UNDERGARMENT.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, CHARLES S. Bosses, a citizen of the United States, residing at lVashington, District of Columbia, have in vented certain new and useful Improvements in Undergarments, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to under-garments in which provision is made for the bending of the limb joint by creating a fullness or puckering of the garment in proximity to the joint portion, and is designed as an improvement over the device disclosed in an application for Letters Patent of the United States, filed by me July 21, 1.909, #508,713, for undergarments.

My present invention is designed to provide a construction which, while producing a minimum amount of fullness or puckering upon the under or inside of the joint, where puckering naturally occurs, on the bending of the limb, will produce ample fullness or puckering on the outside of the joint, as, for example, over the knee in nether garments.

I have further aimed to provide a construction which may be readily applied to or embodied in an under garment after it is complete, so that change in the construc tion of the garment itself, whether manufactured by knitting or otherwise, is not required to incorporate my invention therewith.

I have also aimed to provide means for creating a fullness over hips in nether garments, thereby giving increased comfort and insuring retention in proper position with out necessitating uncomfortable tightness at the waist line.

My invention comprises the novel features hereinafter described and particularly set forth in the appended claim.

My invention is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a pair of underdrawers with my invention applied thereto; Fig. 2 is an enlarged view of the knee portion showing the parts in the gathered position; Fig. 3 is a front view showing one leg only as drawn upon by the tapes; and Figs. 4 and 5 are sectional details.

In these drawings I have shown my invention as applied to an ordinary pair of drawers Lintended to represent any construction having leg parts of any desired fabric or make. In order to produce a full- Specification of Letters Patent.

1 ness or puckering over the knee which will accommodate the knee when the leg is bent without clinging or binding thereto, and without undue fullness or puckering behind the knee, I provide means for drawing toward each other portions of the garment above and below the knee on bot-h sides of the leg, the line of drawing action or strain which causes the puckering being inclined to the general direction of the leg and also curved. As a convenient means of effecting this action, I have shown a tape 2 attached to the garment below the knee, and just in rear of the center of the leg or line of the seam 3, when the garment is a seamed garment. From this point the tape or drawstring is carried upward and forward on a curved line until it crosses the center or seam line, as shown, suitable guiding means being provided to hold the drawer tape or string in this curved position while permitting the drawing action. As a suitable guiding means I may provide a casing or sleeve 4-, formed by a similar tape, and having its edges stitched to the garment. The drawstring or tape 2 extends above and is free from its guide or casing, and when drawn upon at the top not only tends to pucker the garment, but to straighten between its lower attached end and the top of the guide, thus carrying the portion of the garment at the knee forward, and this action taking place on both sides of the knee produces a fullness over the knee so that when the knee is bent there is no binding of the fabric upon any part of the leg at or in proximity to the knee. In order to secure the draw-string or tape when drawn upon, I may provide any suitable fastening means, but I prefer to provide one of the cam-buckle type, as indicated at 5.

In nether garments, as hereinbefore in dicated, it is desirable to provide means for creating a fullness over the hips. For this purpose I provide a drawstring or tape 6, on each side, secured at its rear end just back of the center of the side of the drawers and carried through a suitable guide, as casing 7, comprising a tape stitched at its edges, the free end of the drawer tape being adapted to be attached to a tape, having one end secured to the drawers in front of the center of the side of the drawers. These side drawstrings not only cause the waist band to fit properly, but produce a fullness over the hips only, tending to hold the drawers in position Without the vvais t band being unduly tight.

While I have shown in the drawings and described in the specification a special Way of producing fullness over the knee which I regard as the most desirable manner of accomplishing this purpose, I Wish it to be understood that I do not limit myself to this precise form of the tape and connecting device.

Having thus described my invention, What I claim is In a nether garment, means for forming an enlargement in the leg of the garment over the knee portion, said means consisting of a tape inclosed in a guide casing, the loWer end of the casing and tape being attached t0 the leg of the garment below the knee and behind the line of the side seam, in combination With a connecting device attached to the leg of the garment above the knee and in front of said line, substantially as described.
