, which go to make up the toggle levers, the rollers 16 being disposed between the said guide strip 21, and the cam head 19 of the operating lever. As hereinbefore pointed out, when the upper, or free end of the operating lever 18 is moved in one direction, the cam head 19, engaging the roller 16, will actuate the movable jaw 4, toward the fixed jaw 10. When, however, the free end of the operating lever 18 is swung in an opposite direction, the guide strip 21, engaging the'roller 16, will raise the adjacent,
through the medium of the roller 16, thus retractingthe movable jaw from the fixed jaw 10.
The device, although simple in construction and-comprising but few parts, embodies a construction in which a movable jaw may be actuated with great power toward a fixed jaw, and it will be seen, that through the medium of the guide strip 21, the movable jaw may be readily retracted from the fixed jaw, after the device has exercised its shearing function.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is:
A device of the class described comprising a base provided with a fixed aw; a movable jaw slidably mounted upon the base and arranged to cooperate with the fixed jaw; a pair of standards rising from the base; a
pivotally connected ends of the toggle levers,
lever having a cam head pivotally supported by the standards; a guide strip spaced in its intermediate portion from the head and terminally secured thereto; a pair of spaced links pivotally connected at one end to the base and arranged to include between them, the intermediate portion of the guide strip upon one side of the standards; a second pair of spaced links pivotally connected at one end with the movable aw and arranged to include between them, the intermediate portion of the guide strip upon the other side of the standards, a connection uniting the adjacent ends of the links; and a roller mounted upon the connection, the roller being engageable by the guide strip to retract the movable jaw, and being engageable by the cam head to advance the movable jaw.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing as our own, we have hereto aflixed our signatures in the presence of two witnesses.
